Team Columbia News
Via the Comic. Bob Stapleton:
"He [Mark Cavendish] has signed through to 2011. He's signed for two years and there's an option for 2011, meaning he stays with us if we want him. It's virtually a three-year deal. We don't build the team around individual athletes, we keep it open to the best talent but Mark's obviously a top talent. He's not only a star of the future but he's a star of today. We think the world of him and wanted to keep him. We wanted to make sure we have him as a long-term member of the team. He's shown unlimited potential and continued to make rapid progress with Grand Tour performances. We want to stay very focused on that and we can do a better job at that if we all focused on the long term. Mark had to make a decision what was going to meet his long term needs and we're one of the strongest teams in the world and I think the best to carry him forward with athletic support and getting him what he needs to develop. It makes sense for us, it makes sense for Mark and British Cycling will do whatever makes sense for them."
"We had to see where people fitted into the team this year after bringing in 14 new riders. There was a lot of top new talent and so we had to see who could do what. For example, our sprint train really improved during the Giro d'Italia. We brought a lot of those skills into the Tour de France and we want to continue building on that. We're going to focus more resources and make some roles more clear but the team is still wide open. The team won races with 16 different riders this year, so we're always going to cultivate that. It probably helps Cav to have guys who can go in breaks and win but also do the work to chase down attacks. Part of the reward for the riders who work hard is that they get chances to win other races. That formula works."

The man's right
Who can argue with Columbia’s success. Ridiculous is one way to put it.
If I just had one more gear, I...
must... remain... objective...
T-Mobile was pretty much a disaster in its last Godefruit years, and Stapleton inherited a talented rebuilding project. OK, they didn’t sort it all out in a single season, but the sprint train and classics team made massive strides. Within two years they’ll be the best team ev… um, anyway, things are looking promising.

“It probably helps Cav to have guys who can go in breaks and win but also do the work to chase down attacks”
Is that a message for Brad Wiggins?
Thumbs up to Stapleton for producing what has looked like the most united team around this year. They genuinely look like they want to get wins for each other, and not just because it is their job.
Is that a message for Brad Wiggins?
Possibly. But given how many – or few, if you prefer – times Wiggo has worn the Columbia jersey this season, you’d have to wonder if he even registers on Stapleton’s radar.

Cav is a superstar, no doubt,
but what about the GC guys. Both Lovkist and Gerdemann are progressing rapidly. One of them will blossom into a GT contender (my bet is on Gerdemann). It sounds like the Tour team is going to be built exclusively around Cav. I know I’ve heard rumblings about Linus moving to Milram. Given the comments from Stapleton, it doesn’t sound like there’s a whole lot of incentive to stick around if you’ve got GC aspirations. I like Columbia a whole lot, but I hope Linus moves on.
That's a bit harsh
Linus had the team behind him a couple of times this year, and could well have had more if he hadn’t broken his leg. And Cycling Weekly is a British publication so they are more interested in Cav than just general team matters.
Only time you can foresee trouble is the Tour
Hard to see Cav on the same team as an absolute podium-contender but none of Columbias guys are there yet. At their level they should be happy with 1-2 guys (+ 1-2 more slightly used up in the 2-3:rd week) as their dedicated helpers.
