Final Road Notes

I hit my knee on the handlebars and can't take out the garbage.

Crashdan and Sui Juris are both fine men of culture, humor, taste, hygiene, and an abiding love of all god's creatures (with some exceptions for spiders). If you have the chance to catch a race with either, be not afraid. Let them drive too, especially if you are in a hurry.

Still, I don't understand why Sui Juris loves global warming...

Everyone from the Cafe was a pleasure to meet. Funny, if you think someone you talk to on a website seems very cool/fun/nice, they probably are.

One underrated aspect of cyclotourism is how hard it is to get everywhere, at least at the ToC. Now, maybe this was unique to the southerly stages, but each stage of the race covers a few hours' worth of driving, and that's before considering logistics (like road closures) and transfers. Speaking of transfers, I have an increased appreciation for the ink-stained wretches (proper journalists) who cover a race with, you know, responsibilities. It's a little difficult to imagine three weeks of chasing a race, constantly moving to catch glimpses and hoping to avoid the infinite potential for hitches. Bottom line: it was great fun for a few days, but considering in retrospect the 17 transfers in last year's Giro d'Italia, it's not the complaints that amaze me, it's the lack of violent outbreaks.

Speaking of proper journos, it's a pleasure to have a pro like Lyne posting here. Like I said, it's hard work what they do, much more than kicking back and writing a post. For more information about the journo's life, there's a really great excerpt from the Buzzati book which you can read here.

Solvang is kind of a silly place, but I can't imagine a much better course for the time trial. Just a nice mixture of climbs, flats, false flats, and a technical stretch heading home. It's generally pretty easy riding, which is about right for a chrono. But the run into Los Olivos, coming after five miles of mostly false flats into a headwind, was harder than it might look on TV. Anyway, this may not seem critically important, but the race has been settled by the end of the Solvang stage just about every year.

The rest of the Santa Ynez valley is just gorgeous. Cycling heaven. Very friendly, probably because there isn't much to be unhappy about.

There is so much positive about how the Tour of California conducts itself, a strange byproduct of which is that the race will probably face endless speculation about how to make it bigger. More mountains! Move it to April! None of this makes sense to me. I previously blogged about how the riders don't want the race to get any harder (if a small sample of questions can be believed). Personally I can't see the race happening in April, or whatever the alternative suggestions are; in the middle of the European season, it's not easy to just jump seven time zones for a week. Too much is asked of the riders already [insert anti-doping rant], and an April race simply can't expect the same collection of stars. More likely, you could tempt some of the climbers out, and the American teams will be here even if they run it in the week between Christmas and New Years. But I don't think it can have the same impact in April. Accept what the race is now, this is good enough.

From afar it really looks like the fans race, a festival which is excellent

Judging by your reports and comments from riders you really shouldn’t underestimate that for most guys , this is really early. They cannot and don’t wan’t to do the crazy hard climbing-stages. So I think as you that they should build on what is already so great about the race and not try and make it into something it can never be.

Personally if I was a race director I would try to find a signature uphill finish. A Californian Mur de Huy , Cauberg,San Luca or Montelupone (not necessarily that crazy steep). That would add spice and make the Cali-trip worthwhile for another type of rider but not make the race more taxing.

What Jens is trying to say is

If the ToC can lure the Killer over with a stage end designed for him, Jens will come to America.

Or, like a Mount Faron or Col d'Eze

Good point about a signature climb. They don’t have to be overly hard either to do the job. But it could use a climbing finish.

by Jen See on Feb 23, 2009 11:55 AM EST up reply actions

I agree, they should find a shorter tough climb to finish on top of

there probably shouldn’t be a finish on top of a mountain like Palomar until March, or maybe even May. But there is no reason for the ToC not to be able to find a mountain top finish. Look at the races who have had one so far this year…the Tour de San Luis had 2 4-6km mountain ascents to the line, the Tour de Med had Faron, and the Volta ao Algarve had the 2-3km very steep climb to the finish. The first big mountain top finish isn’t until P-N, and that’s how it probably should be, but there have been plenty of smaller mountain top finishes that have livened up races, and the ToC should search for one to put in.

Hincapie

I had a theory about the climbs being in the middle of the race to make it easier, but asked Hincapie only to be shot down. Climbing is climbing I suppose.

And I like the idea. The Giro often puts these climbs (Oropa, Montevergine, Montelupone) at the end of a flat stage, so it’s exciting without killing anyone.

Nah

Climbs in the middle almost make it harder. Because you have to get over the things, and still do all the hard riding that always comes at the finish. If the climb is the finish, the bunch can slack a bit in anticipation of it.

I do think the Tour of Cali could cut some of the incidental climbing in exchange for finding a finishing climb that would be more “signature.” This was a hard course this year – maybe a little too hard. I’d vote for backing it off a tad, myself.

by Jen See on Feb 23, 2009 12:06 PM EST up reply actions

Do you think

maybe having Mt Palomar that late in the race was a bit too much? Although I liked it, I was a trifle disappointed that the sprinters all headed for the tall timber that morning. I’ve got to think the only reason Cav even started the stage was because he was holding the points jersey.

I do like the idea of a mountaintop finish. It doesn’t have to be Angrilu or anything like that. I think even a Cat 2 would be sufficient to make it interesting.

by Le Comte on Feb 23, 2009 12:35 PM EST up reply actions

Palomar

I’d be in favor of keeping Palomar – it got a good turn-out and climbs are good. But I would have takent out some of the early incidental climbing – maybe the Sierra stage, though damn that thingy was beautiful.

Totally agree that a climbing finish doesn’t have to be super killer to be good racing. Mont Faron isn’t that hard, though a climber usually wins on it. Chris’s ref to the Giro climbing finishes is a great model, I think.

Worlds-style circuit-race stages with short steep classics-type climbs

could hold some promise too, for future editions. Climbs like that are in every major city in California. Circuit races are spectator friendly like the tt’s, and offer many chances for attacks, tactics, true selection of a winner, without being too hard for this early in the year. Combine the circuit race cities with the TT cities and you have much cheaper logistics and a fan/media slam dunk. Riders would love it too because of easier transfers.

Palomar was great fun to watch but unless the finish is there it won’t have a dramatic effect on the race outcome, so it’s looking a little pointless to me. I think I’d rather see a San Diego or La Jolla circuit race, or Carlsbad, or Frisco, or Santa Barbara, 15k-20k loop with some good hard climbing. Keep the stage the same every year to build interest.

TDU got it mostly right with the Willunga stage where they did two loops of the hill.

Solvang TT course could even be used as a circuit race in addition to the tt. A little narrow, but so what? Maybe not difficult enough to make a clear selection though. But there are other roads around Solvang that could work as a good hard circuit.

Just thinking out loud while it’s all still fresh in the mind!

Have a Worlds like circuit that is 20km with a mediocre bump in the middle to soften the legs and a shortish, steep ramp at the end. Send them around seven times, and you got yourself a race. Have two of these “classic style” circuits and get rid of some of the big mountains in the middle of the race.

As far as ‘Improving’ the race…you suffer from the same problem as the TDU, i.e wrong time, wrong place….so Improvement has no scope if you are to please the financial and organisational requirements of the circus as well. At least the TDU with all of it’s starts and finishes all within a two hour ride from the metropolis of Adelaide is easy for a cycling fan to plan their week of enjoyment without the hassle of transfers. It truly is a race for a riding cycling fan to follow whereas it seems that TOC needs a good deal of planning and petrol/gas usage to follow. Each race is unique and to try and appease the needs of all fans and participants is impossible…focus on the good, use it as a Government Tourism ad…I saw snow, snakes and vines all on one stage… unique.

Need a city with a mountain

The problem with mtn top finishes for ToC is the absence of a city that is willing to put anything into sponsoring one. It’s strictly a commercial decision. As much as AEG might like one, it doesn’t work financially. That’s why the original talk of Palomar being a MTF faded and we ended in Escondido.

If I were picking one, I might try to have a generally South to North tour, and have a final climb on sunday that went by the Ferry Terminal, straight up Market Street, 17th, ending on the top of Twin Peaks. It’s “only” 900 ft, but it’s brutal, about 10% average for the last 1.5 mi.. But it’s probably too expensive to organize, hence no SF start/finishes the last two years, and the demise of the SF Grand Prix.

very. this one was tough.

Long transfers, long stages, bad weather early on took its toll.

Glad you made it home okay!

I like the Bob Roll story.

Would they get it though?

It should involve a rampaging horde of anarchists bent on destroying all that's holy...

… you know… Michael Ball.

If he did.

I’m going to be bummed that he didn’t twitter about it.

I'll try and remember that the next I hit the ice cream ....

so I’m feeling the post-race doldrums this morning… reviewing in my head all my mistakes, disapoointed that I didn’t do more, write more, found better spots for photos….

sigh

There's only so much one person can do!

Big race to cover on your own. LOL, there’s a reason that traditional media divides the photo and writing jobs too. That’s a lot to do at once.

Nice job out there!

Heh.

Sounds familiar.

(Which is part of why I decided that it would just be best for me to not even try, at ToC.)

hmm

Me, I think the BJM story was worth it. Priceless, right there.

by Jen See on Feb 24, 2009 3:57 PM EST up reply actions

But your pics were awesome.

Especially that one of Cav sprinting on the pavers, lighting was killer. That’s right up there with Cor Vos and Watson! Be happy!

love his work

probably my fave actually.

by Jen See on Feb 25, 2009 12:00 PM EST up reply actions

mmm, tastey

He’s really creative. I like that – some of the others seem to get a bit stale, sort of repeating the same shots a lot. Love his stuff.
