2010 Versus TV Schedule
On a whim, I went to the Versus website to see if they've announced their race schedule for next year. They have!
The unexpected highlight here is the Tour of Philadelphia on June 6th. Nice.
Other highlights are every day of three stage races: Down Under (Jan 19-24), California (May16-23) and France (July 3-25)
Lowlights: nothing from Italy or Spain. No Flanders or Amstel Gold either. No Missouri in on the list either so I wonder if this is a finalized schedule. Either that or they want to see if Lance participates this year. No Ireland either.
Otherwise you have an hour of the following one day races: Paris-Roubaix (4/11), and Liege-Bastogne-Liege and Fleche Wallone (both 4/25, so La Fleche is once again a few days late).
You also get hour highlights for Paris-Nice (3/7 & 14), Criterium International (3/28), Romandie (5/2), Dauphine (6/6 & 13), and Suisse (6/13 & 20)
Seems like Versus strips down their coverage little more stripped down every year. Possibly they'll add a race or two IF Lance races it.
I checked CTV and Universal to see if their schedules are up in any form, fictitious or otherwise: not yet.

Versus..BAH!
I’m optimistic universalsports continues to get even more races next year. They have a deal with the RCS so MSR and T-A maybe? Hopefully free of course and hopefully they will start broadcasting it live on their TV network.
Look, it's a bird...no, it's a plane....oh never mind it's just fucking balloon boy
Bah...I want to reject this and vote for the Sporza, RAI, Eurosport, anything European package
I just hope that Universal does not start charging for coverage…
I hear you, but
the Universal coverage I’ve seen in the past has been so flawless that I’d pay for it if they did. Ctv is always a cross your fingers and hope deal.
I mean uh... hasn't that ever occurred to you, man? Sir?
I wish...
someone would come up with a way to subscribe to video feed from around the world. That would make me happy. I would pay for reliable Sporza and RAI access, no question.
(vigorously nodding)
Belgium Channel 4 hooked me up wonderfully yesterday for the Superprestige race. Not a shudder or flicker to be seen in the entire hour. How come CTV can’t pull that off?
Unfortunately Universal doesn’t have any cross coverage scheduled like they did last year, so I’ll have to continue depending on the kindness of strangers.
I mean uh... hasn't that ever occurred to you, man? Sir?
Nothing like hatred with the fire of a thousand suns to get one motivated!
Jens-is this just hatred of Drew or are we all included?
No worries
Sporza has been taking care of me the last few weeks, Jens. I know that’s a big relief for you to hear.
(He’s still pissed about the Editor’s League results)
I mean uh... hasn't that ever occurred to you, man? Sir?
I have formed an unholy alliance with CTV-Rold to deny you of any and all coverage.
That man harbours an un-parallelled bitterness toward the world.
Just you wait. My connections at Sporza are op de hoek. You’ll be back to watching your Richard Virenque-DVDs on Sundays very soon.
based on the 2009 universal sports coverage, it will have several races
pais vasco — hopefully with commentary this year
giro (hello matt keenan, or maybe they’ll hire ant and brian?)
tour of missouri (if it happens)
vuelta
worlds (most likely the live stream w/o commentary, like this year; and the 2hr edited tv editions)
here’s hoping that maybe versus will live stream the TOC as well as the TDF

But Lance doesn't ride the Giro..
Stupid commercial/kapitaism broadcasters and Baaah stupid Lancemaniac.. Baaaaah.
But I will get most coverage so I must not complain. The TDU maybe not
What do you fear most?
1. coup d’etat
2. putsch
Essentially no-one gets the TDU, so we'll miss the Lance mania
That avatar is worthy of a competition. It’s driving me nuts… will the syntax be similar to English? Aargh!

LOL ... but is this the name of a cyclist too?
Frinking’s saying his avatar is a cyclist’s name :(

Haha nice find.. But no.. It's not that..
It’s indeed a rider of one of my favorites :)
What do you fear most?
1. coup d’etat
2. putsch
I'm so not going to help you with this very easy puzzle..
What do you fear most?
1. coup d’etat
2. putsch
According to your profile
your favorite cyclists are
Pineau, Vino!, Nieve, Cataldo, Breschel, Langeveld, Anton, Vogondy, Uran, Basso Samsan, Gesink and Voeckleur
Not getting any of those from the glyphs. Maybe I just don’t think in Frinkingese.
It was just a long race--Edvald Boasson Hagen, on the Giro
Maybe I was one step ahead and I removed him from that list... :)
Yesterday when Seahorse was asking…
What do you fear most?
1. coup d’etat
2. putsch
Given the scarcity of cycling news at the moment, this is worthy of its own post...
I’m still suspicious about the syntax…
"How strange it was to see men doing something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant." Tim Winton, 'Breath'
That's as confusing as your avatar..
BTW, I have to commend you for being in touch with your feminine side. Hearts and suns….

what the hell does lance not riding the giro have to do with universal sports coverage?
tdu coverage is usually ftv from ctv, or it has been the past few years

Universal Sports is wonderful
I’m a figure skating fan as well, and they’ve had great coverage this year. Events we haven’t seen in years, and complete coverage that we’ve never gotten before. Plus they covered Gymnastics nationals and worlds with wonderful coverage. Add in the Giro and the Vuelta, and you’ve got one of my absolute fave networks.
However, I know a lot of people don’t get the channel, so I’m glad VS continues to cover cycling as well, including the TdF. The more coverage, the better.
don't forget curling...

I would totally watch that.

You're SOL though
if your provider is not Comcast. They have some kind of stranglehold on both Versus and Universal sports, so if you have say, DirecTV like we do, and Comcast isn’t offered in your area like where we live, you’re SOL if you want to see cycling on TV in 2010.
I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in.
I feel for you.
I have DISH: no Universal TV but at least I can get that on the web and they have Versus.
I am glad someone has Philly.
universal sport tv channels are dependent on the local market, not something comcast does
during september of this year, DirecTV (dtv) had universal sports on for me, but only for the month because of the vuelta. my local channel market is richmond, va, and that is not a local market for universal sports (but, dc is).
with dish network, if you have the right receiver, you can get raiITALIA, which includes rai-international, so that gets you the giro coverage (which took until the last day before the 2009 giro to say they were showing the giro). it would be nice if rai-international went back to showing MSR and TA, as well as those other small pro and amateur races like they did before.
dish network also has a french package, that you can get tv5monde a la carte, and it showed a 2hr tdf highliught package daily.
unfortunately, dish network has the exclusive rights to the dth (direct-to-home) for those italian and french language channels. sorta like how dtv has the exclusive rights to the major sports packages (center ice, nfl ticket, full court, etc).
it looks like i’ll be upgrading my basic dish network receiver to their low-end dvr unit, and then getting the high-end program package (the only one for versus) for may thru july…..
i still can’t stand dish…. much prefer dtv….
what one does for one’s cycling addicition…

Dunno about DTV being better than DISH (I haven’t looked lately) but your line above is what its all about. (That and the hokey pokey.)

Luckily
You won’t be relying on them for coverage of the event this year.
Tickets are bought, Belgium here I come!
True

add things might be even more fun next year, now that comcast is about to acquire NBC-Universal

I Suspect...
The “Tour of Philadelphia” is actually the “International Championship” (sponsor to be determined).
I was hopeful that the promise of a “national network broadcast” for this race in 2010 would mean something along the lines of ABC, NBC, ESPN, etc., but that will not be the case.
I still run into people who say the only time they’ve seen pro cycling on TV was two years ago when the US Open was broadcast for two-and-a-half hours (opposite the Masters golf tournament) on NBC. Whatever that broadcast cost, the money was well spent.

I recall last year when Versus fans were whining about not covering the Giro with Lance riding in it...
… Versus explained that some races—the Giro in particular—are competitively bid for, with Versus not winning the bid for the Giro. They said they hoped to cover it in the future, but they couldn’t get the bid for the next few years.
There are lots of reasons why a network will or won’t cover a race. It’s all about money, of course, but it also has to do with exclusive rights, and such.
It’s probably a good thing that we have more than one network competing for cycling race coverage. Better than total disinterest, as we had in the USA in the pre-Lance years. I just hope that when Lance finally retires—for good—that TV coverage won’t retire.
As for my personal experience, I have Time Warner cable. Versus is on there for good, as far as I can tell. Unfortunately, they do not carry Universal Sports, even as an option, for which I would happily pay extra. At least not in my area.
ya know, it's still 2009.... when i see "last year" i think 2008.... geez, like time needs to go any faster

Green is Universal
Probably won’t effect the 2010 season, but the television landscape for cycling could signifigantly change if GE goes ahead with their sale of NBCUniversal to Comcast. That would put Versus (a Comcast channel) under the same corporate umbrella as Universal Sports. Comcast is also planning a cable channel with the US Olympic Committee that would rival Universal Sports.
I will be interresting to see how the potential merger would affect carriage agreements, such as the snag DirecTV has hit with Versus. Don’t fogret, DirecTV’s one-month free trial of Universal Sports conveniently coincided with the dropping of Versus from their channel lineup.
Either way, I’d imagine that Comcast would choose only one of the cable platforms to air all of their cycling coverage.
uh, see my post above, the sale is final
"Wizard's first rule. People are stupid. They will believe anything they want to be true or fear to be true." -- Terry Goodkind
Sorry...missed your first post going through the replies...
…but the sale isn’t quite final yet. GE’s reached an agreement with Vivendi to buy out the remaning 20% of NBCU from the initial sale of Universal. That would clear the way for CG to sell 51% of NBCU to Comcast, pending FCC approval. Given the massive conglomerate the the merger would create, the regulatory process may make the Contado-Astana dealings seem like a bunch sprint.
well, yay then... cause i'm all for comcast getting slammed
