Being Spanish

seems to be a pre-requisite to winning this year

Sammy Nice...

... Rebellin Good… Tony… Out of NOWHERE … pulled up on sheer guts from 30+ seconds back in the last 2k

I know, it said "als" instead of "ist"... don't give me any crap...

but i’m a newbie who just TDFs and drools at the sport!

There are a LOT of reasons ...

... why 17 for CVV and 11 for LL are fantastic placings… even if they’d been in that final group… CVV could have won if he’d been there and managed to surprise attack with 200m left or so, but sprint up hill to the finish? That’s what Rebellin gets paid to do.

I know, it said "als" instead of "ist"... don't give me any crap...

I was hoping the team would do well.

I’m happy for C and I’m happy he gets to come home for a break. He’s been focused all year and deserves some downtime even if it’s just a couple weeks.

by crashdan on Aug 9, 2008 5:39 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Absolutely!!

Hope he’s not disappointed with bronze – he was WAY back off the break group and came from nowhere to catch them and the go straight past them.

Maybe he’ll regret not keeping going and just TTing the last 6km, once he stayed in with the other 5 the likes of Rebellin and Sanchez were always the favourites

But I’m SOOOO happy for him, especially as no-one gave him a hope ahead of the race – people should listen to the man when he said he had a chance :)

As I said somewhere else, on the plus side he looks in awesome form and totally recovered from his monster TdF performance, but lets hope he’s okay for Wednesday (he thinks 3 days will be plenty of time to recover so bring on the TT)

Hm...

So according to NBC’s website (at http://www.nbcolympics.com/tv_and_online_listings/zone=ET/day=1/network=1/tv.html), they’re supposed to be showing the race right now. Instead, we get volleyball, which wasn’t supposed to come on until 10:30 ET. Any ideas what’s going on? Did I miss a memo?

Valverde and Bettini have both said they were feeling good

but they were just too obsessed with each other in the climb

by King of Doping on Aug 9, 2008 11:23 AM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Goal for Spain was always gold....

If Valverde was unable then it was up to Sastre (who did most of the work) and Sanchez (who was the freshest). Outstanding tactics by Spain!....and well deserved win by lucky #8….brilliant sprint for Sanchez.

from CN:
Going into the race as outstanding favourite; Alejandro Valverde finished back in 13th place in the group with Bettini. Nevertheless, the Green Bullet was proud of his team-mate’s performance and the part he played in it. “The Spanish team was the strongest one and we showed it!” he said proudly. “Samuel Sanchez’s victory is on of great satisfaction for the entire team. He was able to dominate a difficult situation at the end.

“Personally I felt good and had no problem with the hot weather,” continued the Spanish champion, “but considering the fact that I was – together with Paolo Bettini – one of the biggest favourites everybody looked at us and there was little we could do. Samuel was able to take advantage of the situation and to give Spain its first medal in these Olympic games.”

It is well worth the time to see Sanchez podium ceremony on NBC online. Tears were streaming down his face….it was very sweet and hard not to get caught up in the moment with him!!

No wonder there was nobody on the course

From cyclingnews:

The Olympic road race course, like most cycling events, was to be free access for most of the route allowing fans to catch a glimpse of their countrymen or favourites without having to purchase a ticket. Yet when cycling enthusiasts and even family members of riders tried to get into the venue, they were turned back by Chinese security.

Smooth move NBC

I thought I would be patient and watch the race unfold on NBC to find out who won. Problem was, I noticed that as Lampley said, “coming up later, the conclusion of the cycling road race,” they showed Sanchez receiving the medal in a small collage screen behind him. Way to kill whatever suspense may have been there NBC.

Are you kidding me...

Someone remarked that the finish was too steep and that’s why Cancellara ended up with Bronze… are you kidding me?, he shouldn’t have even been there. It’s a testament of the power of this freak of nature known as Spartacus that he was even there to contest the finish.

just finished watching ;-)

was out of town until this afternoon, camping with no internet or TV until last night way late … so my coverage was a few clips on CBC last night before going to bed (pretty useless out of context, I think Clara Hughes (2004 women’s RR bronze) is too far removed from cycling as neither she nor Mark Connolly could ID any rider other than Hesjedal it seemed – loved the line by Connolly “I’ve waited three Olympics to be able to say that a Canadian is leading the men’s Olympic cycling road race” – the sad part is that most probably got their hopes up and didn’t realize about sharing the work in a breakaway or that the breakaway usually gets caught) ... then there was the ticker on the CBC Newsworld this morning so I knew Barry was 9th and heard that “the Spaniard Sanchez” won (and I’m thinking, which Sanchez, I’m not sure who’s riding?) ... then we saw more middle of the race coverage on Radio-Canada this morning (French CBC) where they actually have cycling-knowledgable commentators who could name the riders ;-).

And tonight, I watched the all the live bits that CBC had on last night in between their main story of Kyle Shewfelt’s amazing comeback from injury (2004 gold medallist in floor exercise, broke both legs last fall) ... couldn’t believe how often Hughes mentioned that the Canadians were well-positioned and eating and drinking lots, surely there was something else she could think of to say – perhaps she’s forgotten all her cycling strategy now that she’s a speed skater. They showed a bit at 10 km, then went back to men’s gymnastics qualifying and did a split screen showing a Canadian’s bar routine on the left and the last 250 m of the RR on the right- lol.

So, I did then watch the NBC coverage from earlier today that I’d taped – Paul and Craig were better than the Canadian commentators I thought, but even that was dumbed down even more than on Versus for the TdF (ie. explaining “peloton”). But at least I got to see the actual finish, even the lead-up to the finish.

Haven’t read much afterwards yet about the race (ie rider comments, analysis) ... sounded from Evans’s website that his role was to help set up Rogers which he seemed to have done well, Rogers just didn’t seem to have much left at the end. And yay for Mike Barry!!! I’m sure a top 10 finish helps in the quest for further cycling funding in Canada (which reminds me, the ads on the Canadian coverage made it really obvious where all the sports sponsorship is going in this country these days – winter sports/Vancouver 2010 – any Olympic sponsor ads showing actual athletes showed winter sports athletes! the 2 I saw were a figure skater and a XC skier).

by guidemd on Aug 10, 2008 2:04 AM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

oh yeah

almost forgot, thanks for the pages and pages and pages of commentary to scan through as I watched tonight ;-).

by guidemd on Aug 10, 2008 2:05 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

yes, but I love this comment from a CBC/Cdn Press article
It appeared Hesjedal was in position to earn Canada’s first medal of the Games after spending most of the race in the lead pack. Hesjedal even grabbed the overall lead briefly but couldn’t keep up the pace.

...obviously written by someone who knows little to nothing about cycling- lol. Then again, the CBC anchor while the race was on (Ian Hanomansing) kept introducing the cycling segments as if Ryder was going to win …

by guidemd on Aug 10, 2008 2:35 AM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

agreed

the Canadian cycling commentary was quite pathetic.

i wish i had recorded the nbc coverage...

in spite of the fact that it would have meant having to listen to Sherwen with all his obvious biases (i managed to catch a bit of the coverage but then it gave way to women’s weightlifting). but at least he knows the riders and the sport and doesn’t make obvious mistakes like Clara and company.

we might be the lone Cadel fans here, not sure, but i was super-pleased with what he did and from what i’ve read, he and his team were too. and yes, he does both attack and lead as he showed in the final lap or two, and it was nice to see him working for Mick and pushing through to the last with some of the other major contenders. he has confirmed for the TT as a result of his performance in the RR.

This video is an attempt to show the ambience at the final hour of the Nice Ironman competition. A lame attempt i'll admit, but wth? If you're ever going to finish towards the end of an ironman, i suggest Nice as the place to do it. The applause and support and general ambience at the end is really remarkable. Dj's, pom-pom girls, people dancing, shouting, dance music blasting ... Some finishers just go on through, others raise their arms or just have a huge smile, one guy did some pushups while the dj counted for him, another did a cartwheel, some ran through with their little kids holding their hands. And this all 8 hours after the winners have finished.

When i went out my door to walk over to see the last hour or so of the Ironman, the first thing i saw was a guy across the street, pushing his triathlon bike, head hanging down to his chest, walking with a pronounced. Painful. Slow. Trudge. Medal around his neck. He'd done well. Hope he felt better the next day.

Then i got to the promenade and started seeing more of the people who'd finished: one guy asleep on the pavement with his wife by his side in all the raucous noise and confusion and crowds everywhere. Then the medical tent - massages, those heat blanket thingies, oxygen, people limping aorund, Oy!

Then every now and then you see a finisher with a medal around their neck who look fresh as a daisy, like they've just had a nice walk in the park.

Then finally you get to the finish line ... and that's the video. At the end there's a fireworks display (no one timed their finish to coincide with it this year) and then apparently a few hundred people stayed all night to party on the prom next to the beach until daybreak.

I could not do an ironman even if i wanted to, but i'll be there again next year to help welcome the last finishers in.
