For new fans: does PdC hate Lance Armstrong?
This is a historical explanation of the term "HWMNBN," a term used elsewhere to refer to the worst dark wizard of all time, and commonly used here to refer to Mr. Lance Armstrong.
It strikes me that people stumbling in a year or more after the coining of "HWMNBN" must assume that we're a bunch of folks who all equate Lance with Voldemort. Not so. A brief history of the coining of the term:
There were periodic "if Lance were still here, he'd kick [fill in the blank's] butt" threads. They tended to be short on actual analysis, but, eh, it's a free world. More irritatingly, however, people were periodically and perennially debating ages old Lance doping scandals after the man was retired. There was (duh) never anything new to be said, because there was (duh) NO new evidence and NO new samples and precious few new leaks or rumors. The only thing that varied was the level of hostility, ranging from intermediate to painful. Even the wording had practically become standardized, though the people bothering to type in the words seemed to change from time to time. It got very tiresome. It clogged up fanpost space. It hijacked substantive threads. It deepened frowns and worry lines, triggered global warming, problem drinking, geopolitical upheaval (OK, I exaggerate), and led exactly nowhere.
So Chris banned the subject. And by implication, posts about Lance that were likely to trigger that type of response. As he has pointed out previously, the ban was actually only "HWBCC1999-2005MNBD" i.e. "He whose blood cell count 1999-2005 must not be debated." And it was actually explicitly conditional on Lance being an ex-racer. Not so draconian, right?
But Chris had never before instituted a blanket ban on any subject. It didn't take long for people to notice the Omerta quality of the ban, and the Voldemort-esque absoluteness of it. Verbally-playful people that we are, the HWMNBN label, and a dozen variants, sprung into being. And in a case of mass typographical Tourette's, once we'd started blurting the thing out, it felt so good, we couldn't stop. For the record, PdC does not--organizationally or by vote or consensus of the membership--hate Lance. Some hate him, some love him, some can take him or leave him. But we do, organizationally, hate repetitive threads, unless they take off from "phone's ringing" or a picture of HWMABP or otherwise make us smile or laugh or think deep thoughts.
Many of us continue to type "HWMNBN" a a in-joke. It is also a reminder to be polite to your fellow PdC members. It also prevents PdC from showing up in the top 5 google results for every person who types in "Lance Armstrong" 'cause they want to get a yellow bit of rubber for their arm. (That's good for us, for them, and for the cause of internet civility.)
If you're looking for a place to fight Lance Armstrong's battles for him, you're going to find a lot more windmills than giants here. Pick an old race thread from the archives, and follow it. Check out some of the Gavia Gossip. Or a team analysis, a race preview, a young rider bio. If you read this before the deadline, PLEASE enter the VDS competition even if you're picking names more or less at random--it's free, and its fun. Put Lance Armstrong on your VDS team, then also pick 24 other riders, and cheer them all on, in whatever races they're racing in. It's FINE if you love Lance. Come love, and learn, his sport.

I get PdC (well, sbnation.com) on the fourth page of Google search results for the term “HWMNBN”. Now look what we’ve done! :P

I am a Lance fan-boy, and also hate repetitive threads.
I also think that many/most of the regulars here value the civilized nature of debate at PdC versus some other more-heated “forums”. Long may it last.

LOL
Funny trip through Podium Cafe history right there.
I believe I may have been responsible for the First Use of HWMNBN, specifically in the context of the “ban” on Lance flamewarage. Eh, I like me some word play. All in good fun. With the Return, the joke doesn’t make much sense anymore, really. Though certainly, the ban on silly flamewarz is totally alive and well.
Don't feel bad.
I played with that one at lunch and never figured it out. I was like, how does Benna fit into this?

Huge Thank you to Mark as this is his money making photo. (I am so buying you a beer in Cali – you’re coming right?)

Yes, I think that's him,
but we may need another piccie for comparison….

Is that sufficient?
For the record, I don't hate Lance.
I’ve been following him since his last days at Subaru-Montgomery, the year before he turned pro with Motorola. I planned several long weekend road trips to see him and the Motorola boys race. I saw him win $1,000,000 in the Philly week triple crown in ‘93. I cheered when he paraded the Rainbow jersey around Pittsburgh in ’94 (Thrift Drug Classic). I even caught a few stages of the Tour du Pont in ’95 & ’96, he absolutely ripped the legs off the field on the stage that finished in Richmond.
I yelled at him in Atlanta, when he attacked with 4 laps to go (too early) and I was deeply saddened and scared for him when I watched the news conference on October 2 of ’96 announcing his cancer diagnosis. I still hold a grudge against Cofidis for cutting him for the weird insurance situation during that period. I read It’s Not About The Bike cover to cover without putting it down. I wouldn’t say I was inspired, but he definitely left an impression on me.
IIRC, pre-cancer, the media kinda portrayed him as a “brash, young talent” who was too cocky (probably cuz he’s from Texas), but I always defended him to my buddies.
For me, the fairy tale started to unwind when he got divorced. I know, perhaps I’m old-fashioned, naive or whatever, or maybe it was because I was now married, but that kind of left it bad for me. Then you pile all the Hollywood starlets and whatnot, and he kinda turned into a nipple-head. All the accusations and stuff happened after that and I lost interest in defending him.
Well that settles it... Wellsie loves cancer.
Why Wellsie? Why do you love cancer?

now, see, that part I can almost understand...
a no-holds-barred, “live for today / no convention left unquestioned” attitude. His taste, no… but returning to work, as it were? That part is sort of growing on me.
Eh, color me ambivalent.
(And sorry that Greipel crashed out of the TdU. He seems to be a very sweet & hard working dude.)
P.S. anatomy lesson request: can a nipple-head also be an ass-hat, or are they mutually exclusive, like putting your elbow in your ear?
Asshat: A defintion...

but...but...
where’s his hat? I don’t get it?

I sort of agree with you there
My view on his earlier Tour wins was that any kudos he got for not having one off day all those years was offset by that exclusive contract with the guy who everyone else thought of as the best doping doctor around. But now I wonder if he genuinely wants to test a clean himself against a clean everybody else, and I really am intrigued. It just make take a while for me to switch off that reflex snark response I’ve developed over the years.

honestly
i don’t have anything against Armstrong. But i was seeing the photos of AFP photos from stage3 (TDU) in CN, and seems that don’t exist anymore rider that LA!!! Only photos with him!!!
http://cyclingnews.com/photos/2009/jan09/TDU09/?id=/photos/2009/jan09/TDU09/TDU093/Hkg2034392
i just pass 7,,8, and he is the apeears in all, in the center. I think is a little disrespect for others riders…
But...but...there have been three stage winners in this race. And there's a race leader.
The link makes it clear that it’s supposed to be about TDU09. If the link promised to be, say, RetLanceTDU, then that comment would make sense. It’s legitimate to do a Lance Returns story. But for the other cyclists to get LESS coverage than they did a year ago, that’s a bit off. And I think that’s the right yardstick: not “does Lance get lots of extra PR” (not harmful) but “does everyone else get way less than they did at the same race last year” (yes, that’s harmful and insulting).
First post
I’ve been floating for quite a few months now and, just so as you know, I haven’t picked up on any institutional Lance hating. Just lots of lively, fun and balanced debate. I’m fairly ambivalent to all the Lance tooing and froing really, as most of my opinion is formed by the media, which is not always the most genuine of sources. Plus I stopped following cycling pretty much the exact time that Lance was doing his thang. (I’m back safely in the fold since 2006 you’ll be glad to know)
Anyhow, really looking forward to the 2009 season and have my VDS team being honed down as we speak!
Very much enjoy PdC! Ta.
Hope you join in and have a good time with us.
Welcome to the fun!

Would be cool if you'd tell us who you liked best in the "pre-Lance" days...depending how far back you go...
Heck, go for the gusto, pick a decade (or a 5 year span), make a list of your favorites from that era (and what you liked most about them) and run it up the flag as a fanpost. Sounds like a great way to bridge the pre-season lull.
Well I don't hate Lance
Just the media’s coverage of him.
I was chasing his photo and was in awe when i met him.. Looking forward to seeing him at Flanders.
We don't stop playing because we grow old, we grow old because we stop playing.

I think Lance has got too much tesosterone and one too many nuts to ever be a really good cyclist!
….but that’s just my personal view on the subject.
errrr....am i supposed to sign this??
