Cycling News reports that Carlos Sastre has opted to race the Giro in 2010. Sastre had a good race at the '09 coming in 4th on the road winning two mountain top stage finishes and plans on improving on that performance. Also mentions that after the Giro he'll wait and see what he'll do next.

I saw this Headline on Yahoo

“Sastre tempted by 3 classics”. Which ones I wonder? I’ll read more to find out… The story then continues:

MILAN (AP)—Spanish rider Carlos Sastre said he is considering taking part in cycling’s three classic races—the Tour de France, Giro d’Italia and Spain’s Vuelta—in 2010.

Glad these folks are on top of things…

Amusing that Yahoo! calls the GTs "cycling's three classics".

yeah

Classics are one thing, GT’s are another. You’d think Yahoo Sports would know the difference. Perhaps they should run all their stories by the Cafe before releasing them to the public.

well, funny they should mention that

My first thought was “uh oh, he’s gonna do all 3 gt’s and get burned out”. He’ll do the Giro, maybe commit to the tour early to help cervelo get an invite, and then be tempted by the “hometown” 6 MTF little tting vuelta and probably completely burn out next year trying to race the giro or giro then tour or maybe even burn out this year sometimes like he admitted he was in this year’s Tour.

He’ll be 35 next April and since the 2006 season has ridden 9 of 12 GTs and 4 of the last 5. The year (2006) he did 3 he rode for Basso in the Giro but pretty much rode for himself in the past. One of the few modern riders I can think of to ride with such consistency in multiple GTs a year without seeming to target one or the other. I wonder what that article’s source is though, on his site he says he ahs only chosen the Giro and that there is no pressure on him to decide now. He doesn’t decide or even discuss races after the Giro and says he’ll decide on form and how he feels and such and such, it all seemed rather indefinite.

He doesn't have to race the Tour...Cervelo should be an automatic entry with Hushovd and Haussler.

It would be smart for him to target the Giro and Vuelta and if he wants to then just go to the Tour to maybe snag a stage win.

Chris Anker Sorensen now says he is targeting the Giro

Says he will not participate in the Tour if he is too tired after the Giro.

I think it’s good for Evans and Sastre to target the Giro — it’s their best shot at glory. And it’s good for CAS, I suppose.

But, much as I like to see strong riders in the Giro, this can’t be good for Andy Schleck and Saxo as a whole. They are going to need strong #3 and #4 guys in the mountains at the Tour, which they didn’t have last year. If Saxo wants to exploit Astana over four stages in the Pyrenees, CAS has to be there at 100 pecent.

CAS may have less of a say than he thinks...

He’s young and dreaming big dreams.

Yeah, it looks kind of like he's lobbying Bjarne in the press

That might not be such a good idea.

Then again, Saxo’s roster is much thinner now so there won’t be any negative consequence to using what leverage he has.
