13 days until the Tour Down Under...

This has been fun, but I do hanker for some road action.

Google is my domestique.

Yay!

We shall have to remind ourselves of that fact when we suffer inevitable 6 day withdrawal ;-)

hi guys :-)

I can’t believe I’ve sat through this for 6 days now.

I found an email from a ways back that got buried in work. Oops.

Giovanni Pettenella

supposedly 63 minutes at the ’64 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Trying to find confirmation…

Google is my domestique.

by majope on Jan 7, 2009 1:00 PM EST up reply actions

Well that blows the 15 minutes I said.

Maybe my friend said he remembered a 15 minute one. Crap. I’m a great listener but totally suck and retelling stuff.

"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."

by nikki on Jan 7, 2009 1:02 PM EST up reply actions

That time seems very unlikely

another source says it was 21 minutes 57 seconds.

Google is my domestique.

by majope on Jan 7, 2009 1:03 PM EST up reply actions

Okay

now I’ve got one that says Pettenella did do a 63-minute track stand, but it was at Varese in 1968. So maybe both are correct.

Google is my domestique.

by majope on Jan 7, 2009 1:06 PM EST up reply actions

I'll try and check in with my friend and ask him.

That’s his time frame so he’d recall something I’m sure.

Found an article

with pictures, no less. It’s in Italian, but translates quite coherently via Google. Varese, 1968: Giovanni Pettenella and Sergio Bianchetto remain motionless for 63 minutes, “two lakes of sweat” under their bikes, until finally Bianchetto staggers and crashes out.

Google is my domestique.

by majope on Jan 7, 2009 1:18 PM EST up reply actions

Great find. Thanks!!!

63 minutes?

That’s crazy talk. Awesome story :-)

by Jen See on Jan 7, 2009 1:38 PM EST up reply actions

afterall in UCI events, such as the worlds and world cups they put a 30 second limit on trackstands

to stop them being too long.
The UCI official walks up to the riders with a stop clock then blows a whistle when they have to start moving again.

by doddy13 on Jan 7, 2009 12:57 PM EST reply actions

I knew there was a strict limit set but I wasn't sure what it was.

For some reason I had 2 minutes in my head with a restart happening if they went to the 2 minute mark. I thought the official shot the gun to tell them the race is going to restart. Maybe that was prior to the reduction to 30 seconds. In events like olympics and such you need a schedule of somesort and I’d imagine trackstanding could blow that out of the water.

HANDS UP and . . . hey nikki and all, a question?

not sure if this is the place, but I am a newbie and have been recently delurked so here goes . . . before the days racing gets heated up, can I network here with you and ask all of you if anyone knows of any / or where i can find a job doing online cycling website editing, updating, managing etc? if this is not the place you could click on peterfish and send me an eml if you like please.

by peterfish on Jan 7, 2009 1:15 PM EST reply actions

Try dropping a note over in the fanposts area.

There are a LOT of people here who see things many of us miss and someone might be able to head you in the right direction. :-) You’d probably get better feed back there than here in a 6-day live thread. Just a thought. I don’t think Chris would mind you posting the question either. I thought VeloNews posted a job for someone to write up mechanical bikey stuff.

not to mention they are going to use the exact velodrome

you see this velodrome used for the Rotterdam is only tempory, once it’s over it’ll be taken down and put in the next place whoever wants to use it

Ok thanx..

by Frinking on Jan 7, 2009 1:40 PM EST up reply actions

yeah, you notice how each event have different sponsors

most noticable in the Sprint Cup how hoy is sponsored by Eneco for one event, but different companies for a different event.
Whereas his track trade team for UCI events is SkyHD+

by doddy13 on Jan 7, 2009 1:41 PM EST up reply actions

2 sixdaagse?

The Madison partners have been the same for the whole 6 day event. Many of them, when they have a solid rythem down will ride together often (thus some of the records they set). I think others depends on schedules, maybe? Not really the same but like our guys here in the states, have all rotated with each other depending on who’s going to what event and what else is going on. Meatball and Huff then maybe Huff and Lea. Holloway and Pearce were invited to a couple 6days last month and I’d imagine that guys like Meatball and especially Brad would’ve said no had they been asked to get some down time. They’re sponsored (I think) to attend some events so one might get a call and then sets up a partner to go with or maybe if they are set team, they always go together. Be a great question. I can ask it.

"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."

by nikki on Jan 7, 2009 1:42 PM EST up reply actions

Hey if Lampater and Marvulli

gain a lap on everyone today, they could win this from B and B right?
I think Schep and Risi groups would need at least two laps (each lap roughly translates to 100 points right?).

by nikki on Jan 7, 2009 1:47 PM EST up reply actions

all they need is to get a lap, it's very close. Just people need laps whilst their competitors can't get the lap.

Me thinks there will be some very good racing tonight with people going to get the lap they need. Good job the madison is last.
Oh then fireworks as the big podium will be made up and a giant throphy.

by doddy13 on Jan 7, 2009 1:48 PM EST up reply actions

Lap points

I don’t think you get points for taking a lap.

The one with a lead in laps win. If there’s a draw the number of points decide.
You get points for sprints. Points = cash!

Honestly, i don't know why these aren't streamed more, Rotterdam 6 days is the only one i know who does.

There are probally more. I may check Bremen tomorrow, but i dont think it is. Maybe just the biggest ones are?

by doddy13 on Jan 7, 2009 1:45 PM EST reply actions

Nikki, you win if you are ahead on laps

ties are broken by points ( or did I misunderstand you asking re: each lap roughly translates to 100 points )

by peterfish on Jan 7, 2009 1:48 PM EST reply actions

I thought I read that 1 lap is equal to like 100 points.

thus my thinking it works in deciding the event overall versus a specific race.

"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."

by nikki on Jan 7, 2009 1:52 PM EST up reply actions

I thought it went the other way

like, if you gained 100 points you were granted another lap? But I’m new at this, and might have misunderstood what I was reading.

Google is my domestique.

by majope on Jan 7, 2009 1:54 PM EST up reply actions

I get the laps win the madison = laps 1st, followed by point

but for the overall, is it based on points as some races give you point and it’s not a lap thing. Thus, having any point value on a lap to begin with. I may be totally wrong as I’ve got no idea how the actual overall event winner is decided.

"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."

by nikki on Jan 7, 2009 1:51 PM EST up reply actions

And their is a sprint every 10 laps

Some say the best things in life, are one the inside.

by Frinking on Jan 7, 2009 1:54 PM EST up reply actions

I'm pretty sure the Madison is 200 laps, sprints every 20.

I’m really confused how all the points and lap tie together for the overall.
The lap counts I’ve seen in this even seem to be related directly to the madison laps gained/lost.
And I think the laps counts as points or we’d never see points over 100, just add’l laps. right?
I may not be making any sense. I have this land is your land, this land is my land messing up my thoughts.

"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."

by nikki on Jan 7, 2009 2:00 PM EST up reply actions

competition now

What we are looking at is 45minutes + 10 laps. A sprint every 10 laps.

by Lopex on Jan 7, 2009 2:04 PM EST up reply actions

overall winner is whoever is ahead on laps

if a tie, then # points decides the tie-breaker

by peterfish on Jan 7, 2009 1:54 PM EST up reply actions

For the overall overall too?

I agree the Madison is scored that way.

"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."

by nikki on Jan 7, 2009 2:01 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, that's why B and B are leading

they have far less points than others but are one lap up and therefore are leading the overall

by Phil H. on Jan 7, 2009 2:03 PM EST up reply actions

exactly

yep the overall overall is # laps up you are, if 2 or more teams are tied with same # laps, then whichever team is ahead on points wins the overall overall – sweet no?

could be really close / exciting for 2nd through 4th overall overall places today

not to mention the win !
What I mean is right now there are 3 teams with close to 210 – 220 points and these teams will all be fighting for laps, along with the Lamp – Marv Yahoo going to be fun.

by peterfish on Jan 7, 2009 2:13 PM EST up reply actions

I love this music today!

I am going with majority above on scoring. Laps first and foremost followed by the sprint points. Both in the Madison and in the overall. Makes sense as I have now realized sprinters are in their own category and not with the 13 teams shown in the overall. Last day, at least we’re sorting it all out for the next one. (I so hope we find a next one somewhere.)

The red balls again

Pretty lame part. The riders get to throw 6 red balls into the audience. Yesterday it took them a lot of tries to get them out of the track. And then the good part is. 1 of those balls has a triangle on it, that one wins a prize. Stupid imho.

HEY... there is nothing wrong at all with any of these men's butts.

At least I don’t think so. But I do have to agree these track guys are “built”. :-)

I thought in the recap of last night's race you sounded more male.

At least with the fun you were having with your brother.

which particular sprint?

up next is time trial (200m)

the next sprint I see is: Six-Day Sprint Race: Sprint final. It does not happen for another 40 minutes I think?

On a random note

isn’t this years Giro pretty well suited for Dekker-leader at the Giro helper to Cadel at the Tour? Oh that would be so sweet

Lance said on his twitter last night that he'll be tweeting

immediately before during (if possible) and after races. That will be fun.

by ZoeRochelle on Jan 7, 2009 3:44 PM EST reply actions

Imagine during the race, could be great

“I’m about to attack these fools, just watch” or “I’m cracking miserably, I sure hope that no one attacks” or he could twitter with Bert during the race to talk strategy, the possibilities are endless

by Bruce Suomi on Jan 7, 2009 3:50 PM EST up reply actions

Oh Schumi, I wonder if he is having a relationship with Blago

they both are claiming innocence with proof of their guilt out there. But what Piepoli said today was very humbling, I have to give him respect for being so brutally honest.

Life bans on the first offense is a little harsh

2 time no doubt, but they deserve a chance to prove they can do it clean and that they have learned their lesson

I think the solution will never be completely solved

really these guys that are doping are so overconfident they will wont be caught that they will do it even with life bans, I think most guys are clean now, it’s getting better in my view.

Someone needs to teach that man how to do handslings

he’s a bit feeble, pathetic and, erm, limp-wristed. Some of the women earlier on would have ripped his arm off.

A frozen 'cross ride from this last weekend. As you may be aware we have had siberian conditions here in the UK with a low of -14 degrees centigrade here on saturday morning. It was a beautiful sunny morning so i layered up and set off for a snowy 'cross ride along a roman road. I checked the thermometer when i got back to find it had been -10 throughout the ride! I had a lot of fun though and the views were spectacular.
