One suggestion

Maybe you could add Day 2 to the thread title? If it’s anything like yesterday, one thread ain’t going to do it for the next five days.

To clarify, the elites start at 1:15 EST today (the UIV Talent Cup at 12:15 is a U23 madison). But if people are really bored, the live cam is going already, so you can watch people walk around holding papers and plugging in cords. And a couple of guys slowly riding around the track.

Today’s schedule here.

Time conversion thingy here.

lol

well, i figured we’d need more than one. just not quite awake enough to come up with a good title :-P

I’ll put the schedule thingy in too. Yay!

Instead of adding day 2, you should add party night live!

because today is party night in Rotterdam. It will be a blast and we will be standing a lot.

You know it!

I’m warming up my knees already. But I vote we keep Day 2 in there somewhere, in case we ever need to find the thread again.

Right now we can watch them all drink coffee.

Which reminds me, I need a refill. Drank what was left after spilling some on the keyboard earlier. :-)

Good Morning Phil. :-) Did you rest your legs last night? tee hee.

Good morning to majope and gavia too! I’ve been at work for hours so I am ready for some good distractions.

I put this in the other thread, apologizing to Colby.

But it was a fun read. And it explains the derny race a little bit. I still don’t know that I get it as the moto cars confuse me, do they just pace and how do they not just force the pace of the rider up to win? I’m going to have to go read up.

Here again is the link to Daniel Holloway’s site. He’s got some good pics and the earlier posts help give a feel for what a circus and how huge these things are over there. I don’t think we have anything here (meaning in the US) to compare it to these days.

And by moto cars, I so mean moto's. The bikes. Not cars.

I am pretty sure for the huge 6 days though that they guys are brought out in cars. Big openings but I don’t recall seeing any of that type of thing here yesterday.

Didn't cycling.tv stream this last year?

I bumped into Brian Smith at a stage start in the Tour Of Britain. He’s even more miserable in the flesh

You don't like Brian?

I miss B&A during the races. It’s been a long while since I’ve tuned in and watched on demand stuff on ctv. Need to figure out if I’m renewing or not this year. So many races had alternate links yet some key ones didn’t.

Brian had a really great call of the race. I think on and off the bike he has his ‘race face’ on, at least as soon as he sees a race start. The Tour Of Britain was a weird sight. I was at the start in Darlington, a post industrial town in the North East, very much a football town. You wander around of there is DI Luca stood in the market square looking clueless as to ‘how did it come to this’.I swear Wiggins looked badly hung over.

I make no claims about being right here

that’s just the impression I got last night and tonight. Actually I don’t even know if they are following the same rules tonight as they were last night. Did 50 miles and that was a bit much in the conditions. There is still ice in the gutters of the road, and it was not thawing at all, so definitely below freezing. This is from the article I linked above that Colby wrote... hope it helps.

The Dean Derny
Day five we had one of the most bizarre derny races on record. The announcer and every rider I spoke to said that they had never seen anything like it. The derny races in Zurich are split between the riders. The first athlete does about 35 laps, then the riders execute a madison exchange and the second rider finishes the race. When Holloway threw me in, my driver took off and we lapped the field with about 15 laps left in the event.

I was enjoying the thought of getting the flowers when suddenly the derny died with 7 laps to go! I did not know what to do, but the crowd started yelling for me to just "go!" as the field was passing me. Holloway came back in the race with two to go for an exchange, just in time for us to keep from loosing our lap and still win the race. The fans were on their feet! It was a great show for the crowd and everyone talked about it for the rest of the night.

The other ones

who aren’t doing the derny tonight

Schep is in this group and I know we watched him earlier.

I think

that one rider from each pair does the elimination and the other does teh derny. But then they do the derny 6 at a time. I guess it would get a little crowded with a dozen of tehm out there

by Monty. on Jan 3, 2009 5:00 PM EST up reply actions

so this would be the elimination?

last guy out…when? When the bell rings?

by JFS_PGH on Jan 3, 2009 4:52 PM EST reply actions

Bell marks the lap they get pulled for being last.

There's another derny after this elimination race

and then comes the show!

Sweetness! I am so trying to stick it out until the show.

Then I hope to leave this place.

You can't miss the show on party night

for the moment though you should be standing

I just ran four miles.

I may stand up for every other champion.

Derney are the little mopeds with the lunchbox looking things on the front

riders draft on them. They have to race against each other while not dropping their bike rider.

by JFS_PGH on Jan 3, 2009 4:55 PM EST up reply actions

because drafting is part of it, girth in the derney rider is presumably a GOOD THING

either that, or they are all starved domestiques who plumped up when they quit pedaling and started motoring.

by JFS_PGH on Jan 3, 2009 4:57 PM EST up reply actions

excellent point!

I never thought of it that way. The meatier the driver, the easier the cycling.

by PopUp Rolen on Jan 3, 2009 5:00 PM EST up reply actions

The great men themselves, the derny drivers

but have no fear as they will appear again very shortly

What the hell...

that was a rider with no moto.

"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."

by nikki on Jan 3, 2009 4:59 PM EST reply actions

Yes, most confusing.

What on earth’s going on full stop? How does this work?

by Albertina on Jan 3, 2009 5:00 PM EST up reply actions

So, do the riders and moto's have to stay within a specific distance?

Or do the drivers just push it until they see the rider start to drift back and then they slow it down to keep them together? Confusing. But no fear, it is Phil and my goal to become the best. We will get this down in no time.

I still think the riders and drivers yell at each other.

Thus, no music would make a little sense.

On the original video link, there is a side box that shows up

reflecting results of each race and during the madison it is updated with lap info.

found this
For most derny races, the cyclist drafts off the derny for the duration of the event. In some events, the derny is used to bring the bicycle up to speed, at which point the derny pulls off and the cyclist continues the race without a motorized pacer.

In Major Taylor's day, the early derneys had two people

One to steer, the other to handle the steam engine and stop it from exploding. And derney accidents loom large in the history of riders killed on the track, even in the more modern era. Deceptively easy-looking. They’re fine tuning the distance with the pedaling, I think. More responsive than the engine.

This shit has to be dangerous right.

Track bikes don’t have brakes, right? Or am I mistaken.

He started out strong early in the night.

Still not horrible if this is not your thing and your trying it out. It’s not like he’s 30 laps down with no points. I give the kid kuddo’s for trying it out.
