Cross is upon us

Every year about this time the nights grow longer, leaves change colors and seemingly normal people take to hopping off their bikes in crappy weather. Yes, it is time for cross racing once again. If you have never followed the cyclo-cross season then now is as good a time as any to begin. There is a new crop of young talent ascending the ranks in both Europe. This is not to say the old guard have disappeared, but the world champ is 23 and a mighty strong lad. The names Vervecken, Nys, and Wellens will still grace European results pages but they will now be among the names Boom, Stybar, and Albert.

The US calendar will have 40 UCI races this year where all the best talent will appear. The gigantic duo of Ryan Trebon and Bary Wicks will try to step over the competitors in their way, but Jeremy Powers and US champ Tim Johnson should put up a great challenge. Jonathon Page is already winning races this year and looks to challenge on the Euro circuit again after a tumultuous season with Sunweb Projob last year.

I am really pumped about cross racing and I encourage everyone to make an attempt to see a cross race this year. It might be at your local park and the atmosphere is awesome. I doubt you will come away dissapointed. What better way to start your addiction with Cross Vegas on the 24th!

Good work!

I wasn’t planning on anything cross centric until after Worlds but I’m glad you posted. Ctv showed a decent amount of races last year but I don’t know what their current calendar covers. I’ll also check out cyclingfans to see if they’ve got links planned.

When’s your first race? I’ve got one on the 29th.

28th of September

Is when we kick off. I haven’t done nearly enough running to be totally prepared but I am sure it will come. Hopefully cyclingfans will have links to some coverage. I am not into the Ctv set up so it might just be watching clips on youtube if nothing else comes up.

Youse guys

have at it! I still don’t really know anything about cross, and have been increasingly convinced I should stay that way, if only as a self-preservation method for the other 9 months.

except that it’s a party at races, and well me likee parties

Cross can be summed up thusly

Take an off road criterium, combine it with steeplechase, add inclement weather, shake vigorously, serve and enjoy.

amazing

that it isn’t more popular give the make up of it. I think it is a great way to spend a fall afternoon.

well that inclement weather thing is sometimes a problem

but I would love to see a race in the snow , just one race though as I gave up the cold, winter, snow thingie.

Agreed. It's a great spectator sport

and the atmosphere is festive. I had a ball the last time the Nationals were in nearby Rhode Island. Goucester is another great venue. i am hoping to try it as well at a local race or two.

Ha - I haven't done any running at all

Our courses (northeast) tend to have 2-3 sets of barriers and either a run up or a sandpit., which overall is just not that much running. What I do during my weekly training is usually good enough to get me through the season. It certainly doesn’t cost me any places.

Now, if we had some of those ridiculously long beach runs that they have in Belgium and Holland, I’d prepare differently. Thank the gods we don’t, those things are fucking ridiculous.

Without inclimate weather

Our features our runups and sand pits. Although a race can’t be won there it can be lost. I just hate running which makes it all the more odd that I love cross.

I hate running too

So I just look at it as interrupting the race with a few 20 second sprints.

Maybe - didn't he say that 3 years ago?

I won’t believe it til I see him sitting in the commentary booth.

I saw him 3 years ago at my first cross race in the Bay Area

and I had no idea who he was really (shame on me)…. and the towers were there too is I remember correctly.

I'm lucky in that

I get to see all the big names at Gloucester every year. It’s a fantastic course both for watching and racing and anyone who’s a cross fan and lives within a couple hours drive of Boston should really try and take it in. It’s a total scene.

How many dudes is Linda Elgart going to come in ahead of in the Industry Distributor category?

I’ve raced with her, well, combined categories you know, and she is wicked fast.
Faster than me, although these days most people are.

Cross Nationals will be here again in December

Rumor has it that it will be in a new location in town though. I will be there to take it all in again this year.

Collision this time. That was brutal last year.

Ohhhhh... that's almost close enough to make a weekend out of it.

I might have to check this out in more details. There’ s a race up in Madison on 9/27-9/28 that I’m considering driving up for but already made plans that weekend aren’t making the thought very easy.
