This just seems like bad news waiting to happen. If he is going to try to take both of them seriously then come Tour time, it might not be good.

You beat me to it. I agree totally...

I would assume Ballan will be there too.

Good idea for Cadel...

just like it was a good idea for Menchov and Levi to take a shot at the Giro last year.

If he decides he has to tilt at the Contador and Schleck windmills in the Tour, he can always back off and ride the Giro the way Garmin does.

I guess this means he has to back off in the Ardennes though…

I'm thinking that BMC need him at the Giro

to prove their worth for the Tour (I know the teams for the Tour should be announced before the Giro, but just the fact that they’ve announced he’s riding the Giro would help emphasize that the team has the capability to race a GT). Plus, Evans probably wants to ensure that he gets into at least one GT this year with the Tour not a certainty.

by guidemd on Dec 15, 2009 11:09 AM EST reply actions

Do you think he's slighting you?

Isn’t it more about what his teams have decided he’s doing?

You're probably right.

Now that he’s on an American team—at least partly American—perhaps he’ll be around the states more often. Perhaps Missouri.

Should be fun!

There’s a good course for this year’s Giro and increasingly, a good start list. Yay!

by Jen See on Dec 15, 2009 12:06 PM EST reply actions

Oh I hope Cadel takes it seriously so much.

I think he’s dogged enough to hang on. And can you imagine the sight of Cuddles and Menchov trying to out-disel each other for the Maglia Rosa while our Ratsnake tries to find the juice he once had? Ooooh, I’m excited.

Is this first time for Ratsnake?

Or did I miss this somewhere else? Either way I’m going with this one.

Yay, the more riders the better for the Giro

who knows, he may be able to race both at a high level unlike Sastre and Menchov, but even if not, he has a far better chance to win the Giro then Tour. And winning a GT has got to be better then finishing 3rd or 2nd again, take your chances Cadel!

Becoming a little more Italian?

His ties to Italy are getting stronger and I do think he might have good feelings after the worlds. It definitely makes the Giro more interesting, and in an odd way might help someone like Basso. He will now have a worthy elite group to gauge himself against and become part of.

by Markk on Dec 15, 2009 1:52 PM EST reply actions

I hop eCadel takes it seriously, too

As much as I’d pull for him, I don’t think he’d have a great shot at winning the TDF. THe Giro is his realistic chance at winning a GT.

maybe BMC potentially getting snubbed could be the best thing to ever happen to Cadel

If denied a shot at a TdF he has little chance of winning, he could do the Giro/Vuelta double. He has shown he is not far off from beating just about anyone he’d face in Spain, and looks good even in a climby Giro course. I wonder what the Vuelta route looks like (and what Sastre will opt to do, he could be trouble for Cadel in the Giro)…

We may find ourselves living in a world where Cadel wins two GTs and a WC RR in a twelve month span… seems like the beginning of the next Roland Emmerich film.

Oh it's on Vlandy, you don't go bashing my route announcement excitment

which mountains, what type of TT’s, how many important stages and where are they placed? These type of riveting questions will be answered in the epicness that is the Vuelta route announcement. So you snicker all you want, but it is I that will get the last laugh!

I like it

Maybe last year helped him realise that the Tour is not the be all and end all. Especially with Bert and Andy not looking like they’re going to slow down any time soon. I really hope he goes for the win in the Giro, and then has something left in July to compete as well (for the podium at least).

When did I become a Cuddles fan?

by celerity on Dec 15, 2009 6:05 PM EST reply actions

I think it was actually during the Tour last year

I wasn’t rooting for him to do well then, but when he did so poorly I felt so bad for him! I’ve always had a bit of thing for the underdog. And I liked that he showed a bit of spunk by trying to attack, even if it didn’t work out.

by celerity on Dec 15, 2009 6:47 PM EST up reply actions

My second favorite memory of Cadel this year

… is him working hard in the break on stage 19 in le Tour this year. He actually got out of the peleton :-)

My take on a perfect season for Cadel, by Hons

Ardennes then Giro followed by a non-invite to the tour forcing him to do the late season N. America circuit…Missouri followed by Quebec and Montreal one-day races…

But that’s me being selfish. And yeah…when did I become a cadel fan?

O/T

so hoping that the Quebec and Montreal one-day races are a success and stick around long enough on the calendar such that I can find someone to fill in for me and get there to watch them one of these years (September is the one time of year I can’t take time off unless I have someone to replace me :-( )

I wonder

What if *Lotto told him straight out, ’You’re not doing the Tout next year, boyo, it’s the Belgian feller this time. You have to go to the Giro.’ Remember they announced him as going to the Giro without asking him earlier this year, and he denied it and refused to go.

If that is the case, going to BMC, who already had a Giro invite when he signed and still might go to the Tour, is no loss cf. the *Lotto situation.

I think the Tour is still number 1 in Evans’ mind: he’s said that a few times. But I’d be surprised if he is counting on the Tour for his 2010 season. I reckon he still thinks of himself as young enough for 2011 if it comes to that, and if he can race in 2010, all the better. In the meantime, he might just win a Giro. It would be great if he did.

by Drongo on Dec 15, 2009 8:34 PM EST reply actions

2009 Giro

was a great chance for this kind of GC riders, and Menchov won it.
The thing with cuddles and Lotto…$#&@*^#(*#)
maybe he realized that was a mistake.
oh well, don’t think we’ll see another 60K TT in Italy any time soon. but of course still a better bet for him than le tour.

by rbjhan on Dec 15, 2009 9:00 PM EST up reply actions

The 60k TT this year would've been grand for Evans

He can go downhill better than Menchov, so I think he could have taken it had he been on form…

And he won’t lose very much time at all up Plan de Corones because he’s too stubborn to. I think he’s got a good chance to put that diesel to use this year…

I hope I didn’t put a *Lotto-esque curse on him.

I am in the camp that this is a great idea

Try and win the Giro …. worry about the TdF later (and not much chance with AC)

A frozen 'cross ride from this last weekend. As you may be aware we have had siberian conditions here in the UK with a low of -14 degrees centigrade here on saturday morning. It was a beautiful sunny morning so i layered up and set off for a snowy 'cross ride along a roman road. I checked the thermometer when i got back to find it had been -10 throughout the ride! I had a lot of fun though and the views were spectacular.
