Tour of Mo - Stage 5 Live
Hey - where is everyone? Cyclingnews says it's 200m to the sprint but the sadly silent coverage at ToM's website has even deserted us. (And Universal isn't up until 4:30pm.)
drat - 75 word min. Do dashes count as words? - - - - - hmm. Oh look, the pic is back. Wait, it's gone again. No it's back... Really it is this time. Where's the sound? Only 2 minutes to go and how many words? Is this enough? Or this?
SOUND - we have commentary!

Wow - they're expecting impact from hurricane weather for the weekend...?
I was just sitting here feeling bad that I wasn’t going to Mo tomorrow for the last 2 stages… not so sad now! (Poor riders and fans!)
Those of us here are NOT looking forward to it but the rain that was supposed to hit
today did hold off until tonight. Doubtful we’ll be that lucky tomorrow. And Sunday… well that looks to be one very wet day.
"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."
I see you have started without me. Where is video/audio?
UniversalSport doesn’t start for another hour – so it says on their schedule.
Today's Stage Info I prepared for today's live thread:
Today is a never ending series of rolling hills and the last 300 meters is uphill to the finish. Will anyone gain time on Christian? Will Cavendish get another sprint win? or will my man George dash away and grab that yellow jersey?
After yesterday’s stage long succession of breakaways and sentimental win by fan fav Michael Barry we are treated to another day of the Missouri countryside and who knows maybe a stage win by American Cycling Legend George Hincapie? (/positive reinforcement)
St. James – Jefferson City, 108 miles or 173 km
Start Time 2:00 PM CDT
General Classification after Stage 4:
1. Christian Vande Velde12.05.13
2. Michael Rogers + 0.18
3. Svein Tuft + 0.43
4. George Hincapie + 1.03
5. Thomas Danielson + 1.27
6. Ben Day + 1.28
7. Roman Kreuziger + 1.54
8. Tom Zirbel + 2.12
9. Dominique Rollin + 2.42
10. Jeffry Louder + 2.42
11. Michael Barry + 2.42
12. Dirk Müller + 3.13
13. Antonio Cruz + 3.23
14. Danilo Wyss + 3.42
15. Marco Pinotti + 4.03
Is there a link
to the universal coverage? I haven’t been able to find video on there yet.

I've got coverage here
a break of 12 including Cav.
woooo... Cavendish in the break?
does that make any sense?

German team Sparkasse are leading the peloton
trying to get the sprint jersey back for Eric Bauman. Interestingly Cavendish rode for Sparkasse a couple of years ago before signing up with T-Mob.
"Sorry! The tour tracker is at its maximum of 100, 000 viewers. Try again later."
Wow. You’d think they’d realize more than 100,000 want to watch.
I got that the other day
but the link to Universal posted in one of the other threads still worked, if patchily at times.
I'm not sure who else is up there
and right on cue the announcers tell us that Mike Creed of Rock Racing is there too.
Break riders from cyclingnews
Mark Cavendish (Team Columbia), Gianni Da Ros (Liquigas), Michael Van Stayen (Rabobank Continental), Lui Alfredo Gutierrez Colunga (Tecos de la Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara), Darren Lill (BMC Racing Team), Michael Creed (Rock Racing), Caleb Manion (Toyota – United Pro Cycling Team), Chris Wherry (Toyota – United Pro Cycling Team), Kyle Gritters (Health Net p/b Maxxis), Luis Amaran (Colavita Sutter Home p/b CookingLight), David Veilleux (Kelly Benefit Strategies – Medifast), Brent Bookwalter (BMC Racing Team)
After being here this week...
There are some serious hills here. The only thing that truly is funny about the KOM is the guy in the Jersery. Rollin is not what I think any of us picture as a climber yet I think we all hope he keeps it to the end. The podium presentation would not be the same with out him up there.
"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."
I love the commentators
it’s like listening to The Fast Show. “The peloton should treat the break like a chef treats a dish” I can’t wait for the “It’s like a woman” moment.
Moto commentary guy
Chris GUTOWSKY, keeps calling Cavendish “Cavanaugh”… I’m afraid I’m going to have to subtract one full point from his score for being stupid
What is cell-phone coverage like where they are today
some of the Universal radio links lead a bit to be desired. They had a supposed interview with the Columbia DS and I didn’t understand a single word.
Trying to stay in touch with friends and even John
I lost signals a lot.
"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."
Lead of about two minutes
Commentators keep losing pictures and are running out of things to say. If they get desperate then they promise to arm wrestle each other.
Nevermind...I figured it out.
Same commentary & video. Universal is a few seconds behind.
Better video though (at least on my screen).
Latest status report
1 3/4 minute lead for the break, 1 1/4 hrs approx to the end of the race
Rightfully so
It is like a train wreck. I can’t stop listening even though I would really like to.

"Someone emailed us asking why this race is a 2.1 on the UCI calendar"
“Well, every year they have a meeting and they decided that this one should be 2.1”
I thought that that was an easy one. The first number is a 1 for on-day races and a 2 for multi-stage ones. The second number is I suppose the difficulty or importance. 2.1 is the top classification for all non-ProTour races. ProTour races don’t get classified, they are just ProTour.
yeah, but the ToB used to be a 2.3. it is actually a little confussing.
pounding along in three ratios like a sonata
like a Ritter with pommelled scrotum atra cura on the step
Botticelli from the fork down pestling the transmission
tires bleeding voiding zeep the highway
Oh I don't claim to be totally accurate
I just thought that it was funny that they were calling for people to email them with questions, and then they choose to answer one that they clearly didn’t know the answer to.
Break splits
4 up road
Lill, Creed, Veilleiux(sp?) and one of the Toyota guys.

The Yahoo Course map
is badass. we need this for EVERY event.
Oddly
it doesn’t seem to match up with the camera view. In terms of things like corners and straights.
OK, I'm in
I want a sprint!

Really is a great rider.

Are the commentators serious
“Michael Barry trying to lead out Mark Cavendish” Someone should brand it on their foreheads: Cavendish doesn’t do hills.
George might be going for the stage
or even Eisel
Eisel
good idea!

Cav's not a hill man
but he was right there but it looked like he got caught behind someone in the train or someone broke it up. We were right before the finish line and that hill they had to come up looked brutal yet there was still a sprint. Farrar was right there too.
"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."
3 miles to go!
Should be an interesting finish. I wouldn’t rule out cavendish or other sprinters, but it won’t be easy.

Boy...
I wish/hope Drew saw the interview after the race. Felt bad for Boy as it was dark outside and he still hadn’t changed. Youch.
But… Boy talked about his cross stuff coming up and he was all smiles about it. Drew would be happy.

"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."
I'm happy now
He didn’t have such a great cross season last year but it was his first with the big boys (U23). Hoping he rebounds this year.
"I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass... and I'm all out of bubblegum."
Drat - looks like the road is calling him and Rabo isn't discouraging that idea either
"I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass... and I'm all out of bubblegum."
Boy's press conference quotes
Did you ride with your father growing up?
All the time, all the time. That’s how it started, I heard there were races for young riders from 10 of age and when I heard that I really wanted to do that. And then, going up. I heard that in the winter, there was cyclocross and that was also fun, so I did both.
Did the sprinting naturally to you or something you learn?
I think it’s naturally.
What do you see in your future, stage racer or classics rider?
Just in the stages. My dream is to ride the Tour de France and to sprint with the best. And also, the Classics in the beginning of the season, I like them very good because my climbing is not so bad.
Is this your first race in the US?
Yes. I like America. I love cars and there are different cars here.
Are you still racing cyclocross? What do you like about it?
Just a short cyclocross season, I think I’m riding only eight cyclocross races, that’s not much. It’s enough for me. You love it or you don’t.
Could you share how the leadout to the finish?
It’s hard to tell because you do it and I forget it. Some people ask ‘what wheel are you’ but I always forget what I’m doing. It’s going very fast and you don’t have to think, you do it. If you’re thinking then you’re too late.
Big, swarming finish
no real strategy, just two dozen guys spread across a 4-lane road hammering away.

I'll vouch...
it was hot and humid for sure. We were sweating just standing there and we hadn’t pedaled a thing.
Those guys had to be beat.
"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."
heh
well, there’d probably be more finishes like that if cycling used wider roads. Also, the climber types don’t really know all the intricacies of mob-sprints.
