Yay!

Almost time to start standing up. Here’s today’s schedule in English, if anybody wants it.

First hour is youngsters’ madison and women’s points race—elites begin at 19:15 local/1:15 EST.

Questions...

I have “a friend” to ask some questions to. Let me know which ones we have that we need to ask and I will make the call. I’ve already got the “what the heck is the derny race about” question out there.

lol

I think you need to convince your “friend” to log in and join the party :-)

I’m off for a while, but I’ll check in lates!

Yo homies, I'm here and I'm ready to stand again

unfortunately I have to leave a few hours before the finish, and I’ll have to miss the show :( At least there is one more show tomorrow I can enjoy.

Hi gang!

I’m here today, but may not comment much.
It’s really hard to get back to real work after the holidays and this isn’t helping one bit! ;-)

Poor boy isn't used to those madison exchanges
The first tests the fragile Dekker had the feeling that his arm was ripped off. *

I was going to stick around for the thread, but now I have an overwhelming urge to fly to Rotterdam with some cookies.

*From the Google translation of this. Then again, Translate being what it is, the original could say that he rather likes marmots. After all, it also contains such gems as “His marriage to the Rabo team ran last summer with a hard slap on the cliffs, but the new dress is it like a glove.” But one gets the gist. At least sort of.

You so take care of us and then I post it again. It’s this damn work interference thing. :-)

Or it would if I would actually turn off the damn racing and get back to it.

They're used to different languages over here

(it’s awesome during the Giro when ctv cuts out and I switch to another link). So that doesn’t get them too often. Hearing football music though has them wondering whats up. Can’t wait for them to hear Stand Up. The announcer with the low volume just sounds like an stadium announcer with some echo. So they can’t tell very well it’s not english. (This was all so much easier Friday/Saturday when they were all gone.)

Update notes on the Derny.

I was on the phone during the last couple events and think I got some good info for us.
The derny is hard as hell and gut wrenching is what I got told. It’s all about the derny driver. And yes, the bigger they are, the better. They are breaking the wind for the riders behind them so the bigger they are, the better the draft. The riders and drivers are assigned before the event so it’s no surprise and not usually random. The drivers want to win, as they specialize in this. The riders have to stay with the derny. If they lose contact, they lose the draft they were working with and are basically screwed with getting back on at speeds. Just like top cyclists, there is prestige with being a top well known Derney driver.

The drivers and riders do talk to each other. That’s the funny ass cup thingys we see on the drivers ears. They’re like backwards cups so they can hear the rider behind him. The rider usually will yell up/down, go go, type stuff. The dangerous parts come in when they are more than say 2 abreast on the turns. More so than fume issues (which at least back in the day, weren’t bad), the riders have to worry about things like blown tires. Remember, no brakes for the riders, so if some type of mechanical happens, holy shit, watch out. Because of the drafting of the derny drivers, the riders tend to be going faster than say if they were sprinting on their own.

Object is to win with the Derney driver. The riders are pretty much part of the show but need to keep contact. I didn’t completely ask if there were penalities or such but it is truly harder on the rider if he loses contact with the derny as the draft is gone.

It’s a serious race and part of the show and hard as hell from the speeds and danger of it. Hope this helps.

He needs to treasure this as his arse

Actually with the 6 days

it’s the same 26 riders for all 6 days split up on the events. Sprint, madison, etc. Maybe not all in the same race as they split up but it’s the same group for sure all day for the whole event.
