Going to Koksijde (if I can find it?)
Hello everyone, long time listener, first time caller here. I realize it’s probably rather bad form to delurk with a plea for information, but if it weren’t for this site I probably wouldn’t be asking in the first place....
Is anyone planning to go to the WC cross at Koksijde on the 28th? Or has been before? If so, does anyone actually know how exactly to get to the course? There’s a bus stop listed on the website, but the map is useless. I’ve never been to one of these things and I don’t really speak Dutch/Flemish, so I’m having horrible visions of aimlessly wandering damp and forlorn along the Flemish coast.
Might be a bit of a long shot but I know there’s some cross fans in the house....

My best advise..
Just fellow the croud.. (:
But sort of serious.. i have no idea where Koksijde is. If you pass a link I can translate/explain the procedures. Think there will be shuttle busses between the station and the course.. (I assume you go by train?)
What do you fear most?
1. coup d’etat
2. putsch
Don't worry, (almost) everybody speaks English
I guess you found the directions http://veloclubkoksijde.be/html/body_bereikbaarheid.html
and the course map http://veloclubkoksijde.be/assets/images/Parcours2009_3.jpg
The directions say: take the train to Koksijde Station, then the bus to Koksijde, get off at stop Carrefour (name of a big supermarket chain) which makes for a very short bus ride. If you start in Oostende (with ferry?) take the “kusttram” (coast tram) to Koksijde-Bad, then bus towards (but not to) Veurne, to the same stop Carrefour (same short ride).
The course map is not “north = up” but almost upside down. The start/finish is on the Robert Vandammestraat around here: http://maps.google.com/?ll=51.10297,2.64116&t=h&z=17

This is brilliant, thank you so, so much for the help!!
I sort of suspected that everyone might speak English, but I’ve gotten myself pretty spectacularly lost in places where that’s not true, so I’m a bit over cautious now. :)
Cheers.
You know, if I were to make a day of it I think I would take the train to Oostende (I imagine there’s an express service from Brussels) followed by the often scenic “kusttram:” http://www.dekusttram.be/images/overzichtHaltes2009.jpg
From Oostende Station to Koksijde Bad takes an hour, about 3 trams/hour. Time table: http://www.dekusttram.be/dienst_9nov-18dec09/Dienst_9nov-18dec2009.pdf (page 5).
I'm going to Koksijde but am getting a lift with a photographer friend so have no idea personally how to get there!
I was about to try and babble something but then tedvdw posted something altogether better above! Hope you enjoy it as much as I plan to ;-)
Oh, and welcome :)

Thanks for the welcome. :)
Should be a fun day. Possibly the first time I find myself unsure of whether to hope for wet weather on a day out…. :) I realize this is always creepy coming from a random internet person, but if you (and your friend of course if they’re not working?) are interested in meeting up for a beer at some point… (I’m a 20 something female, btw, and not looking for a date!) If not, no worries, and likewise, hope you enjoy it. :)
Stop it... you're scaring Krtek and offending Albertina ;)
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
Women (please note Frinking)...
are not being old-fashioned when they exhibit some caution about info. on the net. However, I’m thinking that if Krtek has been reading here, then she feels confident to trust that a meeting’s safe. Old-fashioned is not always bad though ;)
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
I should be quiet now... I sound like I'm 100!
Sorry for the lecture.
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
Not to offend.. But you sound like you're 100 or something..
p.s. I spotted my mistake.. But my English is very sloppy lately..)
What do you fear most?
1. coup d’etat
2. putsch
LOL! Sloppy, not usually these days...
but tiredness or preoccupation are always useful excuses. Personally, I like being a ‘womans’, even an old one ;)
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
No, can't be it..
My hockeygame was also the worst I ever played.. My school work is still ok so I;m totally confused now
What do you fear most?
1. coup d’etat
2. putsch
Maybe confidence?
Mostly you’re really fluent these days, so perhaps you’re checking/editing less? Who knows. I’d blame the hockey… I’m still scared of pucks =(
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
Never fear, I'm not easily offended ;-)
btw Frinking, did you see Franzoi is going to BKCP? It’s all a done deal! No chance of a date for you after Roubaix!

Yeah! Was almot planning making a fanshot of that but nobody would be interested!
But I still have hope! I thought there was a cyclocross in Roubaix. I will take that one ;)
What do you fear most?
1. coup d’etat
2. putsch
They would be very interested
… speaking for myself. You and Albertina are an overarching narrative at PdC… and I’m in need of a good laugh ;)
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
There is a Roubaix cross...but winning that does NOT count!
Bahahaha
"If I were World Road Race Champion, I would wear black shorts. That probably has more to do with me being on the wiser side of 30 and understanding better that the decisions I make now never really go away. White shorts would not be something I'd be proud of...." - David Millar, in Rouleur.
I think Frinking could set up an OT poll
in the deep dark depths of your winter …
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
That would be amusing, but for me the answer is clear:
victory on the cobbles or nothing!
"If I were World Road Race Champion, I would wear black shorts. That probably has more to do with me being on the wiser side of 30 and understanding better that the decisions I make now never really go away. White shorts would not be something I'd be proud of...." - David Millar, in Rouleur.
Now I need to be clear..
Who must win on the cobbles for Frinking to win?
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
Franzoi! Yeah, as if!
"If I were World Road Race Champion, I would wear black shorts. That probably has more to do with me being on the wiser side of 30 and understanding better that the decisions I make now never really go away. White shorts would not be something I'd be proud of...." - David Millar, in Rouleur.
So it's an almost impossible bet? ;)
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
Well Frinking seems convinced of his talent....
"If I were World Road Race Champion, I would wear black shorts. That probably has more to do with me being on the wiser side of 30 and understanding better that the decisions I make now never really go away. White shorts would not be something I'd be proud of...." - David Millar, in Rouleur.
Hmmm ... you have to define 'talent'
Based on what I read here, I think he’s right… except for his ‘chat-up’ lines ;)
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
is it on cobbles?
If not … [yawn]

It was
the best course on the circuit last year. By far.
I mean uh... hasn't that ever occurred to you, man? Sir?
Philipp Walsleben (U23 last year)
Not to be missed: the headline picture on his blog (for Albertina et al.: includes Niels A.)
I hope they were paid well for that.
I’m going to refrain from making the obvious comment on that picture.
Snort...nuff said!
Here’s another. I love their expressions. Niels is laughing manically in sheer embarrasment but Simunek looks strangely content….

Walsleben looks like he's posing for a action movie poster.
Perhaps he’s pretending to be a power ranger or something?!

Heh. My Frinking → English is still a bit ropey, but I’ve been lurking long enough not to be scared. :)
A true conoisseur then ;)
Mine’s ‘ropey’ sometimes too, but that’s half the fun I suspect..
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
But you HAVE other languages, so I'm impressed...
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
Ah well...
We have to start French really young, and then German was part of my university studies. I’m not really properly fluent in either though.
Australian here... we try, but many like me are indifferent at languages,
in spite having studied them..
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
Frankly, most Canadians are pretty dire
when it comes to language skills, despite being an officially bilingual country. Unless your parents are immigrants who speak something else at home, or you work in government or a few actually mixed areas, speaking more than one language decently is a little strange.
Ditto without of course being a bilingual country ...
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
Ha, well, we can’t all be as advanced as the Dutch. :) I’m just trying to make clear that my interest in Franzoi’s career trajectory is innocent.
Have you ever been in a hottitude thread?
I take my point ;)
What do you fear most?
1. coup d’etat
2. putsch
You simply must take part in the next one!
Now tell me, do you like Benna, or like some here (cough), do you think his eyes are too close together?

Albertina! Behave... :)
I was initially in your camp re. Benna. I’m thinking that the ‘lanche’ meant I was overexposed

Me? Misbehave? Never! ;)

Now who is whistling innocently?
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
Whistling in the office may attract attention.
I am sitting in stony and diligent silence.

Blink occasionally to avoid suspicion..
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
And don't forget to beam manically
at anyone approaching with an enquiry ;-)
I'm in my office all day today.
The customers are at a safe distance. No beaming needed ;)

twist my arm...
Oh God, the pressure. Let’s say I think he’s very pretty but is not quite my type somehow.
I'm declaring for Fabian. And you? ;)
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
Ah, a woman of discernment ;)
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
Humph.
Boonen? Nicolas Portal? Capecchi? Quinziato? INTXAUSTI?

Boonen's face, but not his hair, Quinziato's eyes
but Tony is the complete package :)

Boonen with a hat on?

Yep ... that's why I said face
to my shame. Superficial doesn’t begin to describe it :(
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
Oh me too...
I love Basso’s eyes but he’s too thin ;-)

I'm pretty scrawny myself ...
but short and twig-like just doesn’t float my boat. But nice eyes sre always aesthetically pleasing :)

I like a little bit of muscle upon the whole...

Much more admirable...
although I often think that I’d have made a great little mountains rider in a different age with a different gender :)

When this doesn't appear to make sense,
know that i misread it as you being muscular … at least there was nothing about hair here :(

Hair...aargh, NEVER bring it up while Frinkster is about!

No thanks.
You can keep him, with or without hats – or indeed any other form of attire. Boonen is another case of “Lou just doesn’t get it” :-)
You are as constant as the North Star ...
Tony’s head and shoulders above the rest, but Tom at least won’t break … physically at least ;)
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
Oh I'm not quite that constant ;-)
Bertogliati has his moments. As does Thor (especially when he speaks…. nyyyuggghhh…). But you’re right… I would not notice them, if they were standing next to Tony ;-)
I'll have to check out Bertogliati...
Thor needs a hat too, but you know I’ve thought about this a bit through various threads here and realised there’s lots of guys I’d love to have a beer with but Tony’s the only one that would increase my heartbeat :)

No, Thor does not need a hat. If he were bald, he would still radiate a certain…
Glare... is the word you're looking for :)
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
Glare?
No, that’s a look infused with confidence and determination. (And frankly… he can carry me off in his longship, any time he feels like raiding these shores…)
LOL! I was talking about his forehead,
not his twinkly eyes. =)

Definitely Boonen, I think his was the first hottitude I ever noticed in the peloton. Actually I seem to be quite into blonds generally these days – Boasson Hagan and Niels Albert (hey, topical!) are definitely on my list as well. Portal, mais oui – Sky is going to be nice eye candy. Capecchi is so beautiful it kind of hurts to look at him – I think almost too pretty to be hot. Likewise Quinziato. And I’m afraid I’m not really up to date on the Basques. hides
Not being up to date on Basques is music to Albertina's ears
because now she can provide links. Always very helpful.

You have good taste ;-) Boonen was my first cycling love for sure.
Niels Albert…oh yes, my very topical winter crush! I think I may faint if I meet him in Koksijde. Another way to find me may be to listen out for a girl squeaking “Niiiieeeeels!!!!” You have no idea how happy I was when I read that Portal was carrying on next year after all that business with his heart condition. Soooooo hot, even in his team mugshot!

I believe that’s Step 2 of the Hottitude Awareness Progression (male appreciation edition).
Step 1: “Hey, look at those guys in Lycra—I think I’ll watch for a while.”
Step 2: “Wow, that Boonen dude sure is hot.”
Step 3: “But you know, not as hot as ______ (fill in blank according to preference).”
Things kind of diverge from there, but the first three steps are generally believed to be universal.
It was just a long race--Edvald Boasson Hagen, on the Giro
Showing my age here, but George was my first 'crush'
and Boonen seemed too pretty. In early days I was a bit more one-eyed too … he was Robbie McEwen’s main competition.
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
Haha, true!
I still like Tom though, and remind myself of his hottitude on a regular basis. I’ve just ordered the 2009 P-R on DVD which I feel will be a useful visual reminder ;-)

Isn't Boonen everyone's first cycling love? :)
I think I’ve got to rep the Czech Rep. and use my limited Czech vocab to cheer for Zdenek “always the bridesmaid” Stybar but a “Niiieeellss!!!” or two might slip out. I’m sure anyway that he’ll be glad for your support – you might save him from a career change, the poor darling. :)
You know someone’s good looking when they even look good in the mugshot.
Niels won't change career just yet.
The poor darling got a bit angry in the heat of the moment but I’m sure he’s seen sense. If he does feel tempted I’m sure I can use my powers of persuasion ;-) Perhaps a large banner….“Niels: we love you and you belong wherever there’s mud!” or something like that ;) Stybar I also like, but not as much as Niels!

Hee
I’d sign it. I can’t imagine he’ll actually make the switch anytime soon, it would just be wrong. Ah well, he may get a bit cranky sometimes, but at least it’s not on twitter. :)
Stybar just strikes me as such a normal guy. And I love his Czech accented Dutch.
I'm also a 20 something female and am always up for drinks, especially of the Belgian variety...
…but I’m kind of unsure of how the day may pan out. My friend is there working rather than being an idle spectator and as we’re going back to England the same night there won’t be much time to hang around. There may also be a couple of other people coming that I don’t know and I have no idea what they might wish to do…getting separated in such a large crowd might be problematic if we’re ever to make it back in one piece…!

Aha, fair enough. I’m going alone due to circumstances (the circumstances being related to both travel plans and a shocking reluctance of friends to stand around in Flanders in November watching people on bikes) so I’m pretty flexible, but I also can’t hang around in the evening. I see that you’ve got an e-mail in your profile, so I’ll send you my mobile number, and you can always send me an SMS or give me a call on the spot when you know what’s up. If it’s too complicated, as I said before, no worries, getting back in one piece is important. :)
Yes, of course feel free to drop me an email.
We’ll see how things go…I might find that he’s off running about with his tripod and I end up rather lonely! I know what you mean about friends not wanting to stand around in Flanders in the winter. Most of my friends would be horrified at the thought, and I’ve had this problem in the past…I almost went to Alpe d’Huez on my own a couple of years ago but finally found someone willing ;) Where are you from?

Done. :)
Saddest would be if we both end up lonely. :) If it was local I could probably drag my roommate along since she’s a journalism student always in need of new action/editorial shots for school. I’m Canadian, but I’m in the Czech Republic for a term, but I’m going to Germany for some thesis research, and then I thought, hey, Belgium is only a few hours away… it makes sense when you think on a North American scale of distance. Almost.
I see!
So will you be in the Czech Rep for the Cross World Champs or will you be home by then?

Sadly I’ll be home by then. Stupid North American school year. I was originally going to go to the WC round in Plzen, but it’s actually a huge pain to get there from where I’m living.
Oh bah. That's sad :-(

That's what I hear
but knowing my track record I’ll end up being harrangued by some crazy elderly man in a flat cap who speaks no English!
No eye contact 'til you've listened a while!
Your famous North American manners won’t serve you well here. Keep your fingers cossed that it’s not a bunch of drunken Aussies. (Well my fingers are crossed anyway).

Drunken Flemish types can be amusing though.
And drunken Basques are fun.

Heh
This is my second around time in Europe, so I’ve just about managed to wipe out warm smile as my default facial expression, but I’m still working on improving my directness and getting over feeling the need to listen politely to everyone including random strangers. :)
I’d have to laugh if there were drunken Aussies – someone from even farther away than me – now that’s true insanity, er, dedication.
Insane for an Australian is being somewhere wet and cold watching cross
… although it makes the drinking more important. Winter in Europe was fascinating but a pain in many ways. So much more stuff needed than those three summer months swanning round Greece :)
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
Any excuse to put on the beer jacket...
Winter in most parts of Europe isn’t real winter in my books though. They have the Gulf Stream. The Christmas markets are outside! Doesn’t stop me complaining about the weather, of course….
Yes the weather here can really suck but
The beer is good, especially in Belgium. Where will you be in Germany? I live in the Eifel region myself, near Trier.
If I just had one more gear, I...
Ah the beer. Just not the same at home!
Mostly I’ll be in Dresden, but I’m going to spend a day or two in Aachen and/or Koeln before heading on to Flanders. I wish I had more time and money, I’ve hardly seen any of western Germany, only the very south-west when I studied in Freiburg. And Frankfurt (hate that airport!). I’ve always thought the Mosel region would be worth a visit – wine, ruins, and maybe a bit of the Benelux vibe.
Are you German, or an expat?
Yep
But I wish I was going to be in Flanders watching cross.
I mean uh... hasn't that ever occurred to you, man? Sir?
It's done
Didn’t you see my post in the thread?

"If I were World Road Race Champion, I would wear black shorts. That probably has more to do with me being on the wiser side of 30 and understanding better that the decisions I make now never really go away. White shorts would not be something I'd be proud of...." - David Millar, in Rouleur.

I'm still an apprentice but I'm doing ok, no? ;)

I'm American as they come
The Eifel borders Belgium and Luxemburg, so we are right there. Good beer is a short drive away. The Eifel/Ardennes are the same region, just divided by national boundaries.
If I just had one more gear, I...
There will be drunken Aussies
There always is.
(Whether they are out in force is another matter)
