Beijing '08: Live Coverage ???
UPDATED: Turns out, I'm a idiot... who knew? Universal Sports will be all in for the Worlds, but is not doing the Olympics. The partnership with NBC is in progress, but their coverage of Olympic events is limited to rebroadcasts later. Good news: we know where to go for live video of the Worlds next month, including live cable broadcasts in some places. But for the Olympics, it's back to CG's post, right sidebar... and other assorted sleuthing of the NBC website.
Update II: From NBC's website:
The 3,600 total hours of coverage on seven NBC Universal networks: NBC, USA, MSNBC, CNBC, Oxygen, Telemundo and Universal HD, as well as NBCOlympics.com, is 1,000 hours more than the combined coverage for every televised Summer Olympics in U.S. history (Rome 1960 - Athens 2004, 2,562 hours). NBCOlympics.com will feature approximately 2,200 total hours of live streaming Olympic broadband video coverage, the first live online Olympic coverage in the United States.
Cycling is one of the 25 sports that will be "streamed live via broadband at NBCOlympics.com," so I think that answers the essential question. Well, one of them. Here's another: who are we going to have to listen to explain the basics of road cycling throughout the race? And will the camera follow Paolo Bettini the whole time, even when he's being dropped by the Spanish squad?
UPDATE III: Don't forget to install Microsoft Silverlight if you want to watch NBCOlympics.com's coverage. Silverlight is a device that, when installed, enhances video streams as well as Microsoft's detailed files on your web-surfing tendencies. H/t UMWolverine, who has been patiently mentioning this little detail for a couple days now, I think.

D'oh! It was pretty brilliant I thought.

calling a sprint WCSN-style
Here’s how they call a sprint on WCSN:
“HERE COME THE RIDERS! HERE COME THE RIDERS! HERE COME THE RIDERS!!”
Can’t be much worse than that, can it?
Ok, I just jinxed it…

Here's hoping for a big dose of Paul
and a side of Craig.

Now I just need a way to store the streaming content so that I can watch it at a respectable time. :)

beat down, eh?
Looks good—Safari AND Firefox support on Mac. Install away, Gav!
Everybody would probably do well to install the v. 2 Beta 2, as it’s described as being especially Olympian just for this content. (But… oops! Looks like you need a newer Intel Mac for v. 2.)

crap
my os is not current enough.
i’ve been meaning to fix that. perhaps now would be a good time, though really, there’s never a good time for that sort of thing.
10.4.8
i think it said. i’m still on 10.3. i know, i lag.
i hate messing with my ‘puter. turn it on, toast my bread, turn it off.
eh...
The year your OS was new, Cippo won two stages of the Giro and Cav was racing in the juniors. Time for you to ask Steve Jobs for a new i-something. :)
-Greg
lol, yeah
three years is a long time in computer age. but it still works fab.
and steve jobs will only give me a new thingy if i give him all my lunch money. demanding, that dude.

I know where you can get a free iPod…

Seriously... you people have the most unkind IT guys...
... you need to convince your bosses to hire me as the IT consultant at $250/hr. That, coincidentally, will allow me to provide the Podium Cafe with on location commentary and race reports for all VDS included races :D
I know, it said "als" instead of "ist"... don't give me any crap...
Ahem
Government. It is what it is.

Wait just a damn minute...
... you mean, the time zones actually work to the Pacific Time Zone’s advantage for once???? SUCK IT EAST COAST!!!!!
Deutsche Wurst. Alles andere als Käse.
+1
8pm on Friday! Order some pizzas, settle in on the couch, and settle in for a nice evening of cycling. We’re so stoked!!
-Greg
So what did YOU do on Friday night?
Well, I sat by myself in my living room watching a bike race on the internet while chatting with a bunch of people on a blog… after that I burned my man-card, fed my 35 cats, resigned myself to a life of loneliness and embraced the horrific unending existence of being a shut-in.
Then on Saturday I went for a bike ride.
Deutsche Wurst. Alles andere als Käse.
So
it all worked out then?

Looks like it...
... PodiumCafe is the only person on my dance card of late.
I know, it said "als" instead of "ist"... don't give me any crap...
I was speaking in the pluperfect third person tense...
... which means that I had has the bike had for riding been gone from.
I know, it said "als" instead of "ist"... don't give me any crap...
Why yes he does... have you not seen that motorized beauty?
"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."
oh my goodness Dan...
...that was hilarious….”so what did you do on a Friday night?”...absolutely classic!
Oh great
Don’t rope the Cafe into one of those east/west firefights. I don’t want to have to hire bodyguards when I go to Boston.

nah, it's all good :)
A little balance is nice.
Having just come off of three weeks of not being able to watch the Tour live, since there’s no way I can deal with getting up at like FRICKIN’ 4AM with a day job, it’s awesome to have it mixed up a bit. We’ve had more than our share of suckin’ it due to the décalage horaire, let us vent a little, good naturedly. :)
-Greg
lol
i’ll take it over starting in the morning for sure.
i just had to find something to complain about. i mean, couldn’t it end at a nice convenient time like 9.00 or 10.00? then, you know, there could be a post-party before last call…
I'm so happy I live in the middle of ya'll :-)
A litlte late night viewing suits my non-sleeping life rather well! Can’t wait!
"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."

i feel renewed...
like Phil when he correctly identifies a rider before Paul does… finally, we don’t have to throw our biorhythms all to hell just so we’re not the last ones to know!
Levi
My money is on NBC just following Levi around the whole race while the Spanish squad rides away
i certainly hope not

Screen capture

I was able to grab a capture of the online listing for the Road race. 8pm Pacific Time Aug 8th.
NY Times
article about NBC’s online coverage.
The viewing experience on NBCOlympics.com will differ from the TV standard. The games will not be slickly produced or described by pairs of announcers; instead, users will see the standard world feed that is sent to all broadcasters, and bloggers will serve as play-by-play voices and analysts. Users will also have access to statistics, athlete biographies and other information as they watch the action.
What a wasted opportunity for NBC
They should have flown over a team of us crack bloggers.
BUT I guess they wanted to keep their FTC licence.
Silly.
Hm
I wonder if they’ll have commenting. We may have to flash-mob it.

oooh, that would be fun
they are powerless to resist us…
and really, they should have hired us. we’re like pro and stuff.
Crack Bloggers?
They really do have blogs about any topic don’t they…
I know, it said "als" instead of "ist"... don't give me any crap...
what? no audio?
that sucks…

Same story:
"We think the experience will be powerful without the commentators," Zenkel said.
Yeah, and a lot less expense for NBC.
well...
i have to admit, i probably would have muted the commentary anyway.
so no real loss here. just need a startlist, since they’ll all be in national kit, which messes with the gav rider id system.
unfortunately.....
with my deteriorating vision, i need the audio more than the video
"Wizard's first rule. People are stupid. They will believe anything they want to be true or fear to be true." -- Terry Goodkind
We will do rider IDs!!!
Seriously, there’s no value that can be added to video that you can’t find here.

I like Chris' flash mob idea...
... if they offer a commentary thread or BBS or some such device during the cycling coverage… Podium Cafe should make it’s presence KNOWN.
I know, it said "als" instead of "ist"... don't give me any crap...
I think I could help out a little with that sort of thing.
Not like I haven’t done it before… ha ha ha ha!!!
"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."
you're assuming i'll be able to actual read at that point in time

MNF
Years ago ABC, after tiring of the complaints about Howard Cosell, braodcast Monday Night Football without the commentators.
It sucked. Having proved their point the experiment was never repeated.
Depending on what the audio feed is, it could be worse than no audio.
Better still...
... I propose that we get John Madden to do commentary with Bob Roll for the Olympic Road Race.
I know, it said "als" instead of "ist"... don't give me any crap...
All we'd hear is Brett Favre... ha ha ha!!!
"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."

... on their main page below the Vuelta a Burgos coverage it has an entry for the Oly’s.

let's see if they post anything before the games start...
which, tho the opening ceremonies are on friday, 8 aug, soccer kicks off tomorrow at 5.30am edt us online streaming

You want a Beach Volleyball preview?
I got your preview right here.
(I’m not sure whether to be appalled or in awe of the photographer that pulled this assignment off).
dunno
but that just reemphasized why I’d never be able to pull of a career in photography. I got embarrassed just taking this picture, and she was totally mugging for the camera.
Great googily-moogily!
Put me down for the “awe of the photographer” thing. (All my revisits to the Hottitude threads have been vindicated!
you know, after a couple of things from google searches...
there’s a high probability of not being able to watch the road race live from nbcolympics:
“No events that are scheduled to be televised will be available online until after they are seen on TV, said Perkins Miller, senior vice president for digital media at NBC Sports,” according to AP.

The folks that own the rights have all the lawyers and money in the world to play whack-a-mole for the next few weeks. I suspect that a major outlet like RAI will be pressured into geo-restricting access pretty quickly.
sadly true
geo-restricting is the most fucked up bit of technology ever. just sayin’
maybe we’ll get lucky and the lawyers at nbc will assume that no true blue ‘merican would ever want to watch some italian coverage, and we can still sneak our way in. here’s hoping, because like, as if i want american commentary? or, more to the point, no commentary at all? my id-ing skillz aren’t that great when everyone’s in national kitty.
38 cats?!
where?!
i’m so not the crazy cat lady. i have 2, but one is so stupid and lazy that i’m not sure he counts.
I thought that was the entry criteria for the Friday night party
that’s what Dan said. You mean I didn’t need to cover my floor with kitty litter?
Caution all...
I think Lyne might’ve hit the wine a wee bit much tonight… :-)
