Well not on this occasion.

But I am waiting for a pair of mtb shoes I ordered the other day. Can’t ride my cross bike without them so they’d better be here by Sunday or else!

Can the riders hear the Magnum PI theme music playing?

Cause if they can, that’s awesome.

Technically, the steel ball is supposed to be shot onto the course...

they won tonight's race but its accumulative each night too.

Sort of like winning a stage versus winning the entire TdF.

by ZoeRochelle on Dec 17, 2009 2:15 PM EST up reply actions

Instead of "Stand Up for the Champions"

they play the Flashdance song “I need a Hero” WTF?

by ZoeRochelle on Dec 17, 2009 2:14 PM EST reply actions

Last night a motorcycle performer crashed and damaged the track.

Took a big gouge out of it. They had to fix it with what looked like Bondo.

by ZoeRochelle on Dec 17, 2009 2:23 PM EST reply actions

i don't get it

Last night’s derny race had bars that went off the back of the motos so the rider couldn’t get right on the wheel. These do not. What’s the difference in races?

by PopUp Rolen on Dec 17, 2009 2:24 PM EST reply actions

In last night's race they were also riding unconventional bikes...

…a la 80’s pursuit bikes with small front wheels.

That was weird.

by Ed K on Dec 17, 2009 2:26 PM EST up reply actions

6 days are, afaik, NOT UCI races...

…tho I’m fairly sure all these riders have pro contracts at the UCI level too, and so are being tested.

Riders are paced behind the bike and then on the last lap, the derny

pulls off and it’s an all out sprint. Top speeds with the moto pacing make it a hot item to watch.

LOL. My understanding is that its about using your derny to slipstream and save

energy while getting very high speeds. Communication between driver and rider is crucial.

Perhaps related to the fact

that cycling in general isn’t doing so well in Germany these days?

by Krtek on Dec 17, 2009 2:58 PM EST up reply actions

Thanks to the German media overreacting...

…to the doping stuff more than any other national press corps.

Honestly, it’s as if they somehow thought that the whole history of the sport had been pure and clean and then the scales fell from their eyes all at once. Amazing how the return of the repressed really does get ugly, huh?

by Ed K on Dec 17, 2009 3:00 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, they've really beaten that drum for all it's worth.

It seems that the general policy now is to just ignore the existence of cycling, unless its a doping story. Interestingly, I’ve never seen anything bring up how many of the German pros of a certain generation came up through the DDR sports system, which seems like an intriguing (although admittedly perhaps not that significant) angle to me.

Too bad I haven’t been following the news too closely lately, I’d love to see how they’re handling the Pechstein case.

by Krtek on Dec 17, 2009 4:26 PM EST up reply actions

It gets better, the Argentinian rider is covering Jason Mraz.

This is quite possibly the greatest entertainment I’ve ever witnessed at mid-afternoon on a Thursday

by PopUp Rolen on Dec 17, 2009 2:47 PM EST up reply actions

I'm supposed to be studying for an exam

but frankly, when he stopped playing and started doing the overhead clap I decided that that was worth a couple points off my grade, if it comes to that.

by Krtek on Dec 17, 2009 2:49 PM EST up reply actions

Haha, thanks.

I doubt somehow he’d agree with me that this is providing a perspective on European culture as profound as anything we’ve studied in class, but I appreciate the offer all the same. :)

Risi is Ze Big Boss of 6-day cycling

I am not saying everything is fixed but there are definitely “pro crit” elements. Local suspects winning quite often. Risi always has his finger on the pulse.

by tedvdw on Dec 17, 2009 3:48 PM EST up reply actions

Aha, interesting.

I know next to nothing about track cycling and even less about 6 days specifically so this is all an education for me. I’d never actually heard of Risi until last month. :) (Article in one of the cycling mags I bought while in Flanders.) Not too shocking that there are “pro crit” elements given the general spectacle. And quite the spectacle it is. Although I have a horrible feeling I’m going to have “Zorba the Greek” stuck in my head tomorrow.

you missed Dan Holloway's Derney running out of gas when...

…he was leading, and him trying to win the rice solo for like 5 laps. Didn’t work, but it was a valiant effort.

They race 220 laps. each team has 2 riders. One is on the inside racing, the other resting.

They change riders with an arm sling to give the fresh rider momentum. Every 20 or so laps is a point lap, top 5 riders to cross line get points. If a team laps the inside (racing) riders they get a lap. If there’s a tie in laps after 6 nights, the team with more points wins.

On our track it's not so bad, as like I said lapping

takes some serious work as its a larger track. But to track the lapping really requires eyes on the course and it really really helps when you have someone who’s sole purpose is to track the leader. Once they starte trying to lap and others drop off the back yikes. Lapping for us is usually teams falling down a lap versus others actually lapping the field. Credits to officials on these indoor tracks!

makes sense

tracking the lapped vs lapping sounds very hard once things heat up

kudos

by Willj on Dec 17, 2009 4:35 PM EST up reply actions

this might be a really dim question

but how well can you keep track of it when you’re riding it??

(I’ve heard riders come off say a points race & confess that they really didn’t have a clue where they were, for instance)

by civetta on Dec 17, 2009 4:36 PM EST up reply actions

I'm not sure the riders can themselves. They can't see the whole track.

They usually have spotters (a coach or teammate) on the sideline yelling info to them. Or as the rider is up top taking the rest, someone is up there on the sideline yelling the info. Our guys count on teammates shouting at them from the bottom and our announcer yelling the updates as we calculate them.

that makes sense… still more multi-tasking than humanly possible, I reckon

After officialling the track this past year, seems I've picked up

a lot more info than I had on it over last year! :-)

How far are you from Zurich?

Srsly, you should go if it’s feasable. This seems as if it’d be vastly more fun there.
