La Vuelta Stage 9... LIVE!
La Vuelta Stage 9
The road to Sabiñánigo is paved with ups and downs, the likes of which should make for some misery along the way. But after two days of uphill finishes, this episode is one of survival for the top guys, who won't find any time gaps in the last 65km, apart from the usual Valverde acceleration at the end. The existence of time bonuses and

Good morning everyone.
The riders are in the neutral zone, and VeloNews has started their live coverage with the news that Kohl has indeed signed with Lotto.

Matthew Lloyd didn't start.
And Bobby Julich has formally announced that he’s retiring at the end of the season.
wow the return of bio-pace?
who knew? Maybe everybody but me? Did I ever tell you that story about when I had bio-pace on my bike and me and Julich were off the front…oh wait a minute…

Five riders break away
181 (IGNATIEV Mikhail ), 153 (FLECHA GIANNONI Juan Antonio ), 168 (TJALLINGII Maarten ), }66 (MONCOUTIE David ), and 132 (AGNOLI Valerio ), have broken away from the main group a little over 1 km from the top of the first climb.

Various team try to create a break
As the race continues at a high pace, the Milram, Euskaltel, Xacobeo-Galicia and Silence-Lotto teams are trying unsuccessfully to create a break.
another four riders have a slight lead

Break caught
The break has been caught on the descent of Coll de l´Espina. The high pace being set by Astana has broken the group into three, with all the favourites close to the head of the first bunch.
New attack
A 10-man break has formed: 121 (CUNEGO Damiano ), 169 (VAN AVERMAET Greg ), 86 (PEREZ LEZAUN Alan ), 147 (TONTI Andrea ), 59 (ZANDIO ECHAIDE Xabier ), 71 (HALGAND Patrice ), 153 (FLECHA GIANNONI Juan Antonio ), 74 (KERN Christophe ), 101 (REBELLIN Davide ), and 66 (MONCOUTIE David ), have a lead of 18 seconds over the group containing the Golden Jersey, followed by a second group at 41 seconds.
The groups join
The two groups have joined on the descent, whilst the break composed of 121 (CUNEGO Damiano ), 169 (VAN AVERMAET Greg ), 86 (PEREZ LEZAUN Alan ), 147 (TONTI Andrea ), 59 (ZANDIO ECHAIDE Xabier ), 71 (HALGAND Patrice ), 153 (FLECHA GIANNONI Juan Antonio ), 74 (KERN Christophe ), 101 (REBELLIN Davide ), 66 (MONCOUTIE David ), 11 (NOCENTINI Rinaldo ), and 85 (MARTINEZ DE ESTEBAN Egoi ), has a lead of 20 seconds over 98 (VANENDERT Jelle ), and 42 seconds over the main group.
No I don't, I just ride about alone!
I live on the edge of London so I can be in the country in 5 minutes. I’d love to join a club but I’m a bit scared I’d be too slow :-|
You wouldn't be too slow!
I know what you mean though about the clubs – I was always worried about getting dropped from the chain gang but there are some clubs that cater for us girls really well. I live south east london so i tend to get down to box hill or the kent/surrey hills for a bit of a loop but often end up in Richmond Park for convinience!!
There are always a few friendly clubs at the park who meet at the cafe and are happy for new-comers to tag along.
I'm way out east.
I’m probably just being paranoid….I’m a rubbish climber but I’m not hugely unfit! I should look into clubs; it would certainly be nice to have company. I’m doing a sponsored ride on Saturday, visiting as many Essex churches as i can in a day-quite looking forward to testing myself, though I hope I don’t get as wet as I did this past Saturday!
ha ha!
The ride sounds cool – the weather’s been so depressing hasn’t it!? I can feel my fitness sapping away! I can’t climb either – made myself ride the Tour of the Surrey Hills the other weekend in attempt to learn to love ascending but in all honesty I found it hell!!! Too many 23% averages! Felt like I averaged about 2 mph!!!!
Oh gosh....
I seriously don’t do 23%…..wish I could but….just no! I ought to consciously seek out hills to try and improve but I’m too lazy and usually avoid them which is so very bad!
yeah...
…that’s mostly my theory…avoid them!! That’s why I stick to Richmond Park as it has no major hills!! And I race on the velodrome which is fabulous because then you really never have to go up hill!! lol!
Yes, I was supposedly stewarding
although I ended up doing precisely nothing. I just stood by the start/finish line all day looking official and in the process got the best spot in the house! Where were you?
ah wicked!
I was by the big screen but didn’t get a clear view of the line – great to see it coming through the capital again.
Not too far from me then.
I could sort of see the big screen but not very well as there was a tree in the way! We did get the pleasure of Hugh Porter’s commentary though and his fruitless attempts to pronounce Di Luca’s first name properly; he kept calling him Dan-ee-el with no hint of a final o whatsoever!
I was probably very close to you
We wandered around with Rebecca for a bit, then headed to the finish line to see the finish and get up to a bit of mischief. Great circuit, just a shame it was too long to walk around, since I’d have liked to have seen the whole thing.
The
lead group consists of CUNEGO, FLECHA, VAN AVERMAET, MONCOUTIE, MARTINEZ ,Alan PEREZ, Andrea TONTI, Xabier ZANDIO, Patrice HALGAND, Christophe KERN and Davide REBELLIN. They lead by 2.40
I don't know much about Rebellin
What do you guys think about him?
Should be perfect for Rebellin today
and he deserves a big victory soon, with so many second and thirds this year.
Rebellin is a great rider
He excels at one-day races and has won his share of week-long stage races, too.
if the break stays away, a slight uphill tick at the finish, good for rebellin
just like the ardennes classics

I love it
I know it’s gawdy, tacky, etc. But too often, the peloton is dreadfully bland. I used to hate the Rock jersey’s until seeing the team race live. Once you compare them to the rest of the peloton, you realize how boring most kits are.
Rock racing
I do know what you mean and I actually loved the original black kit, thought it had a great edge! I’m just not sure about the new revisions to the strip….
grrrr Eurosport
By the time the live coverage starts all the climbs will be finished ;(

Chav says...
Sylvain Chavanel of Cofidis enjoyed the two days in yellow (the rest day was spent in yellow, too). “It was really great. I came here to win a stage. Getting second in a stage and then taking the yellow jersey was terrific.” He had hoped to maybe hang on to the lead for one more day, but was not too disappointed with his Vuelta so far. “I am not a climber, I am a rouleur. But I am improving in the mountains….”

it's like...
SL is the black hole for GC riders…
i’m going to wait and see on this one – being a CE fan, i’m glad to see an actual climber/all-rounder of Kohl’s calibre go to SL, but i can’t picture how this is going to work…
but without more GC riders, SL might as well have kissed the TdF goodbye…
moncoutie well ahead

Martinez will be in yellow. But they’ve brought it back to 6:18 at the moment.

Poor Levi
For all he gives the team, you’d think they could expend a little energy to keep him in gold. Really, it’s a small thing.
