Tour Down Under Broadcast Schedule, Versus

Versus Channel race coverage of the Tour Down Under starts Sunday. They are listing the following dates and times for their shows. It looks like Adelaide, Australia is 18.5 hours ahead of US pacific coast time. It is going to be incredibly difficult not to accidentally hear or see the race results before heading home to watch the TiVoed shows each day. Good news though. Versus did add live web coverage of the final stage of the race starting at 10:00 pm ET. That means us US west coast folks get to watch in prime time on a Saturday evening. Nice.

Sunday, January 18th
4:00 - 4:30 pm ET

Tdu_medium Tuesday, January 20th

Wednesday, January 21st

Thursday, January 22nd

Friday, January 23rd
4:00 - 4:30 pm ET

Saturday, January 24th
3:30 - 4:00 pm ET

Live Coverage of Final Stage (On Versus.com only)
Saturday, January 24th
10:00 pm ET

Sunday, January 25th
5:00 - 6:00 pm ET

The Versus schedule has no information about what will be shown during each time slot. Considering the stage race doesn't start until the 20th (the 19th in the US) can we assume this Sunday's show is a preview? You know, the standard  "Lance is making a comeback. The King has returned." stuff. Probably.

Edited to add: The pre-race Criterium "Cancer Council Classic" is on the 18th and all riders are required to in attendance. Thanks to Phil H. for pointing this out.

For the rest of the schedule the date of the show is probably the same date the race was held in Australia. This gives Versus that 15.5 hour time difference to do their editing and whatnot. Taking a 5-6 hour bike race down to a 30 minute show must be quite a feat.

Looks we will have our first real road racing Live Thread of 2009 on the 24th.  Yeah!

CyclingTV now has a schedule up for their Tour Down Under coverage. It states it is worldwide coverage..

search for Tour Down Under as it doesn’t show up on the generic “cycling” the vs usually identifies the races

I found it. It wasn't easy. For some reason it didn't shown up under

Tour Down Under either. I had to go online and use the TiVo online scheduling for the time and date. Versus is not very good at adding descriptions to their show line-up.

ah... for directv it will show under Tour Down Under

tivo so quickly became generic

The broadcast on the 18th is from the down under classic

which is a crit that all the riders have to participate in but doesn’t count for the GC. Versus also has their full schedule up at it’s site. They are showing the ToC but only 5 stages live, so I will have to count on Ctv(oh crap!). All the other events they are only showing recaps of except for the Tour obviously.

That makes sense. I wish Versus would add descriptions to their schedule.

And I’m thinking Versus probably has all US broadcast rights to the Tour of California. I doubt CyclingTV will have it even though it might be on their “schedule.”

ctv will have it, just not available in north america

tho, could get ctv live last year for the ATOC w/o a prob

=====

the weekend coverage of ATOC won’t be that much delayed

Do you know that for sure or is that just speculation?

It doesn’t say much yet on Ctv but they write that all stages will be live and there is no mention of North American viewers being blocked out.

Wait are you talking about the TdU or ToC

because I’m talking about the ToC being shown live and I don’t see the times up for that yet. The TdU stages will be at 10:30 delayed.

sorry, TDU....

ctv only lists live events for two-week periods at a time….

I just checked the CyclingTV schedule for the Tour Down Under

<a href=" http://www.cycling.tv/ViewArticle.dbml?&DB_OEM_ID=20300&ATCLID=3640931&SPID=12555&SPSID=101762." target="new">here. They are having 45 minute recap/highlight shows. I see nothing about any live coverage. If you see it please post the link.

by ZoeRochelle on Jan 12, 2009 3:24 PM EST up reply actions

I think they had it last year in the US

If Versus blocks coverage of an event that they are not showing live they can go f**k themselves, if they would show it live then I wouldn’t have to watch on Ctv. But if the ToC still has the Tour tracker than I’ll follow it there. Errrrrrrrrrr

Taking a 5-6 hour bike race down to a 30 minute show must be quite a feat.

the stages are mostly “sprint”/“rolling” and not much excitement til the end….
you can go to ctv and see the “highlights” for the TDU from 2004 thru 2008

Willunga stage

should be nice. I think this year they have to climb Willunga 2 times (last year only one) near the finish.

30min? ha!

Recall that half-hour shows have about 22.5minutes of programming…

Apparently Phil Ligget will also be doing "Lance updates"

so that will be 5 minutes of talking to Lance and the sprint finish.

hum...ok

So, i heard today that Contador will begin is season in Volta ao Algarve. Gilbert, Chavanel, Grasbsch, Devolder, Cunego? and Ballan? maybe. So i have to prepare my photo machine!! :)

by semprenaroda on Jan 12, 2009 3:49 PM EST up reply actions

yep

contador will be algarve, first race of his season. not sure about the others.

by Jen See on Jan 12, 2009 3:55 PM EST up reply actions

He will also be doing P-N

then off to defend his title at the Vuelta Castilla Leon, then to defend his title at the Tour of the Basque Country, probably nothing in May, then the Dauphine in June. Some Tour de France thingy in July that apparently has some importance to it, then he has yet to decide on the Vuelta(although I think he is totally doing, it’s made for him). None of that is confirmed but he has said those are the races he will be doing in several interviews.

Seems that every world star in cycling

will either be at Algarve or California during that time, it’s going to be some great racing. Imagine if Algarve had live streaming, then everyone could watch Algrave in the morning(for those of us living in the states) and then the ToC in the afternoon. That would be sooooooooooooo sweet.

so far, it's only Viasat broadcasting the race

with highlights here in Scandinavia….
CTV, if it works, will apparently air it live??

by Bruce Suomi on Jan 12, 2009 7:04 PM EST up reply actions

"telecast" link

is here … even SBS (Aus broadcaster) is only showing daily highlights except for Stage 6 which will be live for 2 hours. The link lists a number of Euro broadcasters also showing the highlights (B Sky Sports, Sport +, VIASAT, VRT Belgium = sporza I think) – except I think from past experience anything they might stream on the web is usually georestricted …

You can always check www.cyclingfans.com the day of the race. They usually have alternatives.

Cute graphic! But the scale is all off. That bicycle is way too big.

They are not actually riding across the entire continent of Australia.

Because it doesn’t look a thing like the official event logo.

I like the Astana philosophy of "If it ain't broke don't fix it."

why do teams feel the need to change their kits every year? by the time I ran recognize them by their sleeves and shoulder front they go and change them. Argh.

by ZoeRochelle on Jan 12, 2009 10:08 PM EST up reply actions

I know, just imagine if a team that won 76 times the year before

were dumb enough to drastically change their kits, how stupid would that be?
