Beijing Parcours Recon

Olympic_logo_mediumThis much we know: the Beijing Olympic road course will be very, very selective. And very scenic.

The main thing you need to know about is that it bounces up and down over the last 150km quite a bit. After an 80km relatively flat warmup, the course heads up and over Juyong Pass and through the finish area... then does it six more times. OK, Juyong Pass features an approximately 350 meter gain over 11km, averaging some 3%. But the constant climbing and descending promises to shell everyone who isn't especially proficient at either.

Much has been said about the prolferation of climbing, but often the details matter quite a bit. There isn't much information out there about the precise grades, and my 3% estimation is the result of math on my part (be afraid). Update! see additional details in comments... Another question I'll throw out there is, are there any nasty ramps? There appears to be a dip at the top of the climb, followed by a quick hump up and through the Great Wall. I've been to the Great Wall, and can tell you that the hills around it are often ridiculously steep; even the wall itself can be a hump, on foot. But I can't say for sure what the road to Badaling looks like. For what (little -- shock value?) it's worth, here's the profile:

Olympicprofile_medium

Another point: descending. For every 11km going up, there's another 11km going down. Descents are highly variable; everyone can go down a straight road. But if it's more technical, this could give a handful of riders a leg up. Finally, the finish is after the descent, followed by 1km heading back up the pass. If the descent is selective, look for Sammy Sanchez to try to get away and solo home. Boy would that make my evening...

Kristin Armstrong did some recon of the race last year and had some interesting observations about the course. Oh, and one last thing: the start should be really cool. Beijing is a great tourist city, and the course takes in a couple truly unique places. It begins at the north gate of the Temple of Heaven, the iconic Ming Dynasty temple with its distinctive round Prayer Hall for Good Harvests... rebuilt in the 19th C. with equally iconic old-growth Douglas fir trees from Oregon. The race then heads past Tiananmen Square, on the north end, where it will pass under the visage of Mao Zadong from the Tiananmen Gate, separating the mortal masses from the Forbidden City. From there it's north and east, out of town (if that's still possible) in the direction of the airport and the Wall.

Oh, one last thing: love the sport logos! [e.g., the bike symbol above.] This is a play on some sort of curvy, ancient Chinese script, I believe from the Qin (don't call us Qing!) Dynasty from 200 B.C. My Wikipedia research refers to it as Seal Script... but it's been a while since I had any first-hand contact. Anyway, it's a really visually cool representation of Chinese characters still in existence, albeit hardened off to their more angular modern form. If you ever do the tourist thing over there you'll see it at plenty of ancient sites. Modern China is a conundrum wrapped in a riddle and ladled over with thick, gooey frustration sauce... but for history buffs (guilty) it's a veritable gold mine.

Parcours

I’ve hunted - on and off - for months for the details of the course. At first it looked like it was an out and back loop on either side of the expressway to the Badaling section of the Great Wall. On closer inspection, however, it appears the course will use the “old road to Badaling,” which has several switchbacks as it traverses through the valley, and then descend on the expressway.

Check out the Google Maps overlay here: http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=2cbd2116c5a668bcc2e1b301e5eed495

Also, if I’m looking at the map correctly, there appears to be a tunnel that I measure at 1km in length near the top of the descent.

by humboldt on Aug 5, 2008 6:53 PM EDT reply actions

That tunnel...

... looks like it’s at the very end of the ascent, not the beginning of the descent… the course twists on itself two or three times and it’s a little hard to tell which side is which if you don’t zoom waaaay in with Google Earth.

The descent seems to feature the following assortment of curves…

Chicane (90º to 90º) = 3 (distance between curves on first one = 100m, second one = 53m, third one = 60m)
Chicane (90º to hairpin) = 1 (distance between curves = 60m)
S-curve (90º to 90º to 90º) = 1 (distance between 1 and 2 = 100m… distance between 2 and 3 = 0m)
Switchbacks = 2 (distance between switchbacks = 200m)

Could be pretty technical if those curves have lots of shrubs or trees and make it a blind line through the apex. The sort of thing where those who can improve lap on lap might stand a shot at gaining distance. I have no idea where the finish line is though.

I know, it said "als" instead of "ist"... don't give me any crap...

by crashdan on Aug 5, 2008 7:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Curves

I think those curves are on the old road up the hill, and the descent is on the straight expressway. They exit the expressway at the bottom of the descent and then make a clockwise loop back onto the old road and across the finish line.

by humboldt on Aug 5, 2008 7:26 PM EDT up reply actions

in which case ...

the tunnel is at the top of the descent not ascent. The old road crosses the new road a few times so it’s easy to get mixed up, but they’re definitely going UP the one with switchbacks and down the expressway.

by humboldt on Aug 5, 2008 7:28 PM EDT up reply actions

The reason I assumed it was the other way around...

... is due to the direction that the riders would have to go coming in from the “warm up course”... it looked to me like they would just continue coming on towards the hills by going straight instead of hitting the “Finish” house area, make a sharp left and sharp right to head up the older part (curvy road is the one on the left, straightish road the one on the right… parade run in approaches from the bottom…)

coming in from the other direction puts a nasty little hinky chicane right, and I mean like 15m in front of, what I’m guessing is the finish line

...but I’m just pulling all of that out of my Ricco. I’ve never been there and I haven’t read any course descriptions beyond what Chris wrote up there… and the “official” map of the course looks like it was hand drawn by my 3 year old niece.

I know, it said "als" instead of "ist"... don't give me any crap...

Say what?!!???

Do I understand this correctly? Ascending riders might conceivably have to dodge descending riders on this course?

I have a couple of profiles

the first one is more reliable, it fits the description of the profile pretty well

but then I also found a profile posted in a Spanish Internet forum. It’s not anywhere close to what has been described so I’m not sure if it’s correct because there are some slopes that are very steep.

link

what I can assure is that the last 700 meters are at an average slope of 7%, Valverde’s best type of finish!

I'm just guessing

but I’m thinking anything involving the aforementioned party, raft poles, and frustration sauce will almost certainly involve an NDA, as well. So everyone will just have to imagine how it turns out.

Back in 2006, when I began commenting that Cycle Sport’s white wristband campaign saying “I support drug-free sport” had a certain, hollow “just say no” sound to it, this was the result. Courtesy of Bethie’s special brand of genius and KevinK’s follow-through:

Interesting course

It’s a 5% average grade, according to what I’ve read, and a long climb. I don’t know if this is the type of course for the Bettini-types, but instead for the Contador/Valverde-types. Spain certainly has an advantage over Italy on this kind of race over Italy.

by BDBrian on Aug 6, 2008 4:02 PM EDT reply actions

Bettini

hasn’t identified many Bettini-type climbs lately either. But you’re right, the length of it really swings the advantage toward someone else. Obviously Valverde can get over it.

looking over the list

methinks this is a course for puncher/survivors more than the protected thoroughbreds.

my list of outsiders includes (in no order):
Botero, Leipheimer, Jens!, Dessel, Schum, Wegmann, Gesink, van Augustyn.

And just because his name reminds me of my most favorite monty python sketch ever, I hope pidgorny does well . . .

Training in Beijing traffic.....

http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,24138662-11088,00.html

“Tour de France champion Carlos Sastre, triple world road race champion Oscar Freire, Samuel Sanchez and Alejandro Valverde tackled the mountainous sections of the road-race course as trucks, buses and cars careered past.”

by steph- on Aug 6, 2008 11:16 PM EDT reply actions

Some of the pics I saw referred to an “official practice” for the road race. I wonder if you’re only supposed to be on the course at certain times, or if they block traffic for the official practice and you’re on your own if you go at other times?
