Tour Down Under Stage 1 Live Thread

Tdu_medium Race starts today at 11:00 am Adelaide time which is 4:30pm pacific time in the US. (2 minutes from the time of this post.)

We have a live ticker from the people at Cycling News.Com here.

Streaming audio from ABC Adelaide here. It is not TDU discussion right now but hopefully they will start soon. They just said every 20 minutes hey will have updates plus local color commentary and interviews with spectators.

And the CyclingFans.Com Live Dashboard is here. And they are updating new sources on their Twitter feed here. Any new sources are usually posted there.

Hopefully Cyclegirl and Flatbagger will check in periodically. They are both at the race in person. Lucky dogs.

Yes, the time zone was off for today's stage

Easier to use this one than change it.

For the next stages, there will be live threads.

my guess is a DNF in Cancer Classic not a problem for TdU

as Sunday race was not officially part of TdU, it was just a pre-tour race – can anyone confirm this?

Rogers was just helping Columbia stay at front of race, then he pulled out – any more details anyone?

Posted this on another post but I'm curious to see how Stroetinga does today

CN ticker has him saying

"Today is going to be a longer race with some hills; I don’t know how I’ll sprint after a few hills. If it’s a sprint I’ll try to win it."

That’s what I’m wondering, how will he do in a stage that has some hills and is over 100km.

by Phil H. on Jan 19, 2009 7:52 PM EST reply actions

No problem

I don’t think this distance or the hills will be a problem for Wim St., and it’s not that hot today either. He’s says he’s going for it again, I’m picking him to do it. The Columbia train towing Greipel will probably spoil it though.

by sminer on Jan 19, 2009 7:58 PM EST up reply actions

He's a trackie and it's his first full year on the road

so there are questions of how he will do. He should be there in the peloton but does he have enough energy to contest the sprint up front. Today migt not be a prob but some other hillier stages could be.

For sure

You won’t be able to find him after Willunga Hill, kaboom.

by sminer on Jan 19, 2009 8:04 PM EST up reply actions

Oh yeah, he is not getting over Willunga up front

or not the second lap at least, unlike the guy who he will be leading out this year Ciolek, too bad he isn’t there, he would have a good chance to win the overall.

He also is quoted on CN as saying

Wim Stroetinga added: "It was the first race of the season on Sunday. I’d done the Rotterdam Six before then; Sunday was like a track race which was perfect. Today is different but sprinting is still the same."

he finished Rotterdam Six day at: five laps behind in 6th with Olaf Pollack (Ger)

CN talking about the worst kits

looks like it’s between Columbia, Katusha, and Astana. The fans have spoken and I still say Columbia trumps all.

From the cyclingnew live ticker:
11:29 CST
The news isn’t so good for Katusha’s team kit, nor Columbia’s for that matter, with fans telling they don’t like this year’s getups. Steve said: "It appears the contest for the ugliest team outfit has started…Columbia/High Road is just plain bad and is out in front…and Astana and Katusha are not much better. A shame such good riders getting around in bad kit. "

It isn’t only the PdC with a thumbs down on the Columbia kit.

Ben is quite the comic
13:32 CST
The riders are now on their way to the feed station on Yetti Road. With the heat out there today, I doubt they will be running into any Abominable Snowmen (although, I have been wrong before!).

13:38 CST
Columbia is leading the peloton so should they come across an Abominable Snowman, I’m backing Greipel to take it out. That guy is like a brick wall.

Only in cycling

Could a guy weighing 170 pounds qualify as a “brick wall.”

Heading to a chiro later this week. :-) Thanks.

Found out today he not only didn’t have a license but now there’s doubts on insurance. Thus, wine is good today. Letting my insurance deal with it.

Had one of those years ago when I was in college.

The kid who caused that one hydro planed and took 5 of us out. It was bad. I think 4 of the 5 cars were totaled. Of course that one had to be on a major expressway just before rush hour. Luckily I swear by seatbelts and all those bruises healed even though it took months. Ugh. My worst might’ve been last Christmas when I hit black ice and rolled my blazer. That was scary. I could not imagine if I had been going the speed limit. Roads were bad so I had already reduced to over 20 mphs less. I grew up in WI so snow is nothing to me but ice, that shit scares me.

Oh I hate driving on ice with a huge passion

so freaking nerve racking and you never if someone around you will be as cautious as they should.

Thus the case last week.

Kid plowed into me at a stop sign sending me way out into the middle of the intersection. It was icey but he had two other stop signs to know that before this one. No license so I guess I might’ve been asking a lot in hopes drivers were being careful. He shouldn’t have been there anyway.

Hey Nikki, the time difference is confusing me – i’m missing all the best conversations!! I need to get with it – I read your post about cracking open the wine at about 9am in the morning here so that’s what i meant by early!! ha ha, it was actually a very respectable wine time!!

I’ll track you down on the next live chat and we’ll hurl some light-hearted abuse at Dan!! (ahh we won’t be too mean if you’re reading this dan!!)

wow I did not know so few trees there

hey cyclegirl or flatbagger or anyone else downunder, is this photo typical of the area?

by peterfish on Jan 20, 2009 12:12 PM EST up reply actions

Adelaide is on a coastal plain....

….with suburbia taking up just about all of it. The hills have trees but once you go over the back of the hills it becomes a rain-shadow area and is also farmed so there ain’t many trees. The final sprint was at a place Called One Tree Hill yesterday….that should be a clue :-)
