La Vuelta Stage 8... LIVE!
La Vuelta Stage 8
Here we go again. Funny, the queen stage doesn't always turn into the one that matters. Had the weather improved, maybe yesterday would've been the day. And if it clears today, maybe the action will explode up the Pla de Beret. If nothing else, we saw in the Giro how the modest mountain stage can trump the big ticket item, if the riders decide to make the race on the lesser slopes. Of course, in the Tour we saw how the riders can also wait til the ultimate mega-stage before laying down their cards... another distinct possibility. Anyway, today should be one to watch regardless. Enjoy!

The always encouraging Dekker on
Gesink’s ride yesterday:
Robert Gesink finished in eleventh place, but the captain could have done better. “It does crash our party a bit,” concluded Dekker. “He blacked out on two kilometers from the finish and was very hungry. He lost time because of it, a terrible waste.” Gesink is now twelfth in the general classification.
He got a 20 seconds penalty for
taking something from the teamcar in the last 2km. They knew they go he pnalty but they though it was better to have a penalty then being hungry..

well, attack
First attack
No sooner have the riders reached the first kilometre of the first climb and we are seeing the first attack, which is being launched by Tinkoff climber 187 (PEDRAZA MORALES Walter Fernando ), and Russian Xacobeo-Galicia rider 119 (VORGANOV Eduard ),
Some say the best things in life, are one the inside.
More attacks
And the attacks just keep on coming, with 16 (LOUBET Julien ), taking his shot now. 66 (MONCOUTIE David ), is four seconds behind and the pack is riding 22 seconds behind.
More and yet more attacks
The race is going totally crazy. Attacks are happening left and right and the following racers are now in the lead: 121 (CUNEGO Damiano ), 52 (ARROYO DURAN David ), 37 (PAULINHO Sergio Miguel Moreira ), 56 (LOSADA ALGUACIL Alberto ), 184 (PETROV Evgeny ), 85 (MARTINEZ DE ESTEBAN Egoi ), 166 (LLOYD Matthew ), 2 (KOLOBNEV Alexandr ), and 152 (ARDILA CANO Mauricio Alberto ),. Among those up front, mechanical problem (with the chain) for 66 (MONCOUTIE David ),.
all together now
The pack is back together again. Attacks all over the place, but for the moment the breakaway of the day is eluding everyone.
Still trying to break out
The cyclists with the desire to break away are back at it. Now 74 (KERN Christophe ), is in the lead with 184 (PETROV Evgeny ), chasing him from 10 seconds back. The main pack is 18 behind 74 (KERN Christophe ),, whose breakaway attempt began at kilometre 25. This is a very rapid ascent of the Cantó summit.
Four in the lead
184 (PETROV Evgeny ), has been caught again and four riders now enjoy an 18 second edge over the main pack: 185 (KIRYIENKA Vasili ), 14 (DUPONT Hubert ), 95 (JOLY Sébastien ), and 74 (KERN Christophe ),, who triggered the attack.

First hour results
The first hour of racing is over with an average of 30.4 k./h. Three racers are in the lead currently: 14 (DUPONT Hubert ), 174 (GRIVKO Andriy ), and 185 (KIRYIENKA Vasili ),.

but this morning it’s sunny and warm, with the wind starting to blow just a little bit. That weather should hold for the rest of the day so the game time weather should be uneventful.

The pack intact again
The pack is once again well-bunched up. Astaná is beginning to work very hard because 61 (CHAVANEL Sylvain ), has moved into the lead group and that set off the alarms. The breakaway riders were 66 (MONCOUTIE David ), 74 (KERN Christophe ), 185 (KIRYIENKA Vasili ), and 14 (DUPONT Hubert ),, who were joined by 38 (RUBIERA VIGIL José Luis ), 141 (BETTINI Paolo ), 183 (ESKOV Nikita ), 95 (JOLY Sébastien ), 166 (LLOYD Matthew ), 52 (ARROYO DURAN David ), 101 (REBELLIN Davide ), 2 (KOLOBNEV Alexandr ), 121 (CUNEGO Damiano ), 85 (MARTINEZ DE ESTEBAN Egoi ), 7 (BRESCHEL Matti ), and the aforemention 61 (CHAVANEL Sylvain ),. After the great effort by the teammates of 31 (CONTADOR VELASCO Alberto ),, the pack is back intact.

Weather here for now is great though. Lyne said it was raining in KC.
"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."
Hey...
Not sure you saw my note yesterday but C, I believe, is throwing the first pitch at the KC game today.
"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."
Five in the lead
Many changes up front and it seems like a successful breakaway has finally materialised. Five racers are in it and they’ve opened up a 1-20 lead over the main pack. The breakaway riders are 74 (KERN Christophe ), 183 (ESKOV Nikita ), 95 (JOLY Sébastien ), 144 (GARATE Juan Manuel ), and 66 (MONCOUTIE David ),, most of whom have been trying to break away ever since the race reached the slopes of Cantó.
Heading downhill now
The cyclists are now on the descent from Cantó and the breakaway has a 2-23 margin over the main pack so this could be the breakaway of the day. A reminder of the racers out ahead of the pack: 144 (GARATE Juan Manuel ), 183 (ESKOV Nikita ), 74 (KERN Christophe ), 95 (JOLY Sébastien ), and 66 (MONCOUTIE David ),.
For the sake of my Bottle Runners...
Go Moncoutie! :-)
Enjoy the race today and write lots! I’ll catch up later tonight.
"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."
Garate and Moncoutie could make it.
Eskov is an allorunder. Finished in the top 15 in the sprint. Don’t know if he can climb. Someone?
Joly the guy how had some terifying desease last year. (And that with such a lovely name?!?) Nice to see him back here. Big attitude!
Kern.. Big question. Ride in the peleton.. Nothing more
Some say the best things in life, are one the inside.
Well, according to his profile
on Eurosport, Eskov is 2007 cm tall. I would think that kind of height would be a disadvantage in the mountains—but any time he’s in the main pack at the finish, a good lean forward would give him the win.
Contrast that with, say, Sebastien Joly, whose profile lists him at a mere 1.80 cm (I’m including the links to both of these to prove that I am absolutely not making them up). Not surprising he’s in a breakaway—at less than an inch tall, he’s flying under everyone’s radar.
Mr Van P just had an aneuyrism
trying to caalculate the length of the top tube of Eskov’s bike.

Milram has signed three of its fellow German squad’s riders, including Fabian Wegmann, Linus Gerdemann and Markus Fothen.
Gerdemann? He's on Columbia.
Did they sign him too? Big catch if they did.

I guess I can’t blame Gerdemann if he doesn’t want to pull a train he’s got talent.
Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana. - G. Marx
Sorry to see Gerdemann leaving Columbia
but I’d read he wanted to be on a German team, so good for him. But all I can find in the press are reports (kicker.de, ouest-france), that Milram is negotiating with both him and Ciolek, and expect to have things wrapped up by the Worlds, so it might not be a done deal yet.
Gerdemann
All available reports – except this VN thingy – are that Milram is currently negotiating with Stapleton to acquire Gerdemann. No one else is reporting it as a done deal, by any means. Stapleton is holding out for big cash, or really doesn’t want to let him go. Ciolek is also still on the wish list for Milram, and not yet confirmed. His contract is up from Columbia, though, so it’s widely expected that he will transfer.
The other transfers to Milram, yes, those have been reported (here and elsewhere) already as confirmed. Also, Milram the spnosor will continue with the team until the end of 2010.
Good morning /afternoon/whwatever everyone!
Have no fear , this breakaway is doomed. I have both Moncoutie and Joly.

well that's a bit harsh,
Contador didn’t have any chance to ride none of the climbs before in the Giro, not even time to prepare for the race properly.
I know how anti-Astana some of you are here, that is fine, but what he did at the Giro was pretty amazing, considering the situation he was put at.
And he did attack today…
for me...
it’s “even steven” – my +2 meant that if Contador followed wheels strategically in the Giro, Valverde was entitled to do the same here.
curious, why is that?
Contador sucking wheels when being thrown in a GT after a very short notice, in a country he had raced years ago, unfamiliar with any of the course or route, was bad, but Valverde riding in his home GT, which he knew all along he’d do and knows the route, and still sucks wheels is okay?
and...
Valverde was no doubt well aware of the opportunity that presented itself today and how to make the most of it. as someone else pointed out, one more hill and…
so good for him for working it and timing things well.
i went into my thoughts on this in more detail in the post-stage thread…

Chav hangs in for 11th...
and props to Cornu for staying up there (3+ mins) – not bad for a TTer in a race not made for TTers…
yeah, i'm impressed with Cornu
obviously pre-race everyone figured Popo would be team leader – so for Cornu to be hanging in there for 14th overall on GC is pretty good (Popo is now 27+ minutes down)
