Garmin Sponsors Up for 2010

Adios Team Slipstream...Vaughters and co have replaced their original identity completely today, with the addition of Transitions Eyewear as the secondary sponsor of Team Garmin-Transitions. Transitions makes rather clever sounding lenses which change tint with the weather. Does it sound sorta grandpa? Sure, but this long-standing technology can now fit into some stylish frames (all of what you see on the site look straight out of the Vaughters Collection). JV does a nice job of claiming the lenses will give the team an advantage in races like the classics where conditions change rapidly. Can't hurt, I guess. And the real bottom line is, it's always great to see more sponsors come into the sport. So welcome to Cycling, Transitions.

Agreed

Very nice to see a new sponsor on board

Good on them for grabbing another good sponsor

As for the glasses, though, they’re not as unique as Vaughters’ marketing talk implies. Specialized has been making lenses like that for several years…

Shimano also sells sunnies w/ "photochromic" lenses

I don’t think it’s marketed as a unique feature by Transitions, though. Specifically: “Transitions Optical is […] offering the most advanced photochromic technology” acknowledges it exists elsewhere.

Transitions lenses have been around for a long time in the prescription eyeglass world

I suspect in the world of contact lenses, lasic surgery and all, eyeglass manufacturers need exposure like everyone else.

Love my rx transitions lenses

Made custom for Rudy Project frames (in my super-myopic case) by Sports Optical in Denver . . .

by R Mc on Nov 27, 2009 7:52 PM EST up reply actions

Love mine too

(in specialized glasses – hence my one-sided knowledge…)

by Douglas Ansel on Nov 27, 2009 8:32 PM EST up reply actions

Yep.

Mine are in my normal frames, but they’re really good. The only bummer is that they don’t react well behind polarized car windshields. So not great for driving glasses.

"Does it sound sorta grandpa?"

Pshah! This stuff is so the future. Just wait til we’re all wearing Joo Janta 200 Super-Chromatic Peril Sensitive Sunglasses.

Talking about Garmin Edge specs,

(har har) does anybody know how many GPS points the new Edge 500 records per second (or per minute) and in total? It doesn’t say on the spec page at garmin.com, only that ANT+ power data will be recorded at approx. 1 per second.

No doubt hype

think about it, they’re losing Wiggins to Team Sky, they need to send out some positive PR to minimize the egg on their face…

We lost a Tour contender

but lookie here, we’ve got snazzy new bifocals?

Nah, those two stories hardly merit mention in the same context.

by Jens on Nov 28, 2009 4:02 PM EST up reply actions

i agree

that the stories don’t have the same weight, but what else could they put out there with a positive spin.

by rowyco on Nov 30, 2009 10:35 AM EST up reply actions

Not sure I follow

Since when is acquiring a new title sponsor spin? That’s fab news all the way around for a team. Of course, they’re going to announce it. No need to come up with an excuse or underlying motive here.

by Jen See on Nov 30, 2009 11:43 AM EST up reply actions

okay, it's not spin

it’s just a happy moment before the they annouce losing the team’s “revelation” of the 2009 tour to team sky…okay, so it’s not a done deal yet, but i give it 99.991% chance of happening in the very near future. :)

wait have they lost him yet

or is it still urban myth? Like the Contador nonissue I’m losing interest in where BW rides next year. May even drop him from my twitter feed.

Noooo...

Anyone riding behind Fränk Schleck on a descent has a ’roo infestation in their top paddock. Or is on a motorcycle, with camera at the ready…

A frozen 'cross ride from this last weekend. As you may be aware we have had siberian conditions here in the UK with a low of -14 degrees centigrade here on saturday morning. It was a beautiful sunny morning so i layered up and set off for a snowy 'cross ride along a roman road. I checked the thermometer when i got back to find it had been -10 throughout the ride! I had a lot of fun though and the views were spectacular.
