Anything citrus... but I'm a sucker for lemon meringue :)

What a dilemma. I can't vote again :(

I’m thinking Drongo and the Figurehead will be upset about the fact that pie floaters don’t rate a mention.

I got your back Seahorse

Someone had to vote for lemon Meringue!

But only if we are talking the home made variety, that has real meringue on top and not so faux whipped white confectionery (as I seem to keep stumbling into here in the USA)…

Couldn't agree more ...

Cooking blueberries seems strange to me too, but ‘faux whipped’ is more of a travesty.

Yeah

Where’s the pie floater option?! I sense a strong anti-antipodean bias in this poll…

by Lou... on Nov 29, 2009 2:57 PM EST up reply actions

Well, the ignominy continues

I voted ‘floater pie’, whatever that is, since I think it’s meant to represent the unique deliciousness that is the pie floater.

I have decided that it’s time to bust out some pie floater action at home. To hell with it being summer and all; this week there’ll be pie floater in the Drongopolis.

by Drongo on Nov 29, 2009 11:49 PM EST up reply actions

They sort of look like 'floater pies' though, don't they?

I've been doing some research

Apparently, you get them at a place in New York that looks like my idea of heaven. Which means that some our American friends can share the love.

And there’s a learned discussion of the pie floater’s history here.

Please keep your VB but send us your Pavs

My Aussie ex-pat neighbor gave me a case of that stuff. Not good. But his wife made me a Pav, so I forgave him. And hash browns are fried shredded potatoes. Surely these exist in upside-down land?

Great stuff, banoffee pie.

Scary preparation, though. You’re supposed to boil an unopened can of sweetened condensed milk for 3 hours. If it doesn’t explode, it makes the best toffee in the world.

I'd go with that

but where on earth did this bizarre idea of adding strawberries come from??

by civetta on Nov 30, 2009 4:10 PM EST up reply actions

Yes, they are in season at the same time.

Sheesh. Cityfolk.

To answer civetta, rhubarb is inedibly tart without a lot of sugar. Real strawberries are very sweet. It’s thrifty to make strawberry-rhubarb pie because it cuts the amount of sugar needed. So what does rhubarb do for strawberries? Strawberries get terribly mushy when cooked, while rhubarb stalks stay firm, adding texture and helping the pie keep its shape. Symbiosis!

It was just a long race--Edvald Boasson Hagen, on the Giro

by majope on Nov 30, 2009 8:20 PM EST up reply actions

Where to begin? ;-)

1. Rhubarb (at its best, March/April) and strawberries (at their best, summer) are not remotely in season at the same time.
2. Rhubarb is by no means inedibly tart without lots of sugar.
3. If cooked properly, rhubarb should ‘fall’ & not stay firm at all.
4. Having grown up in the vicinity of the Rhubarb Triangle so I should know.
5. Rhubarb, traditionally, is an urban or semi-urban rather than a rural crop.
6. Crumble is of course best but pie is nice.
7. Cooked strawberries are an abomination.

There. ;-)

by civetta on Dec 2, 2009 9:56 AM EST up reply actions

LOL

Mostly opinion and geographical differences—although #5 seems odd to me, even in your part of the world. Rhubarb is most definitely not urban over here. Where does it grow? Parks? Abandoned lots?

My apologies for taking your question even a little bit seriously. :-)

So much of it grew wild where I'm from (Adirondacks) that the idea of cultivating it seems odd.

It would be like growing buttercups or milkweed. But now that I think of it, the patch by our neighbor’s barn might have been put there on purpose. Never occurred to me to ask.

by majope on Dec 2, 2009 11:31 AM EST up reply actions

I agree with all of that

apart from the growing up near the Rhubarb Triangle bit. And by fall I guess you mean go a bit mushy. And crumble is best because you don’t need to add any sugar to the rhubarb at all.

Sounds good!

A bit similar to the Midwest’s sugar cream pie—the main difference seems to be the sugar, but both fall under the category “pies to have when you don’t have anything to put in a pie.”
