Today's Topic - Movie roles
I'm too lazy to throw a poll up, so I leave it to our learned audience to decide the following: Who had the best cameo, un-credited role, or very small role in a movie? I list my favorites, which you can vote on, or you can include your own.
Brad Pitt in True Romance
Philip Seymour Hoffman in The Big Lebowski (can't find a F***ing clip)
PSH again, Almost Famous (you have to wait for it)
Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder
Discuss.

I am completely biased
toward anything PSH does. Well, except maybe his squirmy 25th Hour role, and that really depressing movie about his wife’s suicide, but he was so great in Mr. Ripley and Charlie Wilson’s War that I don’t care.

I can only comment on movies I've seen
How’d you get trapped into that one Ted?
I mean uh... hasn't that ever occurred to you, man? Sir?
Haven't seen it either
Did see Michael Palin on the BBC Culture Show last night where he said that he played a small role in the movie that got cut in the editing room. According to him, probably because he made Tom Hanks look wooden.
Sorry gents
The cool cameo by which all cool cameos are judged…

Oh Please
It’s not even the best cameo in that movie.
See Ford, Harrison. That is all.
I mean uh... hasn't that ever occurred to you, man? Sir?
pfft
Harrison Ford in Apocalypse Now = Spaulding Gray in The Killing Fields. Future star playing a bureaucrat. Whatever.
Ask yourself this: could someone else have done the Harrison Ford role? Now how about Hopper’s?

It's not future star playing beuracrat
It’s Han Solo playing a CIA bagman. Huge difference.
I mean uh... hasn't that ever occurred to you, man? Sir?
That is not even a cameo
that is a "best supporting actor’ type of role. Way to big of a role for this… Oh, and Drew, the best cameo in that movie was Linda Carpenter, miss August, 1976
Jimbo Wins
And he’s also correct about the size of the role.
I mean uh... hasn't that ever occurred to you, man? Sir?
Oh, I have been served, have I?
Sure, you can keep moving the line around, but that movie was 72 hours long and Dennis Hopper was only on screen for about 10 minutes.

no
you’re thinking of the bar scene in Star Wars. That was an Ed’s League moment if ever there was one.

Agree to disagree
Though I will grant you it’s an excellent role for Dennis and probably could not have been played by another. Unless Hunter S. was available.
I mean uh... hasn't that ever occurred to you, man? Sir?
Dennis earns extra points
for his “sicilians” scene with Walken in True Romance.
Walken in Pulp Fiction deserves mention too. “and I kept that uncomfortable hunk of metal…….”
...up my ass for another 3 years."
I would actually take Walken over Hopper in True Romance as the better cameo, but imo he had better dialog to work with.
I mean uh... hasn't that ever occurred to you, man? Sir?
Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhh... dis guy... dis fuckin' guy!

In any of them. Yes, I agree.

I thought he was weak in the final scenes
but I found him more believable than in the role he played in Chrono des Nations
definitely a good pick
but i preferred his cameo in the 2007 TDF, much more dramatic, a real roller coaster performance
I'm surprised at you tedvdw
I wouldn’t have expected you to notice anyone but Sharon Stone in that movie

Where the fack are you guys talking about?!
But maybe I can say here..
The special effects were special but so completely out of line in Die Hard 4.0.
Well that said.. I’m out
Since we're on the film topic
did anyone see the Race Across the Sky flick last night besides me?
No horn, watch for finger.
most of my riding
friends did. I, of course, did not. And didn’t make it to the event I was supposed to be at. Figures.
I liked it
It gave you a real good feel for the whole course, I wish every race could have such a documentary done. You could almost use it as a study for riding the course. Dave Weins is indeed the “favorite son” at that event and that was brought out in the film. Some really great stories thrown in to the mix as well.
No horn, watch for finger.
Downtown Chicago all lost out last night.
They couldn’t get the feed so it was a no go. It is said to be aired again Nov. 12th.
I'm ready for this road season to wrap up. Bring on Cross!

Brad Pitt in 'Inglorious Basterds'
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
'Good Ole boy' accent from the South
but not Texas. I feel sure that there are people better qualified to talk about this ;( It was ironic – but you got that I suppose… Brilliant film!
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
That openings scene was serious the most briljant openings scene EVER in a movie..
And when they were talking Italien.. That was briljant! Buon Journo
Totally agree! I was holding my breath... to no avail..
I couldn’t believe how much i loved the whole film. the German actor who played the Nazi officer was stunning, as was the French(?) actress.
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
The German was truly stunning..
Can we nominate him here or was his ‘play’ to big? And the French was ok.. Not very good..
The basement scene was also beautiful. He brought it very slow to a climax. I know he do that in all his movies but this was the first one I really liked of Tarentino
The part he 'played' was too big for nomination here, but he was spectacular
Agree not only about the basement scene but also Tarantino. I’ve always hated that much violence, even though it’s satirical, but in this film everything was so amazing, I coped with the gore. The basement scene was unbelievably suspenseful.
You have an artist’s eye Frinking :)
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
My eyes!
I think when I’m really interested I get to eager to speak and i overlook the reply button.
With the ’artist’s eye’, you may be right but mine is learned, given your age I’m thinking you’re a natural. And Jens compared you (oblquely), to Hunter S. Thompson… very cool.
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
lol.. obliquely is a word!
And have to read more about the Hunter S. Thompson.. I looked him up bu already forgot who he was
Considered to be one of the best journalists/ authors
of the twentieth century. Have you heard of ‘gonzo’ journalism? He was the king. He wrote for ‘Rolling Stone’ for years, plus books like ‘fear and Loathing in Las Vegas’. Hero to a generation of writers :)
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
one of my all-time favorites
As long as you don’t think too much about his real-life persona.

crazy american drug-crazed journalist
i’m sure some others here can give you a better idea – or even wiki. Has lots of huge fans – wrote some books – covered mostly sports i think – sort of a legend and certainly one of a kind.
Is this instead of a polemica on Thompson?
But the beach was a balmy 27 degrees :)
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
huh?
no polemica from me. I don’t have any opinion of him. Never managed to have an appreciation for him but maybe just didn’t look enough. I know lots who love the guy. When i said drug-crazed i didn’t mean this as a negative – thompson surely didn’t either.
None from me either :)
I was just trying to divine Ted’s meaning… as for me, I admire his work, but I don’t always love it…
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
He had a hot streak
from about 1968-75. After Nixon resigned, he started losing his edge. A lot of his newer work feels totally rehashed. But it would be totally in character for him to milk everyone for cash by shamelessly rehashing old material.

Biggest thing in many ways is that he inspired writers and readers to think differently
about journalism. And if we start thinking about his real life persona about half the greats would be banned :(
