Rotterdam Six Day: Day 4 Live Thread #2

The Rotterdam Six Day continues today.

Watch the live video. Festivites begin at 12.10 EST. Check out the full schedule of tonight's events.

Enjoy!

And of course that was not enough words. Where is Gavia?!?

Today has had some fun, we got to watch Dekker win a race! We found out that Stam and Stam C in the derny race are father and son. We got an update on the derney race from a friend who used to ride these professionally back in the day. Good times and great information today.

you are right on the rider count. I didn’t take into account 13 teams for the Madison. I just thought I read that it was 26 riders in total for the events. So maybe 32 or so?

are the 13 teams who do the madison, derny, elimination, etc.

I pulled this from this link someone else linked earlier.

However, the “King of Six Days” beyond doubt is Belgian Patrick Sercu: with 88 victories to his account, he dominated the sport in the 70s, sometimes pairing with road legend Eddy Merckx, and continues to organise and direct a lot of European Six Days like Munich, Ghent, Bremen and Amsterdam. Second on the absolute victories ranking is Australian Danny Clarke with 74 wins, achieved mainly in the 80s and early 90s.

The most successful couple is the current Swiss pair Bruno Risi and Kurt Betschart, who have already topped every other pair in history with 34 overall victories. Other contemporary stars include the Italian Madison specialists Marco Villa and Silvio Martinello with 22 and 28 victories so far respectively; some say that if they had teamed up more often, they would have cracked Risi and Betschart’s record.

Aussie-Belgian duo, Scott McGrory and Matthew Gilmore, have nine victories to their credit since 2000, while Alexander Aeschbach and Franco Marvulli, yet another Swiss duo, appear to be the next big thing on the Six Day circuit. But there are many riders to discover, like the Dutch Robert Slippens and Danny Stam, also on the rise, and German pair Andreas Kappes and Andreas Beikirch.

I heart this event.

Try using a media player for the video

I’m using VLC but even windows media player should do. Just tell it to go to http://media002.is.nl/ahoy You lose the side bar but can keep the video on top.

I didn’t realize we had to be able to play the sax too. I was band in high school but brass, not woodwinds. Damn.

According to the OED

Scratch refers to “a line or mark drawn as an indication of a boundary or starting-point”—so I’m imagining originally scratched on the ground.

Google is my domestique.

by majope on Jan 5, 2009 5:47 PM EST up reply actions

LOL. It's a pretty good dictionary.

Feel free to continue to look, but I think you’ll come up with the same explanation. Scratch races aren’t unique to cycling, and the OED definition is specifically for sporting events. Everybody starts on the same footing, from the same place. From the line scratched in the sand.

Google is my domestique.

Head over to the "just checking" thread for some fun.

We try not to load the live threads with pics unless they are shots of the current race or really relevant. Of course from time to time we do toss that logic out.

Well I only had to read 240 comments

at least they were short. Oh, and it is a bit of a miracle that none of you ladies posted a Bennati pic when peterfish had no idea who he was.

You're so funny. Like any pic you have could stop us from posting. LOL!

But, on a note, in general (noted it a few places here) we try to keep live threads to the racing at hand. Especially during the classics as the pics tend to slow the updating at times. So a bennalanche during a live thread might be bad. BUT… this thread is done so bring it on!
