Bad news: No more Tour de Georgia?

It is very likely there will be no ToG in 2009.  Cyclingnews.com Sept 06 has the first I've seen of this news.  Bad news on Nor Am circuit if anyone is asking.  The organizers site the usual lack of sponsorship and financial losses.  So far the googler turns up nothing else.

Chris here -- just filling in the end with a thought: would the Tour of California be better off moving into this slot??

Not totally surprised by this

since they’ve had this trouble in the past and there;s so much going on in April in Europe.

ToC has had an indirect impact as well.

yep there seems to always be something withthis race.

They also seem to pull something out of a hat at the witching hour and get it done….

Sigh

Lots of chatter about this at this year’s ToG, without anyone ever quite being able to say why.

Title sponsor Dodge

is going through extremely rough finacial times. DAI is down about 54 points since November. Don’t look for GM or Ford to jump in either…

Well, who's doing well these days?

China for the title sponsor? They’re underwriting everything else. Perhaps we could get Exxon-Mobil to sponsor the sprints with Drill Here, Drill Now!* banners.

*Just don’t ask us to, uh, sell here.

Business is Bad?

If business is bad is the reason for the race bombing then watch out Tour of California. Amgen must be on the rocks now sales of EPO have bottomed out.

Volvo

How ‘bout getting Volvo on board? Seem to recall a way-back ad of there’s which more or less said that in a Volvo you could drive over a cyclist and not feel a thing..

Dodge...

…has not sponsored the race for a couple of years. This year’s edition was “presented by” AT&T.

I thought so,,,

Dodge bailing was the start of the “maybe it will happen, maybe it will not happen” phase of the race….

tour of cali

No, bad idea to move it so that it conflicts with the Ardennes. It’s a perfect early season race. Move it to April, and you’ll see far fewer big names making the trip from Europe. Also, since ASO is involved in promoting it now, they are unlikely to support a move that puts it head-to-head with Liége. As it stands, Tour of Cali is a great lead-in to Paris-Nice and the other early season European races. Move it, and it looses that draw. Not too many big name Europeans will want to travel all the way to the west coast of the US once the season is going on. That’s a whole lotta jet lag right there.

Makes sense

April is tempting, but crowded.

Yes - ToC is perfectly positioned both

as an extended training camp / hard race for European teams (making the long travel worthwhile) and as Gav points out a great lead in to Paris-Nice, etc. If the move to April it will totally lose both its luster and its heavy European participation.

If memory serves wasn’t TdG basically born out of Lance’s desire to have an early season stage race at home? And using his name they were able to draw interest from some of the other European teams (especially those with Tour riders)?

There are sponsors...

but generally speaking in the south if it isn’t college football, golf or NASCAR, then there’s a huge sucking sound when something is suggested outside the good ole boy circle.

ToC should keep it's spot

I think it has gained an identity in it’s current spot. Sure it may not get riders in peak form but it gets a great startingfield of riders who wouldn’t think of going to the US any other time of the year. And with a good parcours (as it had this year) we get exciting racing at a time we are all starving for it.

Georgia can't get the teams/riders

Georgia the last couple of years became a major domestic race, not an international race on the Euro calendar. Missouri is about the same. California in February is an international race. Since most of the money in cycling comes from Europe it’s kinda obvious that Georgia’s urge to be a true HC race were not viable in the long run.

by ursula on Sep 6, 2008 4:39 PM EDT reply actions

Not sure that it needs too many Euro riders

It needs Levi & George to show up (tho’ I’d personally be just as happy if they didn’t), and probably one or two B* squads from Europe. The spectators that any sponsors are hoping to draw really don’t care.

I’d love to see the budgets for the last couple of years.

*Or C-squad, it really doesn’t matter. Just something to let them label it as international. Tho’ they’ll hopefully do a better job than what we saw with the GE-Trek Marco Polo team. That was just . . . ugh. Felt bad for everyone involved with that.

If only it could become part of the new protour

or whatever the hell it’s called this week. Then teams would have to go.

Sad, sad, sad

I’ve been to the last three editions of this race. Good course, great venues, great support. The Brasstown Bald climb is tougher than most anything the pros see in Europe. It has fielded great teams and drawn great riders, e.g., Cipollini, Armstrong, Landis, Simoni. The finishing circuits in Atlanta are spectacular, with a great uphill finish. Due to its spot on the calendar, it seems best suited to draw the contenders for the Giro, which is not exactly the crowd that interests local fans. I have a semi-theory about its death blow. Svitsov won the race this year with his climb on Brasstown Bald, hardly somebody that would generate interest in the US. They left out the ITT for the first time this year. If there would have been an ITT, somebody like Leipheimer would have won it and generated much more buzz.

Damnit!

I've heard a lot of people say

that the TOC is over once a Euro wins it. As long as Levi keeps peaking for it we should be okay.

by brunopitton on Sep 7, 2008 10:06 AM EDT up reply actions

Even if it's someone like Bettini or Candelera?

If a cool European won it, would it be a problem?

I’d still go out.

by Rushfan on Sep 8, 2008 1:38 PM EDT up reply actions

well

Brasstown is great, but it sure would be nice if it weren’t the entire race. They need to find another mountain (plenty around!) and stick it in there. As to crowd interests, think back to those around you, and then take out enthusiasm for George, Levi, and Lance – does anyone care about the composition of the field after that? Not in my experience. The pro fans are a tiny component, and the rest are just excited to see all these strange guys in spandex passing through their town.

Svitsov’s victory was certainly a disappointment to the organizers, I think – not so much because no one knows him, but because the guy’s a painfully shy and understated interview in English. The only thing that saved Brajkovic from a similar media fate was his willingness to let his excitement outshine his troubles with the language (well, that and the whole Disco machine which jumped in to help (cf., High Road’s quietly letting Svitsov have the stage to himself).

A frozen 'cross ride from this last weekend. As you may be aware we have had siberian conditions here in the UK with a low of -14 degrees centigrade here on saturday morning. It was a beautiful sunny morning so i layered up and set off for a snowy 'cross ride along a roman road. I checked the thermometer when i got back to find it had been -10 throughout the ride! I had a lot of fun though and the views were spectacular.
