VDS 2009 Dream Team, Redux
So after f'ing this up in the VDS thread (I blame Will because... well... just because) I decided to redo it using Chris' actual final spreadsheet this time, rather than the actual non-official spreadsheet that I pulled out of my ass. So, following the rules as I remember them (must you can have one 25 point rider at most, no more than two 20 point riders, 25 riders total with a total cost of no more than 150 points), here is my best effort at the 2009 VDS dream team....
Name (Cost, Points Earned, Value)
- Alejandro Valverde (25, 2408, 96.32)
- Philippe Gilbert (16, 1990, 124.38)
- Thor Hushovd (16, 1560, 97.50)
- Denis Menchov (16, 1610, 100.63)
- Samuel Sanchez Gonzalez (14, 1730, 123.57)
- Roman Kreuziger (12, 1090, 90.83)
- Matti Breschel (8, 870, 108.75)
- Edvald Boasson Hagen (6, 1181, 196.83)
- Luis Leon Sanchez Gil (6, 688, 114.67)
- Tyler Farrar (4, 1090, 272.50)
- Tony Martin (4, 910, 227.50)
- Stefano Garzelli (4, 900, 225.00)
- Alessandro Petacchi (4, 804, 201.00)
- Heinrich Haussler (2, 1065, 532.50)
- Andre Greipel (2, 1055, 527.50)
- Simon Gerrans (2, 900, 450.00)
- Johnny Hoogerland (1, 570, 570.00)
- Rein Taaramae (1, 540, 540.00)
- Jacob Fuglsang (1, 490, 490.00)
- Michele Scarponi (1, 456, 456.00)
- Frantisek Rabon (1, 370, 370.00)
- Kevin Seeldrayers (1, 350, 350.00)
- Philipe Deignan (1, 330, 330.00)
- Ignas Konovalovas (1, 305, 305.00)
- Francesco Gavazzi (1, 290, 290.00)
Total Cost = 150
Total Points = 23,552
The "value" is just the points earned per point of cost. I'm sure one of you smartypants out there can do this the right way, using modern tools such as math, but that is too much work for me. My brain hurts already.

You should stick this back in your ass.
Now my head hurts too.
I mean uh... hasn't that ever occurred to you, man? Sir?
No, man, you got it all wrong
This version didn’t come out of my ass. That was the last version, man.
And can I please get some props for contributing actual content?
I’m trying to be the shepherd, Ringo. I’m trying real hard
It is interesting
(assuming this is indeed a near-perfect team) that the actual winning team followed the extreme top-heavy formula while the theoretical ideal team consists of a wider span of mid-price riders.
Just goes to show
how hard the high value, low cost riders are to pick. They show up out of nowhere and win a stage or two, or win a smaller tour, and … I was playing around a bit, and if you select Valverde as your mandatory 25’er, then choose the 24 top value riders (none of whom cost more than 4 points), you would have won the VDS with a total of 14,244 points having only spent 59 of your 150 budget.
It's amazing
how different this team is from mine.

Sorry, can't be no dream team without Tony.

You are correct
I just checked the rules and you could only have one 25 point rider at most, but having one was not mandatory.
Wow, check out the big brain on Jimbo...
You a smart mutha……

Not if Hoogerland is 6 points and Fuglsang is 12 points.
I think Chris and Ursula sometimes assign points with an I’m not picking him but I don’t want to get beat by him because I kept the cost low attitude.

uh huh
When Greg Henderson first got a pro contract I wanted to sign him up for my VDS, but he wasn’t on the list. So I asked Chris what his value was and what I got was 4 pts.. To that point he had only won the Crocodile (something or other) Race in Australia and not much else. He had the potential but nothing concrete to base a Pro Tour season on, I didn’t figure he was worth four out of the box and he wasn’t. The best reason to research these things is to see who they overlook and then pounce. :-} Disclaimer:I haven’t done that so I’m sure that works either.

it's a little scary
how many on that list i am a fan of
Moreau’s only highlight in 2009 was whipping it out at “Will”
Moo

Start with Gerdemann and go down hill from there.

I had two of those. Luckily I also had 6 from the 'best' team.

Silly rules
last year I had Mikhaylo Khalilov, who not only didn’t ride a single VDS race but was on a team that didn’t ride a single VDS race. And then, just to rub it in at the very end of the season, he only went and won the Coppa Sabatini, which at that time wasn’t a VDS race.
