Well, I think that ridiculous poll Vs did on their website a couple months ago...
…made pretty clear what the chosen narrative was for this season. And nothing shall allow us to deviate from that. It’d be nice if some of the other talented American riders, on Astana or off, got a bit of credit here, even the ones who have never ever ridden with LA before. And that’s, you know, allowing for the whole let’s only focus on the Americans in an international competition thing that ordinarily goes along with US sports coverage.
I have nothing against Lance or his comeback, but the way he’s suddenly become the only story that matters no matter what else anyone else does is beginning to seriously rub me the wrong way.
by Ed K on Feb 16, 2009 5:31 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
get used to it
It’s the lament of a serious fan re. a sport that isn’t taken seriously enough. They will never stop talking down to us. Actually, it used to be worse, though Lance’s return is reviving the media’s old habits.

Seemed like Levi let up a bit early at the end, yes? Yeah, Peterson was going to get the stage, but he needs all the time he can get on the rest. Unless he figures today was an indication they got nothing on him.

Ha,
Levi did all the work, bridged up to the brake and was cool even after Peterson wheel sucked his way to the victory, not doing a SINGLE pull…
Imagine if that was the other way around…. You’d smash Levi here.
Levi is 100% class act, anyone calling him a wheel sucker or boring, just look at this stage.
by Bruce Suomi on Feb 16, 2009 6:43 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
well,
he’s still boring to me (I mean, we’ve got a whole career to look at), but I don’t think even the Levi-haters (not that many actually exist) could take anything away from him on today’s stage. Dude saw what he had to do, and did it. And without assistance. Respect due, to be sure.
He is still, however, short, bald, and not aggressive enough for his own good.
by Sui Juris on Feb 16, 2009 6:47 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Right on
Levi does not always see a lot of love around these parts but I agree he is a class act. He has been getting stronger every year and when he get the word that he needs to ride in support he does so without much drama and when gets the green light the man can lay out some pain. To see him drop the hammer today was just great. I will confess to being more then a little bit of a fan but when you have legs that can do this kind of talking who needs panache?

Man you guys put you’re glasses down early…must be all the fat ladys :-) but there are six stages to go…now if Bruckenheimer was writing the script. Bodes well for a season of hard racing though don’t it :-) :0

by Flatbagger on Feb 16, 2009 5:54 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I read it was so early because of the Golden Gate bridge crossing and logistics.
anyone hear anything different?
by ZoeRochelle on Feb 16, 2009 8:11 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Exactly
Apparently it cost the race something like $100,000 to close the bridge. Caltrans had to put down metal plates over the expansion joints (so the rider’s wheels didn’t get stuck), and they started the traffic redirection at 1 AM or something nutty like that. Plus they have had special signs up for a week telling people about the closure and delay. They had to get it done early.

You would think that for all that, they wouldn’t have been corralled into a single lane (where I am still in awe of/appalled by the rider who was bunny hopping drains).
Not even in the same realm, but those of you on the East Coast who haven’t tried Bike New York (Five Boroughs Tour now?) ought to. There’s a billion good reasons to ride it, but the relevant one here is bombing the Verazzano Narrows bridge near the end.

It's a popularity contest jersey
If you expect it to be something different, then you need to modify your expectations… Mocking that they gave the popularity contest jersey to Lance, or Basso, or the hometown boy (who is from Berkeley, not Sausalito) is kind of, I don’t know, mockable… But that is just my opinion…

No, I know that it’s a pop contest. But it’s usually one amongst some discernibly qualified group of people (as in, the most popular/biggest $$$ sponsor guy in the ultimately failed three man break would get it). The Lance thing was just stupid.
(Also, on rare occasions, it really does come down to a press vote. Witnessed the tallying a couple of times in GA (you know, when it wasn’t selected by the above method)).

To clarify on the
Cancer Most Courageous Jersey
sponsored by Breakaway from Cancer (so Amgen)
Each day, the most courageous rider will earn Amgen’s Breakaway from Cancer™ jersey. It will be awarded to a cyclist who best exemplifies the character of those engaged in the fight against cancer. The jersey will not necessarily be awarded to the fastest or best cyclist of the day, but rather to the rider who best demonstrates courage, sacrifice, inspiration, determination and perseverance
In reading this it is different than I originally thought. It has nothing to do with a rider who is involved in the fight against cancer (fund-raising, famiyl memeber or loved one with cancer, etc.) but having the same character. Its all in the wording.
Remember we do not know everything that happens on the road. Ben Jacques-Maynes twin brother and teammate went in an ambulance to the hospital following and he continued in the break. Courageous, a sacrifice, inspirational, determinate and persevering? Tose who voted on the jersey thought so.
I just realized I am getting tired of the race organizers getting slammed after every stage.
by ZoeRochelle on Feb 16, 2009 8:26 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
+1
Not that I have any better understanding of this jersey we’re talking about but if the race organizers want to throw out a jersey like that, it’s fine with me. I’m just hapy for the race. I always have a hard time understanding half the classifications in the Giro too.

According to yesterday's results, Jani lost 5 minutes
but now he suddenly is only 38 seconds back..so what is it really?

Well, 5:06 behind Mancebo.
And Levi was 1:07 behind Mancebo, so Jani was 3:59 behind Levi. But Jani lost another 21 seconds to Levi today, which should put him 4:20 back, shouldn’t it?
Damned if I know. Were the times adjusted for the shortened stage yesterday? Or was Jani confused for some other Astana rider yesterday because they were all wearing rain jackets?

CN has 6 riders from Astana who were in the first chase yesterday
Popo, Chechu, Horner, Levi, Lance, and Morabito…yet Morabito lost 17 minutes today and is now 21 back, so he lost 4 yesterday and wasn’t in the top group. They probably confused Morabito with Jani. Although Popo was also 4 minutes back heading into today according to today’s results. I guess yesterday’s results are very jumbled up.

Yes, I just did the math on Morabito and Jani
and it works out perfectly for them to have been confused yesterday. Plus I remember Johan twittering that Jani was in the lead group yesterday. Not sure about Popo.

Ok, we will say they mixed Jani and Morabito up
but now one has to wonder about Popo, who did they mix him up with? Maybe someone from another team?

Okay, comparing the lists from CN and the ATOC pages
for Stage 1, Popo is on CN’s list of 1:07 finishers but not on the TOC list. Jens! is on the TOC list of 1:07 finishers but CN thought he finished 13:38 back. Today, Jens! is listed at +40 seconds in the Overall standings, so he was indeed in the front group yesterday—or at least is still being credited as such. Could CN have somehow confused Popo and Jens!?

What a fucking horrible crime!
how can anyone mistake Jens! But that must be because Jens! was definitely in the front group yesterday

For what it's worth, Jens! is wearing #16 and Popovych #6.

Yeah
Yesterday (stage 1) was just a nightmare for the race organizers it seems.
Before reading Phil’s post just above I came to the same conclusion that either Popo or Morabito were identified as being in the first chase group when it was actually Brajkovic.

random comment
For those heading to Solvang weather looks considerably more decent than the NorCali stages. Mid-60s, partly cloudy. Not bad at all.
