Memorable Moment: Nominations, Please!

Unlike the other two categories, this one is utterly subjective. Pick one moment that you savored, or laughed about, or screamed at your computer, etc. What was your favorite cycling memory from 2009? If this is the same as your race of the year, no harm done, but I suspect it won't be in most cases. The only rule is that it have to do with the races and racers themselves, not the Cafe. We will have some separate chatter on that score later.

Again, voting starts next Monday.

I will start this one

Thor’s crash in Paris-Roubaix. I may be swayed to vote for something else, but that race was already nailbiting high drama, and when Thor went down, everything suddenly changed. I’m not sure it’s appropriate to weep for Pippo Pozzato, but that was a tough way to lose. Same for Hushovd, who might very well have scored the upset of the year that day.

Wouldn't Thor's mountain rampage

be more applicable? Jumping ahead in time, it’s hard to imagine anybody crashing at Roubaix standing out as memorable. The green jersey on the attack over multiple cols and showing Cav the level of his class, though, that will be hard for me to forget.

Evans winning Worlds

Probably a case of picking something that was recent enough that I actually remember it, but seeing him win Worlds really made an impression. The guy had a terrible year, had horrible luck in Le Tour and the Vuelta despite his tremendous skills and lack of team support, not to mention the amount of crap he gets around these parts, from myself included. Good on ya, Cadel. Disclaimer: I am not Australian.

My top three moments...

1. Paris-Nice, Stage 7: Bert looks human, and get completely worked over by strong group of six, featuring LuLu, Colom, F Schleck, Sylvain Chavenel and Jens Voigt. Not only does Contador lose the overall this day, but he finished 33rd place after having one of the most impressive bonks since Floyd. Seeing him pedaling squares up the small uphill finish was shocking, especially after groups who were way behind him with 15k left, catch and pass him like he’s standing still.

2. Menchov Time Trial crash

3. A Schleck wins L-B-L: Attacks on the penultimate climb and solos for the win. That is how you win a monument.

After all of the polemica at the TdF and Lance Armstrong's trash talking Contador,

the day (don’t remember which stage it was) that Contador rode away from the group with Lance in it is memorable. He only gained 20 seconds or so but kept Lance away from the yellow jersey. I loved that he supposedly “disobeyed” team orders. IMO that is the moment he won the Tour.

Verbier

My favorite moment was on Stage 15 right before AC takes off. He looks back at Andy Schleck two or three times and then takes off. And it wasn’t a violent acceleration where he jumped all over his bike or did a big wind up. He looked completely nonchalant when he pedaled away—like he was heading home after a weekend ride with his friends. A beautiful thing to see.

I have the stage saved on my DVR—well the 30 minutes commercial free portion. He always looks to be most concerned about Andy Schleck—the Schleck Brother attacks are pretty easy to diagram at this point. I never got the sense that he was worried (or even thinking about) Armstrong.

I'm going to be domestic and say that Kristian House winning the British national champs made me do a victory dance like nothing else this season.

He’d ridden so well all season and been really unlucky not to win anything, and was I think getting a bit frustrated at the lack of results. I spoke to him about 3 days before and he said it was a good course for him, but he really didn’t feel he had the form to win it. When I was told he had I thought people were pulling my leg….it meant so much to him and I think my screaming could be heard in Timbuktu.

The moment Columbia split the race in the crosswinds.

It turned out to not be that big of a deal, but it certainly had the potential with a pissed off Columbia train sticking it to the rest of the field. And it created a lot of drama in an stage that was pegged as boring. Btw, I hate when any stage is pegged as boring.

funny thing is i saw jb interviewed

immediately after the stage and he said nothing at all about berto disobeying orders. He said he had told the riders to see how they felt, discuss it and take their own decision. He clearly was not happy that contador had come so close to the yellow and said so. Odd that armstrong coming so close before hadn’t bothered him.

Of course all of this also didn’t fit with the whole, we’ll decide who the leader is based on what happens on the road. But every time berto made something happen on the road all we heard was “betrayal.”

But yeah, Arcalis was a great moment.

The moments I remember most from this year were from Emma Pooley

She had a couple of similar long range attacks at GP Costa Etruria and at Plouay, but what sticks with me the most is the way she slowly lost the Giro on the long long downhill into S. Elena Sannita. She had done all the hard work on earlier days in the timetrial and the hard uphill finish on Monte Serra, but then she didn’t even lose out to a Savoldelli style downhiller, she just couldn’t keep up with everyone else.

Cancellara's Swiss Timing

Retaining the yellow jersey and holding his fingers just apart to measure the margin. Loved it!

Not one specific moment

but the way the cycling world has been using Twitter this season has been great. Even with TV coverage we usually only see the top riders and the front of the race. It’s been great to read about all the little struggles to get back after a wheel change/dropping a water bottle etc.

My Moment

Was at the USPRO Crit Champs. Watching Rahsaan Bahati come from 20 places back in the final lap, to be the first rider out of the final turn, only to lose traction on the wet pavement and slide into the barriers was incredibly exciting. I’d also include Thor’s crash at PR, Thor’s Stage 17 break to secure the Green Jersey, GHH’s Stage 13 victory, and Tony celebrating the last 200m in the Worlds TT.

Tickets are bought, Belgium here I come!

The Tour was not a classic this year, it has to be said.

But the Grand Bornand stage was a definite highiight.

Thor’s points escapade.
The Contador/Kloden incident (and subseqently Contador/Bruyneel/Armstrong incident)
VdV burying himself for Wiggins.
The stage win for the Schlecks.

And a brutal stage, all told.

I have some and there will be more coming me think.

1. Gesink’s attack on Valverde. I was sooooo hoping he could get it and he ended out having 200 meters. Too bad Valverde pulled Gesink back.
2. Last stage of the Tour. And than esp[ecially Renshaw. The last corner he(?) took and the failure of the Garmin was truly fenomonal.
3. Posthuma who fell during the last TT in the Eneco. I was there and sawq it on the big screen. It was facked up but beautifull.
4. The Rabo train. As mentioned above
5. The attack of HH 30km(?) for the finish when he was in a gropu with Boonen, Devolder and an other QST-epper. Somebody can catch the race now I hope? The pain on the faces of the QST-epper when they tried to bridge the gap was incroytable
6. Attack of Gresink in AMG.. Here was hoping!
7. Voeckler who won the Etoile de Bessèges. Saw it ;ive and was a very happy men
8. Garate who won on the Alpe d’Huez. One of the first stage of the Tour I saw live. Nice to see him win
9. Comeback of Vino.
10. Stagewin of Booooom! in the Vuelta

bravo frinkster

I think that sprint on the champs—and the perfect execution by Columbia combined with Farrar’s lack of trust in Dean’s line through the corner—might be the best moment of the year for me.

by R Mc on Oct 20, 2009 8:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I've seen it a couple of times and it was truly stunning.

For me, if you have to catch the mastery of Colombia in one shot this year it’s that moment.. How much I dislike Cav btw

It was a signature moment

The blue ribband for sprinters…
Teams having had 3 weeks to work out what to do…
Garmin rocking skinsuits…

And no-one else was in the picture from 300m out. It put the stamp on just how good the Cav / Col combination is, and how much he has his opposition pschologically beaten

Even my girlfriend highlighted that moment with an OU!!!

She is learning some cycling…and using clipless pedals now….but still….even someone who is not addicted could tell it was amazing

i was also happy for voekler

but did anyone else get the sense that the other 2 riders just quit at the end? As in it was agreed, or maybe just in sympathy for the old guy …. Just looked odd to me for his last attack and no response from the others.

by yeehoo on Oct 21, 2009 4:55 AM EDT up reply actions

That was the TdF stage?

Don’t remember that one.It was de Tour du Haut-Var btw. Somewhere in february there was suddenly a stream and at the end Voeckler won.. Well it made my day! Although it was not so much of a victory

by Frinking on Oct 21, 2009 5:50 AM EDT up reply actions

oh ok,

yeah i was talking about the tdf stage he won.

Haha thanx. But as the head says:
he only rule is that it have to do with the races and racers themselves, not the Cafe. We will have some separate chatter on that score later

You may nominate me later (:

The nomination may not have been in the 'correct' place

but it’s no less valuable ;)

Syringe boy deserved to be pushed and should have been arrested.

Not a fan of idiots running beside the riders …. and targeting one is even worse IMHO

So long as he's not blocking, it's free speech, and pushing is an assault.

Once he gets in the fricking way, it’s obstruction, and he should be at least threatened with arrest—even if he’s not in a silly suit, and not holding crap in his hands. But in that case, they’d need to arrest a lot of delirious drunk fans on the GT climbs, too.

One (admittedly minor) memorable moment to add

I got a huge kick out of Arashiro keeping his TT bike upright, offroad, when the TTT turned ugly for Bbox. That was just oddly cool.

A frozen 'cross ride from this last weekend. As you may be aware we have had siberian conditions here in the UK with a low of -14 degrees centigrade here on saturday morning. It was a beautiful sunny morning so i layered up and set off for a snowy 'cross ride along a roman road. I checked the thermometer when i got back to find it had been -10 throughout the ride! I had a lot of fun though and the views were spectacular.
