RR Stripes in the TT?

Pezcyclingnews.com

Check out the third picture in Pelo Pics, the one with Big Mig passing Lance. Was the RR World Champ allowed to sport their stripes in the TT?

Ok, I will..

Hmmm, interesting. It wasn’t until about that time that I actually took notice of the TT Champ. having his own jersey. Someone with more time would have to dig through the WC Rulebook to pull out uniform changes over time.

Good catch. This is egg-ZACT-ly the kind of off season banter I enjoy. Unfortunately, I don’t have time to research this myself.

I believe that this was allowed until 2002 or so.

Actually, the first time I personally remember it was when A. Olano won it in 1995.

Here’s a quick google photo I found (courtesy of Giant Tours).

UCI rule book
1.3.064
When he no longer holds the title of world champion, a rider may wear rainbow piping on the collar and cuffs of his jersey as per the technical specifications in the brochure which will be sent to him by the UCI. However, he may wear such a jersey only in events of the discipline, speciality and category in which he won the title and in no other event.

Soooo...

we’re saying in 2004 the World TT Champ. did NOT wear a Rainbow jersey in TT’s? I honestly don’t remember that. Who won in ’04? Mick Rogers?

TT champ wore them in TT only after these rulings.

Could be, yes I think so

but the rule I quoted was only about the piping (the bands on the sleeves). There is also:

1.3.063
Until the day before the world championship of the following year, the world champions must wear their jersey in all events in the discipline, speciality and category in which they won their title, and in no other event. For the purpose of this rule, the team time trial is put on a par with the individual time trial. In six-day races, only madison world champions may wear the jersey, even if they are not paired together.

jersey

There was no TT world championship then so the world champion road champion was the champion period.

Basically there was no tt world campionship road race in 1993 as the first one was after the TDF.

How do I get mixed up in these things?

Best I can recollect, back in the good old days (between 1994 and about 2004)
if you were a WC you could wear the stripes in any race you wanted to, but at some point in the early to mid ’00’s the rules changed and from that point on, one could only wear the stripes when participating in the disciple in which the stripes were one. This does not apple to the stripes on the armband and collar (as best as I can tell).

That sums up the original post...

we’re just trying to figure out the FIRST year the TT Champ wore them in TT’s and not the Road Champ. Based on the evidence here (which is essentially fuzzy memories and conjecture), I think it was 2005. I’m too lazy to actually look it up…but apparently I’m not too lazy to keep speculating in this thread ;-)

We're closing in on it.

But I think it was before 2005 (per my original reply). I’d say it was ’03 or so.

that sounds about right to me

I remember Brad McGee and the other Aussies with a track background having rainbow piping about then, and then like that! It was gone.
