US-centric: post-Thanksgiving rides

In the greater Dallas/Fort Worth area are many day-after Thanksgiving rides, but none of them have quite the appeal of Mike Reade's excursions around the obscure roads of Hood and Somervell counties.

The main draw for some of us is the 9 mile stretch of jeep-track (which somehow is still designated as a county road).  There are a couple of biggish hills, a water-crossing or two and . . . the llama.

Some years it just stares at you.  Other years it decides to chase you.  Most years it decides to chase somebody.

Anyway . . . any other post-thanksgiving traditional rides out there?

Gun Deer Hunting season up here!

There might be an urban ride (likely is) but in Wisconsin this is gun deer season, there are literally 100’s of thousands of people out with fairly high powered rifles this Friday looking for deer to shoot. People even out for walks wear orange in the country. Often there is snow, too, but I would guess half the years not. Still long country riders better be wearing all orange. Wisconsin cyclocross championship in Milwaukee area this Sunday though.

Not post, but day-of Thanksgiving ride.

And nothing as fun as a 9 mile stretch of jeep trail.

But I’m super stoked to see my favorite RR back on the calendar for next season, the classic Perry-Roubaix in Perry,GA. An 11 mile loop with 3km of busted up Georgia red clay road and some nasty diggers. I remember my first time doing that race and laughing as we started to go off road thinking “Are you kidding me”.

No horn, watch for finger.

We're still in the midst of cross season so

it’s usually a training ride Thursday morning or a pre-race ride on Friday before the weekend races start in earnest.

I mean uh... hasn't that ever occurred to you, man? Sir?

I don't know about the day after Turkey Day rides

Or rides on Turkey day for that matter, but there was always the Turkey Trot, aka the Thanksgiving Cross Country Classic, a 5k run through Reid Park in the middle of town. The day after Thanksgiving was usually just an easy spin through the desert. Of course now I’m in Germany and looks like snow the end of this week, so no ride for me.

If I just had one more gear, I...
