La Vuelta Stage 16... LIVE!

La Vuelta Stage 16

Vuelta2-live_medium

Back to the sprinters' show. Which Greg Van Avermaet is about to steal, along with the points jersey. Just 11 points back of the maillot oro and otherwise occupied Alberto Contador, Van Avermaet has a clear shot at an improbable points win. Consider: Boonen, Bennati, Bettini, Freire... all on hand, veterans with long and glamorous points resumes. But Benna's gone, Freire bowed out, and Boonen and Bettini are almost certainly too far back to make a dent. The stage battle will be competitive, but the points battle is almost over.  Enjoy!

Near the summit of the Alto del Acebo

According to VeloNews, early breakaway attempts were brought back and all’s quiet in the peloton.

by majope on Sep 16, 2008 8:13 AM EDT reply actions

Then again, as the VeloNews live feed says...
Man, this is gonna be a sleeper folks. We love bicycle racing more than most, but there are days when the action is … mmmmm…. downright boring at times. We can’t blame the riders, it’s just a combination of factors: route and exhaustion being on the top of the list.

Does that mean I should actually get some work done today?

In other cycling news, CyclingNews reports that Thomas Dekker’s manager told them, “We are speaking with CSC and I must say it looks good.”

CSC? Yay for the strong doping controls, but among the talent at that team he’ll really have to work to shine. Which, come to think of it, probably isn’t a bad thing either.

Truth? Or should we start betting on how many hours until CSC denies it?

by majope on Sep 16, 2008 8:41 AM EDT reply actions

He might have it wrong

TD might end up in an entrylevel programming -job at CSC and not in a job as pro bike rider at Saxo Bank.

I don’t believe a word of it.

Ouch.

Looking around various cycling forums, the word is that Riis wanted Dekker before, but at the time he preferred to stay with Rabobank. And now he’s probably quite a bargain.

Hey, it could happen.

Mini-Schleck and Dekker

Roughly same age, targetting the same races, both with big ambitions. Don’t see why Riis would take on potential problems to fill a position on the team that is already taken?

Carlos Sastre - Tour de France winner - Born From Jets

by Jens on Sep 16, 2008 9:40 AM EDT up reply actions

Yes, but

Schleck II needs to work on his time trialling, an area in which Dekker already excels. I don’t see why having both on the team for a couple of years and seeing how they develop would necessarily be a bad idea.

Have the powers that be ever thought of a 2 week Tour? It really seems that at this point of the calendar everyone is looking at the Worlds. At any rate the end of the year calendar just doesn’t work so well. There are good races but they just don’t click.

saw a video clip of it just now

won’t say where (the usual fear of it then being gone, email me and I’ll send a link if needed) … pretty funny episode.

just wondering, apparently a friend of a friend (American) was quite upset that Flecha dropped the flag because they found it “disrespectful”. Perhaps it’s just me, but isn’t running with the flag beside a bike race while wearing a crazy getup including antlers just as disrespectful if not more so? (or how can you expect respect for the flag, ie. from Flecha, after someone’s already disrespected it in such a way?)

(technically, probably all fans waving flags at sports events are breaking proper flag protocol – so I’m just wondering why someone would be upset by one aspect and yet not other aspects of it…)

the race can organize a fleet of huge trucks who follow the race and lock in at, say 30kph on the cruise control and are on strict orders not to stop, except for crashes. Perhaps they could add flamethrowing capability too.

Matt says the peloton is well behind schedule today.

Does this mean that c.tv might cut out the coverage of today’s stage with 4k left to go? (Sorry, I’m still bitter about Paris-Bruxelles Saturday…)

Worlds not suited to him maybe

Just thinking that the way people are talking the Worlds aren’t super suited to him so this would be a nice jersey. The Stripes would still likely be better if he could, and he isn’t tired.

in case anyone was interested with today's speedy race statistics:
The peloton was determined to have a slow day; 15 kilometres covered in the first hour, 28.3 kilometres in the second and 31.3 kilometres in the third was the speed of cyclo-tourists.

The gap fell down to two minutes in the fourth hour of racing, but the pace was still very slow with Milram and Silence-Lotto at the front of the gruppo. The racing finally looked series with the split at 55 seconds in the final 15 kilometres. The riders covered 33.1 kilometres in the fourth hour and 34 in the fifth.

The duo’s lead was cracked; it has 15 seconds under the 10-kilometre banner. The sprinters’ men were going near 70 kilometres an hour to put their men into position

A frozen 'cross ride from this last weekend. As you may be aware we have had siberian conditions here in the UK with a low of -14 degrees centigrade here on saturday morning. It was a beautiful sunny morning so i layered up and set off for a snowy 'cross ride along a roman road. I checked the thermometer when i got back to find it had been -10 throughout the ride! I had a lot of fun though and the views were spectacular.
