Tour Down Under Stage 1 Live Thread
Race starts today at 11:00 am Adelaide time which is 4:30pm pacific time in the US. (2 minutes from the time of this post.)
We have a live ticker from the people at Cycling News.Com here.
Streaming audio from ABC Adelaide here. It is not TDU discussion right now but hopefully they will start soon. They just said every 20 minutes hey will have updates plus local color commentary and interviews with spectators.
And the CyclingFans.Com Live Dashboard is here. And they are updating new sources on their Twitter feed here. Any new sources are usually posted there.
Hopefully Cyclegirl and Flatbagger will check in periodically. They are both at the race in person. Lucky dogs.

Chris has posts scheduled
for the first few stages, but we can go ahead and use this one today.
Enjoy!
he's a little behind today...

Yes, the time zone was off for today's stage
Easier to use this one than change it.
For the next stages, there will be live threads.
about 3:45 more
they have 140km’s to do today

btw, what happened to rodgers yesterday and the DNF?
"Wizard's first rule. People are stupid. They will believe anything they want to be true or fear to be true." -- Terry Goodkind
my guess is a DNF in Cancer Classic not a problem for TdU
as Sunday race was not officially part of TdU, it was just a pre-tour race – can anyone confirm this?
Rogers was just helping Columbia stay at front of race, then he pulled out – any more details anyone?
It was
a mechanical problem with his bike, according to cyclingfever’s press representative at the race.

Posted this on another post but I'm curious to see how Stroetinga does today
CN ticker has him saying
"Today is going to be a longer race with some hills; I don’t know how I’ll sprint after a few hills. If it’s a sprint I’ll try to win it."
That’s what I’m wondering, how will he do in a stage that has some hills and is over 100km.
"If you go (with a break), you can either win or not win. If you don't go for it, you definitely won't win."
~ Jens Voigt
No problem
I don’t think this distance or the hills will be a problem for Wim St., and it’s not that hot today either. He’s says he’s going for it again, I’m picking him to do it. The Columbia train towing Greipel will probably spoil it though.
He's a trackie and it's his first full year on the road
so there are questions of how he will do. He should be there in the peloton but does he have enough energy to contest the sprint up front. Today migt not be a prob but some other hillier stages could be.
"If you go (with a break), you can either win or not win. If you don't go for it, you definitely won't win."
~ Jens Voigt
Oh yeah, he is not getting over Willunga up front
or not the second lap at least, unlike the guy who he will be leading out this year Ciolek, too bad he isn’t there, he would have a good chance to win the overall.
"If you go (with a break), you can either win or not win. If you don't go for it, you definitely won't win."
~ Jens Voigt
He also is quoted on CN as saying
Wim Stroetinga added: "It was the first race of the season on Sunday. I’d done the Rotterdam Six before then; Sunday was like a track race which was perfect. Today is different but sprinting is still the same."
he finished Rotterdam Six day at: five laps behind in 6th with Olaf Pollack (Ger)
CN talking about the worst kits
looks like it’s between Columbia, Katusha, and Astana. The fans have spoken and I still say Columbia trumps all.
"If you go (with a break), you can either win or not win. If you don't go for it, you definitely won't win."
~ Jens Voigt
But has there ever
really been a good looking cycling kit? This is the sport of itchey wool tights and terry-backed gloves meant to wipe off crusty dried drool. It’s like asking, “hey what’s the worst looking Sumo wrestling kit?!”

From the cyclingnew live ticker:
11:29 CST
The news isn’t so good for Katusha’s team kit, nor Columbia’s for that matter, with fans telling they don’t like this year’s getups. Steve said: "It appears the contest for the ugliest team outfit has started…Columbia/High Road is just plain bad and is out in front…and Astana and Katusha are not much better. A shame such good riders getting around in bad kit. "
It isn’t only the PdC with a thumbs down on the Columbia kit.
We have two attackers
Kaisen and Lafuente of Euskaltel are off, first attacks of the year!
"If you go (with a break), you can either win or not win. If you don't go for it, you definitely won't win."
~ Jens Voigt
first in TdU
we had a few attacks on Sunday also.
Phil how come when motorcycles took off today ahead of race after neutral start, no rider did a derny attack drafting behind them ?
Wrong form of cycling peterfish
if I had it my way all the camera men would be derny drivers but I don’t run things.

Cn says gap is now 1:45 after a mere 8km
clearly the peloton are not very motivated yet.
"If you go (with a break), you can either win or not win. If you don't go for it, you definitely won't win."
~ Jens Voigt
Gap is now 3:15
"If you go (with a break), you can either win or not win. If you don't go for it, you definitely won't win."
~ Jens Voigt
Cyclingnews compared Greipel's style to Kimi Raikkonen
had to look him up. He is a Formula 1 racer? Photo here. I can see the similarities.
I think they meant the demeanor
Kimi never says much and is always very calm and collective, both in the race and in the press.
"If you go (with a break), you can either win or not win. If you don't go for it, you definitely won't win."
~ Jens Voigt
Lafuente
is struggling with a blister under the ball of his foot but but he said he would start in stage 1
Anyone know if the 11 km neutral zone at the start
is included in the 140 race Kms ?
Almost always is – I guess my real question is:
is the 1st Sprint at 30km into the race today, now about 10km away / or 20km away?
Cn has them 14km in with 126 to go
so 16 more km
"If you go (with a break), you can either win or not win. If you don't go for it, you definitely won't win."

Seems like it isn't

Now were are Lance's updates?
"If you go (with a break), you can either win or not win. If you don't go for it, you definitely won't win."
~ Jens Voigt
He told Stuey in Sunday during race . . .
I would shake your hand but I don’t not want to take my hands off the bars !
Now I thought he could multi-task
but if he can’t even race at 45kph and twitter at the same time he is clearly less talented then I thought. :)
"If you go (with a break), you can either win or not win. If you don't go for it, you definitely won't win."

I thought he was a God
but if he’s only a mere human man than obviously he can’t multi-task
"If you go (with a break), you can either win or not win. If you don't go for it, you definitely won't win."
~ Jens Voigt
maybe we could get some of those non-talented
motorcycle drivers to Twitter as their jobs are so easy anyways.
Bummer
For those who have asked, we’ve hit a technical problem today which means we won’t be displaying images during the live coverage.
Cyclingnew live ticker
are they joking?
or really they were planning to give us images during race, that is something new, no?
I think it is serious and yes it is new. They added:
With that said we do have the equipment with us and will be doing this on the remaining stages.
so looks like it is serious if they get it working. That’d be cool.
hey I wonder if instead of race radios . . .
all the directors will soon simply be Twittering their riders !
Will Walker goes on the attack
and seeing he’s only 6 minutes behind the leaders this makes perfect sense(sarcasm).
"If you go (with a break), you can either win or not win. If you don't go for it, you definitely won't win."
~ Jens Voigt
Well, Walker is now only 4.55 back
the pack is 6.25 back, so he’s gaining ground
"If you go (with a break), you can either win or not win. If you don't go for it, you definitely won't win."
~ Jens Voigt
With four of them, they should have a better chance of catching the leaders.
Google is my domestique.
I wonder is he going for Sprint prime points?
How many places do they get points for at Sprint?
Or is he / and is he also trying to get in a break to stay away to finish?
Split in the pack
this is getting very interesting
"If you go (with a break), you can either win or not win. If you don't go for it, you definitely won't win."
~ Jens Voigt
And now they are all back together
"If you go (with a break), you can either win or not win. If you don't go for it, you definitely won't win."

Not sure if it was a typo
the author is using a fair bit of sarcasm in his updates.

Weirdest news: some people have written in to say they like Columbia's kit?

so there are 20 others who have enough time to write in.

yes I always do that
or click latest – I just did it again (refreshed) it still does not show sprint winners – I am going to close it and open a new one.
Here:
12:19 CST 30.3/109.7 to go
Olivier Kaisen (Silence-Lotto) has taken the first sprint win over Andoni Lafuente (Euskaltel-Euskadi) at Main Street in One Tree Hill. William Walker (Fuji-Servetto) is still ahead of the peloton and so should take third spot.
Peloton at 6.40, Walker stalled at 4.55
but he did get third in the first sprint

Bush Fire Updates
yeah it sounds a lot like our local SoCal news radio….except that here in SoCal they interrupt the fire news to tell you who had plastic surgery today and that fish are now called sea kittens. Otherwise, sounds familiar!

Heh, cracking me up with that.

Don't know.
I think I’m wrong about the points, too—there’s more than one place to pick up KOM points today, and what I gave was the total awarded on the first stage last year. Sorry.

Anyone outside of the US going to ge the last hour live on CyclingTV?
We’d love for some better updates here.
I think what ctv meant with the last hour of the race live thing
was that they are showing the final hour of the entire race live, so the last hour of stage 6, which we are getting on Versus.

Had one of those years ago when I was in college.
The kid who caused that one hydro planed and took 5 of us out. It was bad. I think 4 of the 5 cars were totaled. Of course that one had to be on a major expressway just before rush hour. Luckily I swear by seatbelts and all those bruises healed even though it took months. Ugh. My worst might’ve been last Christmas when I hit black ice and rolled my blazer. That was scary. I could not imagine if I had been going the speed limit. Roads were bad so I had already reduced to over 20 mphs less. I grew up in WI so snow is nothing to me but ice, that shit scares me.
"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."

Thus the case last week.
Kid plowed into me at a stop sign sending me way out into the middle of the intersection. It was icey but he had two other stop signs to know that before this one. No license so I guess I might’ve been asking a lot in hopes drivers were being careful. He shouldn’t have been there anyway.

wow I did not know so few trees there
hey cyclegirl or flatbagger or anyone else downunder, is this photo typical of the area?
Adelaide is on a coastal plain....
….with suburbia taking up just about all of it. The hills have trees but once you go over the back of the hills it becomes a rain-shadow area and is also farmed so there ain’t many trees. The final sprint was at a place Called One Tree Hill yesterday….that should be a clue :-)

I believe he meant the media
I personally had no offense to what he said, and I’m quick to get angered when someone insults my country.

Haven't noticed much about the comment
of course I live in Colorado so I don’t know how people in Germany are reacting to it, but I haven’t read anything about it in the German sports sites.

Greipel will be wearing the leaders jersey tomorrow
and if he loses it tomorrow he should still have the sprint jersey, in either way he should be out of the Columbia kit for a few days.

That's going to be a huge motivating factor for them this year
“What the hell can I win to get a different jersey”
Very big
another reason why Rogers and Hansen blowing the Aussie road race was such a bummer for them.

it’s so fun that live threads are back! I only made to about 60-ish to go and then was totally zonked. (stupid, lingering cold!) Tonight I need to take a 6 pm nap… :)
Woah!
what happened to the Cuban missile? Finishing over 20 minutes down on ones first Protour stage is not a great sign.
it's difficult
to try and watch a tape of the event and read through an earlier live thread trying to read as things progress on the tape ….. :)
