Twitter Roundup
Rather than simply quoting from a single First-Person Nugget of Wisdom, I thought I would add a few brief observations:
- On Twitter, not a day goes by when Bradley Wiggins doesn't transfer to Sky. But like a good wacky sitcom, the plot goes awry and the characters inevitably wind up back where they started... setting the stage for another day of madness.
- A new item for the PdC Lexicon, from our good friends at Rabo Sport: Smaakmaker. Can you use it in a sentence? I'll start: "Philippe Gilbert was de Smaakmaker in Lombardia this year."
- From the wires: Christian Pfannberger's pro cycling career has earned a death sentence. Tough times for Austrian cycling fans.

Smaakmaker
Pesky Dutch brigade here. Your example sentence was gramatically correct. But thinking back to Lombardia this year I wouldn’t qualify Gilbert as the Smaakmaker. I’d say Hoogerland was a smaakmaker. He spiced up the race (that’s an English equivalent of Smaakmaker) with his breakaway before the finale. Sure, Gilbert was phenomenal in the finale but that part is always spicy. Smaakmakers don’t usually win the race. In common use it is something of a consolation prize. You didn’t win but you were the Smaakmaker. Gesink was definitely a smaakmaker in the Vuela.
It’s similar to the “most aggressive rider”. At least, that’s how I would use the term and how I interpret it when I encounter is somewhere.

OK
but you guys realize that the actual translation is only of marginal interest. The point is to create “Englutch” using Dutch words in accordance with what sounds cool in English.
That said, the actual Dutch word is almost as cool.

But I agree with Chris. It isn’t about the real meaning ni Dutch. Its about us using it the way it sounds in English.

Air conditioning is a necessity I would think
if you’re in western Sydney, which I’m thinking you must be. It’s not very green, but having had years in one horse towns where you drank (a lot!) and then went home to do a face plant on the bed, I’m thinking that it’s the lesser of two evils. If i could only convince you that the coast is the answer ;)

West-ish
Burwood.
Death before aircon! Never mind the ‘green’ thing… my concerns are more to do with unecessary load on the network – and more importantly, the impact on my power bill, LOL. I am seriously considering a swamp cooler, though… they’re pretty effective for only a couple of hundred watts ;-)

I'm wondering if he wasted too much energy on the last lap
He was trying hard to ditch everyone and didn’t have his usual kick at the line. Looking back at the sprint he doesn’t look as powerful there as usual, but during the entire lap he was not afraid to attack. Sven seems to think he didn’t recover enough for the sprint either.
