It was on the Twit

from the unofficial Shack Twit. Also, Neil from Road says he heard something to this effect during the Tour of Missouri. I think it’s odd that he’d go back to the Giro, myself. Vediamo.

See once you go Giro you can't go back

quite a hit for the ASO already. Well doing the Giro this year did seem to put him into great form for the Tour, I really don’t look forward to the obsessive amount of camera time the Italians will give him but I do look forward to seeing how he does up those super steep slopes next year. Also it appears he is doing some classics, Paris-Roubaix anyone?

Armstrong and Classics

Yeah…remember he talked up doing Flanders this year too. Any race that Armstrong mentions now (other than probably TDU and the Tour) must be taken with a big grain of salt.

What you really think I believe LA is doing P-R?

no no no, that would be too rough on his butt. But maybe an Ardennes classic, probably not but maybe.

Agreed

I’ll believe it when I see him going through the Forest of Arrenberg.

I mean uh... hasn't that ever occurred to you, man? Sir?

Did he not profess somewhere to have really enjoyed the Giro?

Despite having given the outward appearance of the exact opposite at every possible opportunity?

Reading the title I thought the city of LA had been invaded by Mexico

or given to Mexico to help Cali’s struggling economy. Either one would be fine by me..

Same here

A lifelong dream come true for most Northern Californians.

As much as I enjoy the ToC,

they have no business moving it to May. Lance aside, the field will be far less impressive going head-to-head with the Giro.
Bad business decision, bottom line.

hard to believe

I remember reading an interview maybe a month ago in which Armstrong said he wasn’t sure he’d do ToC, because he thought the Giro had been good preparation for the Tour this year. At the time, I thought he was probably just trying to up the bidding on his ToC appearance fee by suggesting he might prefer the Giro, and that’s pretty much what I still think.

For one thing, it’s difficult to imagine RCS ponying up for another two-million-euro appearance fee next year, after Armstrong reportedly instigated the Milan protest (which infuriated Zomegnan), and then refused to speak to the press for the last half of the race.

Also, if rumors of a Giro route chock-full of ridiculously hard climbs are true, Armstrong seems likely to revert to his long-held position that the Giro is too difficult to be used as training for the Tour.

As a side note, several Italians I met at the Giro this year (not press members, but people I met while out riding) attributed the dumbing-down of this year’s Giro course to Armstrong’s presence in the race. Not only did RCS insert the 61k crono to please Armstrong, the theory went, but Lance was responsible for the gutting of the Cuneo to Pinerolo stage, and when he balked at the super-long climb to Blockhaus, suddenly the last six kilometers of the road was deemed unsuitable. Heh.

Appearance fees

This is also what I think: he’s trying to play the two races off one another to grab more cash. I agree with your comment about the RCS – I’d be surprised if they threw that much cash at Armstrong again, not only because of the hijinx during the race, but also because I had the impression that had difficulty getting a return on it.

I have a post thingy coming on the course rumors – it looks classic Giro with very hard climbing.

"grab more cash"

That is exactly the part that I really despice, Lance is loaded with cash, the fees he is getting are ridiculous.

Giro course rumors, yay!

I’ve had trouble making much sense of the little rumorage I’ve seen so far. It can’t wait to see what you’ve found, and especially, to see it all pulled together into one post :-)

Since "course rumors" = "travel plans" for you

I bet you can’t wait.
I’m not bitter. I saw two stages of the Tour of Denmark. So there!

(One of them was won by a real live italian EPO-doper too, so it was like a real Giro-stage and everything.)

by Jens on Oct 2, 2009 2:44 AM EDT up reply actions

Just read an article in the Italian press

saying that Armstrong is undecided about the Giro ;-)

So yeah, bargaining for fees, I’m thinking.
