Going to Koksijde (if I can find it?)

Hello everyone, long time listener, first time caller here. I realize it’s probably rather bad form to delurk with a plea for information, but if it weren’t for this site I probably wouldn’t be asking in the first place....

Is anyone planning to go to the WC cross at Koksijde on the 28th? Or has been before? If so, does anyone actually know how exactly to get to the course? There’s a bus stop listed on the website, but the map is useless. I’ve never been to one of these things and I don’t really speak Dutch/Flemish, so I’m having horrible visions of aimlessly wandering damp and forlorn along the Flemish coast.

Might be a bit of a long shot but I know there’s some cross fans in the house....

My best advise..

Just fellow the croud.. (:

But sort of serious.. i have no idea where Koksijde is. If you pass a link I can translate/explain the procedures. Think there will be shuttle busses between the station and the course.. (I assume you go by train?)

What do you fear most?

Actually

“follow the crowd” is excellent advice. Be prepared for large crowds, especially around the bier, jenever and frieten stands.

by tedvdw on Nov 17, 2009 7:00 PM EST up reply actions

Heh, well, logical advice on following the crowd. I guess I’m a bit of a nervous traveller.

Thanks for the response and the offer, I think tedvdw has got me sorted out on the details.

by Krtek on Nov 18, 2009 3:40 AM EST up reply actions

Don't worry, (almost) everybody speaks English

I guess you found the directions http://veloclubkoksijde.be/html/body_bereikbaarheid.html
and the course map http://veloclubkoksijde.be/assets/images/Parcours2009_3.jpg

The directions say: take the train to Koksijde Station, then the bus to Koksijde, get off at stop Carrefour (name of a big supermarket chain) which makes for a very short bus ride. If you start in Oostende (with ferry?) take the “kusttram” (coast tram) to Koksijde-Bad, then bus towards (but not to) Veurne, to the same stop Carrefour (same short ride).

The course map is not “north = up” but almost upside down. The start/finish is on the Robert Vandammestraat around here: http://maps.google.com/?ll=51.10297,2.64116&t=h&z=17

This is brilliant, thank you so, so much for the help!!

I sort of suspected that everyone might speak English, but I’ve gotten myself pretty spectacularly lost in places where that’s not true, so I’m a bit over cautious now. :)

by Krtek on Nov 18, 2009 3:39 AM EST up reply actions

Cheers.

You know, if I were to make a day of it I think I would take the train to Oostende (I imagine there’s an express service from Brussels) followed by the often scenic “kusttram:” http://www.dekusttram.be/images/overzichtHaltes2009.jpg
From Oostende Station to Koksijde Bad takes an hour, about 3 trams/hour. Time table: http://www.dekusttram.be/dienst_9nov-18dec09/Dienst_9nov-18dec2009.pdf (page 5).

I'm going to Koksijde but am getting a lift with a photographer friend so have no idea personally how to get there!

I was about to try and babble something but then tedvdw posted something altogether better above! Hope you enjoy it as much as I plan to ;-)

Oh, and welcome :)

Thanks for the welcome. :)

Should be a fun day. Possibly the first time I find myself unsure of whether to hope for wet weather on a day out…. :) I realize this is always creepy coming from a random internet person, but if you (and your friend of course if they’re not working?) are interested in meeting up for a beer at some point… (I’m a 20 something female, btw, and not looking for a date!) If not, no worries, and likewise, hope you enjoy it. :)

Definitely Boonen, I think his was the first hottitude I ever noticed in the peloton. Actually I seem to be quite into blonds generally these days – Boasson Hagan and Niels Albert (hey, topical!) are definitely on my list as well. Portal, mais oui – Sky is going to be nice eye candy. Capecchi is so beautiful it kind of hurts to look at him – I think almost too pretty to be hot. Likewise Quinziato. And I’m afraid I’m not really up to date on the Basques. hides

You have good taste ;-) Boonen was my first cycling love for sure.

Niels Albert…oh yes, my very topical winter crush! I think I may faint if I meet him in Koksijde. Another way to find me may be to listen out for a girl squeaking “Niiiieeeeels!!!!” You have no idea how happy I was when I read that Portal was carrying on next year after all that business with his heart condition. Soooooo hot, even in his team mugshot!

Definitely Boonen, I think his was the first hottitude I ever noticed in the peloton.
You have good taste ;-) Boonen was my first cycling love for sure.

I believe that’s Step 2 of the Hottitude Awareness Progression (male appreciation edition).

Step 1: “Hey, look at those guys in Lycra—I think I’ll watch for a while.”

Step 2: “Wow, that Boonen dude sure is hot.”

Step 3: “But you know, not as hot as ______ (fill in blank according to preference).”

Things kind of diverge from there, but the first three steps are generally believed to be universal.

It was just a long race--Edvald Boasson Hagen, on the Giro

Showing my age here, but George was my first 'crush'

and Boonen seemed too pretty. In early days I was a bit more one-eyed too … he was Robbie McEwen’s main competition.

Haha, true!

I still like Tom though, and remind myself of his hottitude on a regular basis. I’ve just ordered the 2009 P-R on DVD which I feel will be a useful visual reminder ;-)

Ha!

He’s definitely a gateway drug.

by Krtek on Nov 18, 2009 9:05 AM EST up reply actions

Isn't Boonen everyone's first cycling love? :)

I think I’ve got to rep the Czech Rep. and use my limited Czech vocab to cheer for Zdenek “always the bridesmaid” Stybar but a “Niiieeellss!!!” or two might slip out. I’m sure anyway that he’ll be glad for your support – you might save him from a career change, the poor darling. :)

You know someone’s good looking when they even look good in the mugshot.

by Krtek on Nov 18, 2009 9:03 AM EST up reply actions

Niels won't change career just yet.

The poor darling got a bit angry in the heat of the moment but I’m sure he’s seen sense. If he does feel tempted I’m sure I can use my powers of persuasion ;-) Perhaps a large banner….“Niels: we love you and you belong wherever there’s mud!” or something like that ;) Stybar I also like, but not as much as Niels!

Hee

I’d sign it. I can’t imagine he’ll actually make the switch anytime soon, it would just be wrong. Ah well, he may get a bit cranky sometimes, but at least it’s not on twitter. :)

Stybar just strikes me as such a normal guy. And I love his Czech accented Dutch.

I'm also a 20 something female and am always up for drinks, especially of the Belgian variety...

…but I’m kind of unsure of how the day may pan out. My friend is there working rather than being an idle spectator and as we’re going back to England the same night there won’t be much time to hang around. There may also be a couple of other people coming that I don’t know and I have no idea what they might wish to do…getting separated in such a large crowd might be problematic if we’re ever to make it back in one piece…!

Aha, fair enough. I’m going alone due to circumstances (the circumstances being related to both travel plans and a shocking reluctance of friends to stand around in Flanders in November watching people on bikes) so I’m pretty flexible, but I also can’t hang around in the evening. I see that you’ve got an e-mail in your profile, so I’ll send you my mobile number, and you can always send me an SMS or give me a call on the spot when you know what’s up. If it’s too complicated, as I said before, no worries, getting back in one piece is important. :)

by Krtek on Nov 18, 2009 5:10 AM EST up reply actions

Yes, of course feel free to drop me an email.

We’ll see how things go…I might find that he’s off running about with his tripod and I end up rather lonely! I know what you mean about friends not wanting to stand around in Flanders in the winter. Most of my friends would be horrified at the thought, and I’ve had this problem in the past…I almost went to Alpe d’Huez on my own a couple of years ago but finally found someone willing ;) Where are you from?

by Albertina on Nov 18, 2009 5:52 AM EST up reply actions

Done. :)

Saddest would be if we both end up lonely. :) If it was local I could probably drag my roommate along since she’s a journalism student always in need of new action/editorial shots for school. I’m Canadian, but I’m in the Czech Republic for a term, but I’m going to Germany for some thesis research, and then I thought, hey, Belgium is only a few hours away… it makes sense when you think on a North American scale of distance. Almost.

by Krtek on Nov 18, 2009 5:59 AM EST up reply actions

I see!

So will you be in the Czech Rep for the Cross World Champs or will you be home by then?

Sadly I’ll be home by then. Stupid North American school year. I was originally going to go to the WC round in Plzen, but it’s actually a huge pain to get there from where I’m living.

Usually when you travel alone you are more likely to meet others. Don't worry...

Drunken Flemish types can be amusing though.

And drunken Basques are fun.

Heh

This is my second around time in Europe, so I’ve just about managed to wipe out warm smile as my default facial expression, but I’m still working on improving my directness and getting over feeling the need to listen politely to everyone including random strangers. :)

I’d have to laugh if there were drunken Aussies – someone from even farther away than me – now that’s true insanity, er, dedication.

Insane for an Australian is being somewhere wet and cold watching cross

… although it makes the drinking more important. Winter in Europe was fascinating but a pain in many ways. So much more stuff needed than those three summer months swanning round Greece :)

Any excuse to put on the beer jacket...

Winter in most parts of Europe isn’t real winter in my books though. They have the Gulf Stream. The Christmas markets are outside! Doesn’t stop me complaining about the weather, of course….

by Krtek on Nov 18, 2009 11:17 AM EST up reply actions

Yes the weather here can really suck but

The beer is good, especially in Belgium. Where will you be in Germany? I live in the Eifel region myself, near Trier.

Ah the beer. Just not the same at home!

Mostly I’ll be in Dresden, but I’m going to spend a day or two in Aachen and/or Koeln before heading on to Flanders. I wish I had more time and money, I’ve hardly seen any of western Germany, only the very south-west when I studied in Freiburg. And Frankfurt (hate that airport!). I’ve always thought the Mosel region would be worth a visit – wine, ruins, and maybe a bit of the Benelux vibe.

Are you German, or an expat?

Yep

But I wish I was going to be in Flanders watching cross.
