Well that clears things up... or not. LOL

Sometimes these Google translations just add confusion. Those interviews come out as pure gibberish.

Carlos Sastre - Tour de France winner - Born From Jets

from CN
CSC’s directeur sportif Scott Sunderland was playing down the Carlos Sastre comments in the Spanish press yesterday. There, he had said he was unhappy that Bjarne Riis didn’t put the strongest team together.

Sunderland told Cyclingnews that there was some misinterpretation. “The comments were taken out of context. What Sastre said was that it was a difficult race overall, also with all the news about the new Cervélo team.”

Sunderland indicated that Sastre would clear up the confusion soon. We will keep you posted.

What's to deny?

Obviously Riis didn’t field the strongest team here. Not even close. He had Jens racing in Germany with something more like a legitimate chance to win (even if it didn’t pan out), and Carlos tilting at the Astana machine. He ruthlessly cut his losses. Is this surprising?

Exactly

If you look at the Tour team, the Schlecks were never likely to ride the Vuelta, Jens was always going to be doing Deutschland instead (esp as he was defending the title), they had Stuey heading the Tour of Britain team and Chris, Kurt and Cance were all taking a well deserved break after Tour/Olympics and so wouldn’t be available to do a 3-week race. Gutsev is the only other member of the team in Spain…

I’ve been saying ever since I saw both the line-ups that the Poland team was stronger overall than the Vuelta one, but wasn’t surprised by the fact for all sorts of reasons

Also colour me unsurprised that Cuesta agreed with him, Sastre could say the world was flat and Inigo would dutifully agree.

by Gemma on Sep 19, 2008 5:27 PM EDT up reply actions

:) Not as far as I know!

I was just using that as an example of how Inigo is very, very loyal to Carlos – the only reason he was on CSC to start with is because Sastre wanted him I’ve heard (he’s going to Cervelo with him too) – absolutely nothing wrong with that I add, a loyal lieutenant is very important. It was the one selection in the Tour team that surprised me actually, that Gutsev was there instead of Cuesta (who’d been there the year before) but I think Cuesta wasn’t quite fit enough or in form to get the Tour ride this year

I can cheer for him again then.

I really like the aspect of faithful lieutenant in cycling. These guys bust their asses and know that they will be rewarded with a job when the star leaves.

Could be lost in the translations or context

He might be trying to explain why he doesn’t have as good a chance of winning because his team isn’t as strong as the one that he rode with in the Tour. Imagine Lance trying to explain to the American press not winning if he didn’t have all the best horses on his team pulling him.

I googled it, it must be true.

Whether right or wrong...

Sastre is clearly pissed. I just looked at the Marca article. He says: “Let’s get real. There’s one person who’s damaged and divided the team from the get-go. He’s still doing it, and this person didn’t want the team to do anything in the Vuelta, that was his intention, he’s done damage to everyone. Deep down, he knows it.” Then he says: “I have no problem with the team, with my teammates, they’ve done everything they possibly could, they’ve been in all the breakaways. You can overcome a lot, but in the end, the person who’s supposed to push really needs to push. That person, far from pushing, has done everything he could to shirk his responsibilities.” Then the journalist asks if he’s talking about Riis, and he says: “Well, he is the main director of the team, isn’t he?” (That last part is much better in Spanish, what he actually says is “máximo dirigente,” as though he were talking about a dictator! Might be some Spanish cycling terminology that I’m missing, but it sure sounds like a put-down. It’s definitely not directeur sportif, which would be director deportivo.)

I like Carlos but

a large part of his Tour win was based on team support. Even with a super strong team in the Vuelta the chances of him beating Contador were not in his favor. Riis is playing percentages too and trying to maximize his team’s chances in a variety of races. I think Carlos needs to cancel the pity party and just get on with things. They’re parting ways in a month, accept it and move on gracefully.

I suspect this has gotten a bit infected

Riis is probably a bit p***** off at the fact that not only did Sastre sign with TTTMNBN but they also seem to be freeriding a bit on the concept CSC has developed in the last years. Both CSC and Cervelo, Zipp, FSA, Speedplay et.al. have benefited from the image of pros and manufacturers working together to optimize the products. TTTMNBN now seem to want to “steal” that image, which probably doesn’t sit well with Bjarne.

Thing is though, he can’t have his cake and eat it too. He chose the money with Specialized and has to live with the consequenses. In all likelyhood he also presented Sastre with a low offer, gambling that he would stay for sentimental, comfort reasons and was disappointed when the gamble misfired.

+1

Actually, though, didn’t he want Sastre out? He has other contenders on his hands and maybe the deal was that it this was to be Carlos’ year, they would be rewarded later.

by nicknorco on Sep 20, 2008 8:52 AM EDT up reply actions

You're probably right

Riis’ attitude was probably “we would love it if you stayed but we won’t pay you that much more and the Schlecks will be free to ride for themselves next year so you might end up working for them”

that was my understanding

That Riis would re-sign Sastre for a good salary, but he wouldn’t guarantee that the team would ride for him alone next season. Which, is fair in my view. I don’t think it would be right to hold back A Schleck next year if he had the legs.

I hardly dare mention it, but there’s also a rumor linked with this polemica that CSC, the sponsor, may join TTTMNBN’d. Allegedly, Riis is red in face ’bout this move. Totally unconfirmed, mind you.

by Jen See on Sep 20, 2008 5:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Holy shit!

I can imagine Riis would be furious if this was true (and then some), and who the hell could blame him?? I mean I know sponsors have sometimes said they were leaving and then changed their minds (Barloworld being the most recent) but that has normally all happened over a short period of time and the sponsor ends up still with the same team. I can’t remember a situation where a sponsor says it was pulling out as it wanted to do something different etc and then months later changed its mind and decided to stay, but with another team!!

I hope it’s not true as it would leave a nasty taste in the mouth and it would be CSC who would be the bad guys (at least as far as I’m concerned)

And I agree that Andy should be allowed to go for it next year if he’s in form – the idea of him and Bert going head to head is great – and here’s hoping they would both beat the pants of HWMNBN, the sport needs to be about the future, not the past. I really do think that this was Sastre’s year and he took his chance, but that with all the other options that Sexy Bank have now he would have had to accept that he wasn’t the future of the team…

Speaking of the team – I’m still waiting for news of a certain Swiss and whether he’s doing the worlds! I’ve been checking and no sign of any news yet!! Wish they would put me out of my misery :)

by Gemma on Sep 20, 2008 6:20 PM EDT up reply actions

I can imagine Riis is probably upset, but we don't really know the whole story

If CSC decides to go with the Cervelo team, it will probably be for reasons that we are no privy to. As far as problems between Riis and Sastre, I doubt that Riis would purposefully lose a race like the Vuelta, but I doubt he would want to send Sastre to another team with a Vuelta win, provided that is, that CSC would have beaten Astana in the first place. So, if Sastre didn’t get the strongest team, it was definitely not by accident. The Tour of Poland is not the Vuelta, but they had a strong team there.

I think you're right, and also

Sastre got screwed by circumstances this year. Lot’s of CSC riders rode the olympics this year and at Vuelta-time riders are always going to be looking at preparing as well as possible for the Worlds. For many that does not mean riding a hard GT but rather riding a small not so important race like T o Poland. Sastre got sandwiched between those two, tired Olympics riders and preparing riders, and was never going to hav an all-star lineup whether Riis wanted to or not.

Great to see you back by the way.

of course, the tour of Poland was not so enjoyable this year...

made me wonder how many of the CSC riders started to wish, after a couple of days, that they were instead in sunny spain, UCI pro tour team standings competition be damned.

Oh, look…the US and Switzerland are tied in the UCI national standings. Isn’t that cute? With Luxembourg 23 points up on them.

Understood that it’s a european pro tour.

Someone with good graphics skills needs to make a world map with countries shown proportional to bike sales (total? per person?) so we can see if this is as disproportionate as it seems.

Thanks, glad to be back

I’ve been lurking, but I’ve pissed quite a few off here and just wanted to give it some time before posting again. On a lighter subject, I’ve received orders back to Germany. Looks like I’ll be visiting some bike races in person for the next 3 years starting at the beginning of the year.
