La Vuelta Stage 9

The road to Sabiñánigo is paved with ups and downs, the likes of which should make for some misery along the way. But after two days of uphill finishes, this episode is one of survival for the top guys, who won't find any time gaps in the last 65km, apart from the usual Valverde acceleration at the end. Break caught

The break has been caught on the descent of Coll de l´Espina. The high pace being set by Astana has broken the group into three, with all the favourites close to the head of the first bunch.

by Bruce Suomi on Sep 8, 2008 8:04 AM EDT reply actions

New attack

A 10-man break has formed: 121 (CUNEGO Damiano ), 169 (VAN AVERMAET Greg ), 86 (PEREZ LEZAUN Alan ), 147 (TONTI Andrea ), 59 (ZANDIO ECHAIDE Xabier ), 71 (HALGAND Patrice ), 153 (FLECHA GIANNONI Juan Antonio ), 74 (KERN Christophe ), 101 (REBELLIN Davide ), and 66 (MONCOUTIE David ), have a lead of 18 seconds over the group containing the Golden Jersey, followed by a second group at 41 seconds.

ha ha!

You’re in my time zone then – I’m in London too.

Do you ride with a team/club locally?

by rebeccactv on Sep 8, 2008 8:34 AM EDT reply actions

No I don't, I just ride about alone!

I live on the edge of London so I can be in the country in 5 minutes. I’d love to join a club but I’m a bit scared I’d be too slow :-|

by Albertina on Sep 8, 2008 8:38 AM EDT up reply actions

You wouldn't be too slow!

I know what you mean though about the clubs – I was always worried about getting dropped from the chain gang but there are some clubs that cater for us girls really well. I live south east london so i tend to get down to box hill or the kent/surrey hills for a bit of a loop but often end up in Richmond Park for convinience!!

There are always a few friendly clubs at the park who meet at the cafe and are happy for new-comers to tag along.

by rebeccactv on Sep 8, 2008 8:46 AM EDT reply actions

I'm way out east.

I’m probably just being paranoid….I’m a rubbish climber but I’m not hugely unfit! I should look into clubs; it would certainly be nice to have company. I’m doing a sponsored ride on Saturday, visiting as many Essex churches as i can in a day-quite looking forward to testing myself, though I hope I don’t get as wet as I did this past Saturday!

by Albertina on Sep 8, 2008 8:49 AM EDT up reply actions

ha ha!

The ride sounds cool – the weather’s been so depressing hasn’t it!? I can feel my fitness sapping away! I can’t climb either – made myself ride the Tour of the Surrey Hills the other weekend in attempt to learn to love ascending but in all honesty I found it hell!!! Too many 23% averages! Felt like I averaged about 2 mph!!!!

by rebeccactv on Sep 8, 2008 8:54 AM EDT up reply actions

Oh gosh....

I seriously don’t do 23%…..wish I could but….just no! I ought to consciously seek out hills to try and improve but I’m too lazy and usually avoid them which is so very bad!

by Albertina on Sep 8, 2008 9:02 AM EDT up reply actions

yeah...

…that’s mostly my theory…avoid them!! That’s why I stick to Richmond Park as it has no major hills!! And I race on the velodrome which is fabulous because then you really never have to go up hill!! lol!

by Albertina on Sep 8, 2008 9:19 AM EDT up reply actions

ah wicked!

I was by the big screen but didn’t get a clear view of the line – great to see it coming through the capital again.

by rebeccactv on Sep 8, 2008 9:23 AM EDT up reply actions

Not too far from me then.

I could sort of see the big screen but not very well as there was a tree in the way! We did get the pleasure of Hugh Porter’s commentary though and his fruitless attempts to pronounce Di Luca’s first name properly; he kept calling him Dan-ee-el with no hint of a final o whatsoever!

by Albertina on Sep 8, 2008 9:26 AM EDT up reply actions

I was probably very close to you

We wandered around with Rebecca for a bit, then headed to the finish line to see the finish and get up to a bit of mischief. Great circuit, just a shame it was too long to walk around, since I’d have liked to have seen the whole thing.

I know it’s gawdy, tacky, etc. But too often, the peloton is dreadfully bland. I used to hate the Rock jersey’s until seeing the team race live. Once you compare them to the rest of the peloton, you realize how boring most kits are.
