Si, already got my plane ticket

I fly out May 7, and I plan to be in Venice in time for the team time trial.

I bet you're glad you got the pass last year

I’m sure they will look a lot more carefully at first timers this time.

by Monty. on Jan 28, 2009 11:45 AM EST up reply actions

definitely!

Even with an in from last year, I was a bit worried that with HWMNBN showing up, they might give our spot in the press room to someone from People magazine or something. It looks like we’re all set, though.

by Susie Hartigan on Jan 28, 2009 11:48 AM EST up reply actions

Yay, proper cycling news

But mysteriously, no room for CSF Navigare. I’m glad Visconti got a place, too.

by Monty. on Jan 28, 2009 11:35 AM EST reply actions

Nice to see ISD in there

I was wondering if they would make the cut. With FDJ and Cofidis staying home, that opened up some space.

Interesting to see if CSF makes it in the next round.

Yeah

that’s pretty big. No Giro, you’re basically killing that team.

actually, they got rid of much of the orange in this year’s kit. it’s much more ristretto.

CSF isn't in for the same reasons Fuji isn't

they had a rider on the team last year that disgraced cycling.. Them re-hiring Sella doesn’t help either.

Yeah I think this is pretty clear.

RCS is going the way that ASO went last year on this. It may be a very long summer for Fuji.

by Ed K on Jan 28, 2009 8:57 PM EST up reply actions

That just reminds me...

I was really starting to like Saunier Duval as a team that would field almost all climbers, sort of like Euskaltel. You know, it was just another different and interesting factor in the races. The road would turn up, and then you would see them for the first time. I was starting to like Ricco, because he talked trash and backed it up. I even liked Piepoli, because he seemed like the selfless hero when he gifted mountain stage wins to Simoni and Ricco. Now, the new sponsor pays for their indiscretions…

'A' rider?

cough, cough, splutter. My gut feeling is that if they ever get round to retesting those Giro samples then they might just possibly find one who doesn’t.

by Monty. on Jan 29, 2009 10:25 AM EST up reply actions

Well I was just limiting the riders

obviously both teams had more than one and CSF probably had about 8 at the Giro, but each team had ‘A’ star rider who disgraced cycling.

Garzelli will be happy.

There was just an interview in the Italian press with Garzelli, who said the Giro and Liége were his main goals for the season. Nice to see him back at the Giro.

Xacobeo should be a fun team to watch too. Does this mean I have to learn to spell it?

Interesting to see if CSF gets a late invite, or whether the RCS decides that the wiff of scandal is too heavy after last year’s high jinx.

complicated, yes

but simoni rides for them, so that sort of makes up for it. or, makes things still more complicated. he’s been blabbing in the press this week about the Armstrong comeback. i so heart it when simoni starts blabbing. it’s truly one of the most beautiful things in cycling.

except for a few others i could mention.

It truly is a wonder to behold.

Do tell us what he’s been blabbing when you write your next gossip. I need a giggle. But most beautiful thing in cycling? No, that honour goes to…..a certain sprinter from Tuscany. If someone wants to post a picture to prove it I shan’t complain.

Those eyelashes must be a liability. I mean, my sporty sunglasses don’t allow enough room for my lashes, let alone his. He must have to have customised eyewear!

You do have to wonder where he stashes those things, the eyelashes, I mean. Probably has to clean his sunglasses a great deal.

interesting question

They have been working mightily hard in the press to show that they’ve distanced themselves from Gianetti – oh, he only works with the team part of the time, he’s only doing administrative work, blah blah. So, I think it’s possible they might be able to sweet talk their way in.

Eh, overdue for a gossip column. maybe today.

by Jen See on Jan 28, 2009 12:00 PM EST up reply actions

also, amore&vita

I know Fanini would desperately like a trip to the Giro.

by Jen See on Jan 28, 2009 12:01 PM EST up reply actions

They hurt themselves by becoming American based me thinks

and also their roster isn’t that impressive. Talking about amore here. Fuji hurt themselves by liking too much CERA.

by Phil H. on Jan 28, 2009 5:11 PM EST up reply actions

Does that matter so much in Italy

Most of their domestic teams seem to be flying a flag of convenience. Diquiquiqui-PVC are Venezuelan, but the only connection any of the team has with South American is Simoni’s confectioner auntie, yet that doesn’t seem to harm them. And how many of LPR have ever even looked at a pint of Guinness.

Garzelli

Yes, I’m pleased to see Acqua&Sapone on the list. Their exclusion last year was hard to understand, after Garzelli’s two stage wins in 2007.

Awesome line up, I'm so happy all 20 PT teams aren't required to ride

I counted 14 PT teams and the other 6 will all have their best squads ready to go. Garzelli for Acqua, Sastre and maybe even Hushovd for Cervelo. Gatto and Visconti for ISD, Di Luca and Petacchi for LPR, Rebellin and Gibo for SERRAMENTI PVC, and Mozquerra for XACOBEO . This will make for much greater racing than had all 20 PT teams been invited. Although it looks like the Italian champ wont get in.

Mikhail Khalilov

won both the Coppa Sabatini and the Memorial Cimurri, in the week leading up to the Giro di Lombardia. Shamefully neither race counted for VDS points, so he finished the year as he started.

ooh, you *are* good, aren't you

is that really what they did?

Okay, lol, now that i’ve checked the googler, and it’s clear they weren’t the only one. indeed, they were far more subtle than most who put armstrong right there in the headline.

sheesh, i’m so naïve. i so should have rewritten our headline to match the cool kids and relate it to armstrong. what was i thinking?

by Jen See on Jan 28, 2009 5:20 PM EST up reply actions

It also strikes me as odd that VeloNews is taking their cycling story – a story where they would have a direct press release from the RCS – from the AP wire. Like, aren’t you guys supposed to know about cycling?

If Cadel comes than I don't think he will go for the win

so personally I don’t want him to come if that’s the case, one comes to the century Giro to win not to train, now Dekker I can see, he won’t be leader at the Tour so why not. Also to comment on one of your above comments about Sastre not riding to win, I would have to disagree. The man himself has said that he is coming to win and he wants to be in his best shape at the Giro. Carlos is an honorable man and I will take him at his word.

I'd guess not Flaminia

for pretty much the same reason they included that long Armstrong-friendly TT. RCS can be pretty petty when they feel like it. Remember how last year they chose to invite Meche-Silver Cross (???) when they still had a free spot in the week before MSR, rather than Garzelli’s team.
