Universal Sports on a Mac?

Maybe this has already been discussed, but does the Universal Sports viddy work on Mac? Or is it Windows only? If you have a Mac and it works, I'd appreciate hearing your set-up. For whatever reason, mine no worky.

Grazie!

I seem to remember from the olympics that hit was winderz only unfortunately… I t didn’t work on Linux, which does not bode well for us Mac drivers…

by Christopher See on Feb 2, 2009 12:02 PM EST reply actions

the olympics was something else, though, wasn't it?

anyway, cross didn’t work.

check out the links to NOS in the threads, though. they work great. so did sporza.

Olympics was MS SilverLight

That was Microsoft’s Silverlight for the Olympics.

It needs…

* Mac OS X 10.4.8 or later
* 800MHz PowerPC G4 processor, 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo processor, or higher
* Apple Safari, Firefox 1.5, or Firefox 2.0

More info from Apple.

Works fine on Macbook

I have a late 2007 vintage Intel Macbook and Universal Sports work fine here. I have the Perian Quicktime extension installed (free), but I don’t know if I needed it. Worked out of the box to look at a replay of the Cross Worlds. It took about 30 seconds for the video to come up after the ad though. Using latest OS X and Safari browser.

By the way I could watch the Olympics fine as well.

ah, this might be what i'm missing

the perian part.

but i also have a pre-intel mac, which can be a problem.

by Jen See on Feb 2, 2009 5:08 PM EST up reply actions

Try perion. I have it installed and it works flawlessly on my macbook.

So its either perian or Flip4Mac (The WMV alternative) that’s making it go.

I'll check when I get home.

I think it worked on mine. Its been awhile since I watch it and can’t remember if I switched over to Boot Camp. I do have Perian and Flip4Mac.

Leopard

I seem to recall that you need 10.5. I of course have 10.4.

by ursula on Feb 2, 2009 5:16 PM EST reply actions

ah, okay

There’s my answer. Thanks!

Gav <—- must upgrade OS

by Jen See on Feb 2, 2009 5:34 PM EST up reply actions

I don't think its your OS. I can not get it to work and I have Leopard.

Tomorrow, when I am no as tired as I am right now I’ll see if I can figure out what’s missing.

EUREKA! I found it!

I disabled the adblocker add-on I had installed on Firefox and now I have video.

by ZoeRochelle on Feb 3, 2009 1:15 AM EST up reply actions

ah, thanks

I have adblocker, so that is surely the problem. Totally appreciate the fix.

I’m not really patient enough to mess around with this stuff, so I’m always happy when someone takes the time to do it. Grazie mille!

by Jen See on Feb 3, 2009 11:45 AM EST up reply actions

THAT'S great to know

I’m glad its not the OS. I’ll get rid of my ad blocker too. Thanks Zoe!

by ursula on Feb 3, 2009 4:40 PM EST up reply actions

you can set exceptions to Adblocker

don’t get rid of the whole thing. I selectively set adblocker to allow ads for sites for 1) functionality and 2) support the sites I dig (e.g., PodiumCafe).

ja

I do this also :-)

by Jen See on Feb 3, 2009 9:55 PM EST up reply actions

Ha Ha Ha

how come Windows just works on this one?

pointers for Universal Sports

You can see the Universal Sports FAQ:

I have an Apple computer. Are your services compatible with OS X? Our service has been tested with the latest versions of Safari and Firefox for OS X. You will need to install Windows Media Player 9 for OS X. Please see the link below for download.

Windows Media Player 9 for OS X is located at the link below: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/mac/mp9/default.aspx

Hm, a new version? Anyway, most folks just use flip4mac to add Windows Media functionality to QuickTime. Here’s the min:

System Requirements for Download:
* Mac Intel or PowerPC OS 10.3.9, 10.4, 10.5.1 or later
* QuickTime 7.0 or later (7.1.3 recommended)

Just click your way through the free version choices; no need to buy anything.

p.s.: Yes, Gav, a newer computer would be mo betta now and for some time going forward. No bout adout it!

by gregm on Feb 2, 2009 5:40 PM EST reply actions

lol, right

But I’m cheap. And this one still does about 99% of what I ask of it ;-)

Huh, I have everything they say there, including Flippy, which is one of the cooler things since sliced bread. And WMP 9. Bizarro, these computers.

by Jen See on Feb 2, 2009 5:44 PM EST up reply actions

yes grasshopper an updaed OS would be good

Sad to think that one would need to do it on a mac though isn’t it?
10.5.2 on intel here..
Oh did I mention I love the little bugger?

by Christopher See on Feb 2, 2009 10:16 PM EST up reply actions

Just checked....

Universal works for me, the replays do at least. Check out the freestyle footage for skiers doing stupid silly $hit in the air.

by Christopher See on Feb 2, 2009 10:22 PM EST up reply actions

ps I just checked Universal, and it does seem to work ok for me… at least replay does. They have the freestyle stuff up if you want to see skiers do stupid silly $hit in the air. Missed shooting duelies since it was at night when I had to be working.

The solution

Download this:

http://dynamic.telestream.net/downloads/download-flip4macwmv.htm

Ignore all the upsell crap, and it’ll make wmv work flawlessly in quicktime. Trust me, you want it.
