This is tempting.
Won’t be as manic as at the Tour I imagine….

Pippo will likely have relatives there too
Dauphiné is fun live …. big enough crowds to be worthwhile …. but a lot less mayhem

Pippo comes from Alpe d'Huez!

It's funny the mayor thinks Alpe d'Huez might be forgotten if they don't promote it heavily.
But then I would guess all the businesses that like that extra income in the summer won’t support his reelection if he can’t bring the Tour(ists) back over and over.

not really .... i think hotels up high are well under capacity in most french ski resorts during summer
but there has been a concerted effort in recent years to increase summer tourism

ah you might be right about the hotels
but the area is full of tourists – campgrounds are all packed, roads full, people everywhere – at least when i was there. Still they must have more capacity for when the tour comes through (or ski season)

All I know is
shortly after the Tour left Bourg d’Oisans the day after the Alpe D’Huez stage last year, the Alpe was all but deserted. But that may be unusual and a result of the Tour; perhaps it’s more crowded in early July and August.

The ex Alpe d'Huez Mayor 2001 - 2008

Maybe he was fired for failing to get 2009 Tour ;)
Interestingly he has an avaiation background. Alpe d’Huez has an airport …. an effective way to get the uber rich to visit.
