VDS Smack Day!
Welcome to the 2009 Podium Cafe Virtual Directeur Sportif!
Apparently a few of you have been waiting for this moment. Rather than listing all the names on your team, here's an idea: tell us your strategy. Did you go top-heavy on 20+ pointers and one-point guys? Did you go for a deeper bench, with guys priced in the teens? Did you target particular races, or deliberately try to spread your team across the calendar? Did you pick with your head or your heart?
Entries are now closed. Final tally is something around 200 teams.

okay, my selection strategy
this my first VDS team, so no comparison to last year whatsoever.
as of how I pick the team,
1) pick all my favourite, regardless how I think they’ll do in 2009
2) I don’t have 25 favourites, so come up with some names I think will do well.
3) end of step 2 my team costs about 300 points, so eliminate some that might not do well.
4) pick 1 & 2 pointers based on how I like their names…
5) review the full list to see if I miss any obvious bargain,
6) wait for any good/bad news — drop Valverde & Freire as a result
6) finished! Yeah~

I like 4), should've used it myself
instead, I was pretending I knew something about young riders I’ve never heard of, or simply hoping folks like Soler were bargains and will deliver this year.

I picked all my favorites
Which made me realize all the guys I like aren’t gc contenders in stage races, so I said to hell with it and decided that if ever there was a cycling cage match, I’d have a team to compete.

Riders I like + riders that look like bargains +
check too see that I have a decent mix of sprinters/climbers etc + check that I have the calender covered (not 23 riders in the Tour/2 in the Giro) = The Mighty Herd
My main criteria when thinning down the shortlist has been to find riders that are likely to do well in more than one type of race i.e. like Boonen (cobbles+sprints) Kirchen (ardennes+ GT) giving value for money (cost). It was harder this year, I think I have more one-type-race-specialists. Partly for that reason I don’t expect to do as well this year.
Oh , and kill your darlings. This year I dumped Gilbert, Kirchen, Nocentini, Sastre, Mocoutie who all did great in 2008.

Flipped a coin as well,
but if i didn’t like what came up I flipped again. Riders I love, and those I love to hate…that’s VC Les Pignons Fous! We have no grand tour rider and that’s the way we likes it.

My strategy: have one top-guy who can win a GT and a cat-3 tour (Contador) plus the best sprinter of the field (Cavendish).
Then looked at all the 10-18 pointers and try to find some who will be riding a lot, can win races and will ride either Giro or Vuelta. Not only concentrate on Tour de France.
In the 1-6 pointers find the young ones who can be a suprise this year, can do good in GT’s and some small other tours. Plus the cheap sprinters like Gavazzi, Brown, van Hummel.
I expect (hope) to do well in the second half of the season. I didn’t concentrate on the cobble races or the three Ardennes classics.

In a few days
Maybe a week, depending on exactly how hard it is to compile. but yes. All season long you can be comparing your team to others, rider by rider, once I get the Big Spreadsheet assembled.

Cavendish
I talked myself out of him at the last moment. I went heavy on grand tour guys who have some classics prowess. No sprinters at all (unless Oscar Gatto hits the big time) and not much for the cobbles. I dumped Cav for Cunego, a far more established guy and possible world champion… also one of the most consistent scorers around.

I went the other direction, but i really wrestled with it.
The fact that Cav fought his way to the finish of ToC made a big difference for me. I may be a fool; we’ll see.

Cav could easily earn in the 1300 range this year
He said last year he should have won Gent-Wevelgem—if he does this year that’s +250. He’s also targeting the green jersey in the Tour: +120 if he makes it, or +90 if Boonen edges him into second (plus points for any days he has the green along the way, which could add up nicely).
And…his 17 wins of 2008 began in April. He’s already got four—almost a quarter of last year’s total—and it’s still February. So I’m guessing a number of last season’s top-ten finishes will convert to wins this year, for additional points.

I didn't do the math...
…but this is roughly the sense I had. Basically. He kicked major ass last year, and he’s probably gonna be even more dominant as a sprinter this year. And stage / race wins = points.

Gatto has a new team this year
so maybe that will be a catalyst for change. Probably not though. I ended up going for Cavendish – I can’t really say why but I remember those years where Petacchi whould win 25 races in a season and won 9 in a single giro. He’s probably not going to work out but my guess is he’ll make me smile more often than anyone else out there. So it’s surprising that I also stumped up for Benna – which now I think about it is a stupid thing to have done. If Cavendish is an unstoppable force and wins everything in sight and justifies his price tag then Bennati probably isn’t going to be.
I’m a bit disappointed with the 1 pointers available – I kept thinking of riders only to ind them not listed. I got very good value out of my 1pt picks last year with Uran, T. Martin, Arroyo, and Moncutie but this year I expect very little from them. I’d have liked to have picked Franzoi, Scarponi, Luekemans, Tom Veelers but sadly no . . . shouldn’t have been on holidays when the list came out I guess.

I was tempted for a long time to go with Cav
but he was just a bit too pricey. Plus the fact that Zomegnan seems to have devised something of an anti-Cav Giro where the few flat stages have nasty little kicks around 5 to 10 k from the end. The Tour looked a little bit too lumpy too.

Last year I had both Cav and Cunego.
This year, Cav’s to pricey for what he might do. I still have GT dreams of Cunego.

Well, as a newbie
I felt I could make my pics without any masterplan, so a combination of heart and bargains. I see my team is ridiculously scandinavian… it has to be a real invasion from the north to make it to a top vds spot

Scandinavians was my original plan
But there were not 25 of them (even if I adjusted the rules to also include Svein Tuft and the Finns). I ended up with only 3 scandinavians, I think.

Strategy? Atala don't need no stinkin' strategy!
First I collected information about all the riders, vds points; vds price, other results, height, weight, frame size, breakfast preferences, hottitude dummy, etc.. I put all the data in a database and did some regression analysis based on a general equlibrium model.
Then the phone rang, and I woke up. Instead I started with Contador and Cavendish. Then I went through all the low priced riders, using the “yeah, why not” and “seems to be cheap”* methods, before choosing the more expensive riders who most certainly will underperform this year.
- Veikkanen, for example. I have a hunch that Bruce will channel some of the gap to Jussi this year.

Karpets is uncertain, no doubt
But Chavanel, the problem is QuickStep, i don’t know how many freedom he will have…
And looking for last year, maybe he actually is many expensive, because he took the yellow in P-N, than win a semi-classic….i doubt that he could do the same in 2009.
The only way that he win many points as last year, is win Tour De Flandres “à La Devolder”.

I went for potential over last year's big earners.
No 25-pointers and only one 20. That allowed me to have 8 picks who cost 10 or more points—and of course to balance that I have a lot of cheapies. I tried to pick guys I liked, but left off a couple of favorites because I thought they were too expensive for their probable return. Found another bargain or two when I did the who-was-worth-it-last-year analysis. Then, ursula’s predictions earned a couple of guys spots on the roster when I was wavering about them. Anytime stats looked close on riders, I went with the one I liked better. Or at least had a nipple ring.
I ended up with ten 1-pointers, largely (a) grabbed from Slipstream because I like that team and think Vaughters has a good eye for talent, and (b) trackies/cross guys who could make big transitions to the road.
With a little luck, I figure my team will bring me 10,500 points. But do bear in mind that my Versus Challenge ATOC team came in…um…1728th.
Oh, and Cav is going to kick ass this year. And he will make it to Paris.
Google is my domestique.
by majope on Feb 26, 2009 7:26 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
I went with a "I think these guys will do well" thumb in the air approach
for my first team.
Then after I lost 3 guys to ATOC injuries and related items I took another look with an eye to who would do well all season long. I too went for the double “c” picks (Cont, Cav), threw in Levi based on some of the analysis on here and from watching ATOC (also why I picked Cav over Boonen).
Then I look for values in the form of guys who were injured last year but should have scored well or guys whose new teams look like they’ll get better support or opportunity then before. These criteria end up adding DZ, Roger Hammond, Mick Rogers, and Thomas Voeckler.
THen I filled out the rest with a variety of over/under priced bargains. The result is a mix of:
1- 25 pointer
1-20
1-18
2- 10
4 -6
6-4
9 -2
1 -1 pointer
THis is my first full season. I played a couple of the GT games so we’ll see how this goes. I figure I’ll end up in the back half of the comp.

Long-time lurker here on PdC...
…who had a pack-fill VDS team last year. This year I picked a few guys I thought could score (AC, Cav, and Mick Rogers…I’ve got a good feeling about him for 10 points), then picked a bunch of my faves (Hincapie, A. Schleck, Zabriskie, etc.) who might be capable of producing a good result or two. Mixed with a bunch of 1,2 and 4 pointers to get to 150.
Come to think of it, that was my approach last year, too. Oh well.

I touched on this elsewhere
but I found it very hard to spend 150 points this year. I picked a load of riders I liked or who I thought looked promising, and found myself well underspent. So I then went for a 25-pointer, and after getting seriously screwed over on my not-the-dopers approach last year I went 100% cynical and picked Basso, then threw in DiLuca to keep him company. Then LPR weren’t awarded wildcard status, so bye bye Danilo and hello some frantic rearranging like this:
-I don’t want any other twelve pointers
-who is the closest match to the Killer in terms of schedule
-OK, Gasparotto
-but he’s only 8
-so who gets bumped
-Sorry Thor, hello Levi claws two back. Some lower down tweaking gets teh other two.
by Monty. on Feb 26, 2009 9:01 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Hard to get to 150 indeed
I found a lot of potential bargains in the 1-4 points range but I was forced to put some expensive guys in for balance even though their expected rate of return was below my standards.

Definitely different strategy from last year
I was sure that Sastre was going to win Le Tour, and I started there (well, there and with Oscar Friere). Sastre’s not going to repeat that, and Friere, oh, Friere. Such sweet parting. And I think that Thor’s best days are behind him, too. So I went a little younger with some guys I thought were interesting, and without any particular GT ambition. Which left me with 18 points. And who, at 18 points, is money in the bank? LL.* I am still a little surprised at that. Doesn’t mean I won’t mock him all year long, though.
*Not a ladies love, or legend in leather, but he’s short and clean (and he might wear pleather). Last of the red hot ToC threes, and now you know what LL means.

"The Year of Jani"
I centered my team around the ‘winner’ of Lombardia last year. Any guy who throws his hands up in celebration after winning a sprint for 2nd at a monument is perfect to anchor my VDS squad.
by samboo on Feb 26, 2009 9:32 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
I didn’t go out of my way to pick scandinavians as El V and Monty remarked earlier in the thread since the DS of my team is the original Diminutive Viking.
I really tried to spread my picks through the year—I may be a little heavy on the early season but I have a number of sprinters and GT/3rd cat tour hopefuls. I ditched Cav for Boonen as well—Cav is likely to win most of their head to heads but I think Boonen is a better value with his Cobble abilities.
Also tried to pick some of the young’ins. Rollin (along with everyone else it appears), De Gregario, etc. that appear poised to do well this year. Thanks all for the heads up on Greipel—hope I don’t regret dumping him for the just started shaving last week Aurelien Clerc.
I got really, really lucky last year—My first year in this game got me the Technicolor jersey in the first two weeks and I rolled in the top 10 most of the year. This year, well, I may have planned and schemed a little too much……
by tshawytcha on Feb 26, 2009 9:43 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
I'll be very surprised
if we get a decent return out of Rollin. Picked him because I like him (ever since he nearly lapped the CSC field as the only TU member there), and on the (very slim) chance that he might not be pack fodder in a race or two.

I had Aurelien Clerc for a long time until he finally got shuffled off
He was one of what did seem to be an awful lot of possible potential bargains if you wanted a team leader on a little team rather than, say, a waterboy at Astana. Likewise Simeoni at Flaminia and Bobbie Traksel at Vacansoleil. And I’m sort of hoping that with Valv. gone, Oscar Pereiro is going to step up a bit. OK it’s a gamble, but surely worth two points.

george 1st, lance 2nd and then as many of my favorite american riders as i could afford and still have a team (Z, CVV, danny pate, Jmac, etc.) threw in chechu and another astana rider but i really had to work hard not pick a bunch of astana guys in the 1’s and 2’s just because their names were more familiar to me. Um now. Went with Contador- too big of a gamble/upside to resist plus I have no worries about OP. Took his SBN too.
Avoided all the top line sprinters- not deliberately but it just came out that way. I can close to Benna.
I took riders who will be team leaders like Sam San, Traksel or Colom or Gesink or Ciolek or Dekker or Garzelli etc.
I took riders who were affected by injury last year (Horner)
I took riders who were affected by Valverde’s presumed suspension- J-Rod, Passamontes
I took a couple Cervelo cobbles guys- Hammond, Haussler.
Took cheap kids- I have 9 one pointers.

My strategy...
List all the people I’ve heard of.
Realize that I’m now packing 300+ points on my team.
Start replacing folks with people I haven’t heard of.
Cuss.
Get sad that I have to ax Bennati but I’m holding on to Hincape gosh darnit.
Finally get it down to 150 points.
Read the list to Mark.
Be told, “um, he’s got a broken [fill in the blank]”
Cuss some more.
Replace broken [fill in the blank] guy.
Read the list to Mark.
Get asked, “Are you suuuuuurre?”
Cuss again.
Realize I have \o/ on the list…but think he may be /o\ this year.
Replace some other guys with one pointer guys I find in Velo News that have potential.
Read the list to Mark.
Get told, “Other’s already "discovered” those 1 pointers…"
Cuss again.
Leave the list alone and declare,
“It’s like being in the marching band, I play my little heart out…but the football team still sucks.”
Submit the list.
Cuss again when I realize we have no beer or wine in the house.
Feel smug because I don’t have Levi on my list…but Mark has the little nugget on his.

My strategy
Picked Tom Boonen, because he’s always worth an investment.
After that, chose a lot of riders I like. Thus, I picked Ballan, half of the GarMen, Nibali, Kruziger, Bruseghin, Stuey, JJ, Baden, and Dominguez. Then, I picked strategically for the 1/2 pointers. I saw a lot of guys with a lot of potential there, mostly young guys, who have serious upside. They’re not proven winners, but ultimately, you’ve gotta take a risk or two to have a shot.
Overall, I wasn’t going for strategy, but for guys I liked. I have a lot of strong early classics guys, with a weaker tour GC set of guys, and some weaker sprinters, so I feel likely to collapse once the big tours come in, but until then, I’ll be really solidly near the top.

Another lurker and first time player here.
My big point guys are Benna, AC, Cunego, Gilbert and Van Avermaet and I’m loaded with a bunch of 2 pt’ers, 13 in all. Looking for riders like Trofimov, Hutarovich, Lhotellerie, and Roelandts to really bust out with some big rides this season and hopefully my trio of youngsters, E.B.Hagen, Ciolek, and Breschel will keep improving on their good results from last year.

I'm a first timer too and I share five of these riders with you (Benna, AC, Gilbert, Hagen, Breschel)
And have a similar policy. I think my team might be a bit low pointer heavy though. I think I maybe should have gone with one more big hitter instead of more 4 pointers….

I had myself a glass of Bushmill's Whiskey (Ireland)
Then picked my team in about 15 mins. No research whatsoever. Ten higher price guys, mostly GT guys, and then 15 one-pointers, broomwagoneers. Thus, Team Bushmill’s BroomWagon was born!
That’s about all the time I have to put into it!

Strategy?
I started by trying to figure out a way to multiply C. No luck there, so….
I am much more into enjoying having a team of guys I admire/have fandom for versus one of high point/value ratios that I question too often. My hope is to stay in the upper half. If I do that, I’ll be thrilled. Sadly though in trying to play with the points my guys like George and DZ were left off. And my guy Will was left on. Love the guy but he’s not going to score me much. He’s a breakaway stud who will be exciting cheering for but chances are most likely he’ll be pulled in with 10k to go. :-(
My big pointers were Fabian and Cav. I’m curious to follow Tony with trying for a more GT type roll. It was a gamble at his price but he is my TT guy too so we’ll see. Of course C is on the list, and only once. I prefer Cav over Boonen even if point to values aren’t there. I included Free Andy as I think he’s going to be pretty solid and given more chances to lead this year. Maaskant impressed me early on last year so he was a for sure.
Others were names I knew and remembered from last year and recall liking. I probably should’ve looked at the spreadsheet from last year for comparisons but that’s like work and I just want to pick and have fun.
My last review was trying to find every note Drew wrote about who he selected or not. I was trying to avoid his curse and can only wait to see who is doomed.

sounds a bit like my strategy...
i wanted a team of guys i like/admire for one reason or another. i picked my top seven in about seven seconds:
Evans
Cunego
Van Avermaet
Chavanel
Gilbert
Gerdemann
Roche
Then Flecha took his place as honourary captain. Then I tried to pick Canadians – Tuft, Rollin, Hesjedal, Meier and I also tried to pick some young up-and-comers. Then it was a matter of filling in, with at least one honourary Brit, Daniel Lloyd, and Geraint Thomas to carry the Welsh flag.

I started with my team from last year
and ended up keeping 8 guys, including my 25 pointer Fabian. ANd I went with guys I like and either did well for me last year, or look to do better – I hope – this year. I had Oscar till yesterday afternoon, but ended up replacing him with Thor. I know he could heal up fine, but he’s getting older too, so….. Others include: Cunego, Bennati – couldn’t resist – A. Schleck, CVV, Matti Breschel, LLS, Soler, Dan Martin. And I’m on the Haussler and Boom wagon too.

I had Contador top of my list for nearly three weeks and then changed to Basso last night before submitting. I don’t regret it (yet!) I’ve went a bit sprinter crazy with Boonen, Cavendish, Ciolek, Pettachi (despite the LPR developments) and Brown. The rest are young cheap riders like Weylandt, Vellits, Inglisky, Madrazo, Rohregger and di Gregorio and dependables (hopefully) like A Schleck, Wegmann, Gilbert, Colom and Breschel.

Started from the top
Went more GT-heavy this year. Last year was very cobbly and the highlight was 1-3-4 at Flanders. That was great but I’m not going to try to aim for that again; and it was all downhill from there. Still, I have a number of spring classics guys, including Ballan again, and despite my best efforts, ended up with more Belgians and Dutch than Spaniards and Italians.
Meanwhile, I almost feel bad for saying this, but can our Fearless Leader stop drooling over his new wheels long enough to post the final team list?

I have no aspirations of winning anymore, I just want to select guys that I enjoy watching race. that means that my team shows up in force during the classics, and is pretty poorly represented for the GTs.
by zegnotronic on Feb 26, 2009 1:36 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I picked Basso, then chickened out
about having 25 points invested in one guy, even if I do think he’s the favorite for the Giro and probably the Vuelta as well. So, I traded him for Baby Schleck and Mick Rogers. The two of them combined will probably score fewer points than Basso, but at least if one of them gets injured, the other one will still be in the game.
I picked Friere, then reluctantly dropped him after his California crash. I had to drop a couple of two-pointers to one-pointers in order to substitute Boonen for Friere, but Boonen seemed like the only comparable sprint/classics threat to Oscarito.
I picked Gibo, of course, because he’s my favorite rider, and I couldn’t very well have a team called Simoni Hooligans without Simoni at the helm.
Then it was just a question of filling out the roster with other favorites and guys who seemed like good values, and then watching helplessly as all my “secret weapons” showed their stuff before the VDS deadline had passed.
First Haussler, who I’ve been nurturing on my team for the past two seasons and who was a steal at two points, starts winning everything in sight two weeks before the deadline, then Ginanni goes and wins Trofeo Laigueglia last weekend, and finally Lorenzetto, who re-upped with my team after scoring big for me as a one-pointer last year, wins two Giro di Sardegna stages in a row in the closing hours before the VDS deadline.
I keep telling these guys, don’t show your hand before Het Volk Whatchamacallit, but do they listen?
Next year, my team’s winter training camp is going to be run by former poker world champions Phil Hellmuth and Scotty Nguyen.

The Wing Kong Exchange...
Started off with The Accountant but the cost was too pricey since his point total will be half of what it was last year. I considered Valverde until I realized that I just can’t bring myself to put him on my squad. Cadel? Never. Davide Rebellin… I went old last year and wont make that mistake again. Fabian Cancellara… ooohhhhhh man did I want to put him on the team, but I just didn’t go through with it. Basso? He’s dead to me. So, no 25 pointers. Had SBN, dropped SBN, added SBN again, dropped SBN finally…
Had Kirchen… then Kirchen donated his clavicle to the Great God of Cycling. Had Greipel until I read that he lost an arm in a dog fight. Contemplated Devo, Samu and Leeeeenoooooosss, but never asked any of them out. Actually had The Killer on my squad at one point then I came to my senses. Saw the massive disparity in 10 pointers vs. 12 pointers
My biggest point man is Alessandro Ballan… I’m hoping for some classics points there and maybe some GT stuff as well.
Here’s the full roster that will go off to rule the Universe from beyond the grave…
Ballan
Benna
Sastre
God of Smoke
Shleck the Younger
Nuyens
Maaskant
Gasparotto
Nocentini

I view picking a team as an exercise in energy conservation… I don’t so much choose the riders as allow the riders to choose me… very zen… the result is a bunch of top performers from last year, a few pure sentimental options (Horner, Weening), and a bunch one-pointers who’s names start with the letter “A” (less scrolling = more zen). Total elapsed time from start to finish was 15 minutes….

Boonen (but you knew that)
Cunego (made me learn to love Lombardia)
Levi (made me look forward to riding the Solvang TT course next year)
Oh, and Maskaant of course.

I’m so poutting. I was hoping for great things with Maaskant and now he’s going to go over and visit his cobbles buddy Meatball and end up with some kind of unkown bug bite right on his ass and not race for months. What the hell.
You’re right Jens. I should’ve kept my demand until the weekend.

Dirty South Bike Team
I went extremely top heavy, with riders that I think will win big and if not will absolutely be on the podium alot this season. I found it hard to put faith in the mid-price riders and really didn’t use any. Here are my top guys.
Alberto Contador- For the tour and some smaller stage races
Damiano Cunego- For the hilly classics and worlds, as well as some GT Stages if not an overall place. I think he can be on the podium in the Giro though. A slightly cheaper Valverde if you will.
Tom Boonen- Will win alot, and also get alot of 2nds to Cav, but I think he is much stronger all around due to his classics strength.
Daniele Bennati – Again, excellent sprinter and beat Cav. several times in the Giro. He’s started the season strong.
Levi Leipheimer – Levi will win some tt’s and middling stage races, might podium in le tour, and could win the Vuelta if he focused on it

my strategy is the same as why I fail at fantasy sports
I picked cyclists I liked, regardless of how good they are. Which is why I fail. Team Gunners will be hot, but not very good.
Today, I raced à la Chavanel, and I succeeded.

Playing with Podium Girls
I was ready to pull the trigger on this neo-pro squadra about a month ago until Kirchen got all selfish on me and decided to take an early vacation. I almost de-Greipelfied myself, but felt guilty after I gave up on Kirchen. Anyhoo, I was focused on using all 150 pts and I didn’t want to commit to a 25 pointer…I have no good reason, I just didn’t. I basically searched through last years results and tried to pull some YOUTH and STRENGTH from the mid-pointers (8 – 18 pts). Coincidentally, quite a few of those ALSO happened to be guys I like (i.e. Pierrick Fedrigo, Maxime Monfort, J-Rod, etc).
Benna was my last minute replacement for Kirchen and I scratched Lars Boom and filled with Pieter Weening based on ATOC results. And becaue he FINISHED the TdF stage after taste testing the road furniture, Cunego was first on my list.
Damiano Cunego
Daniele Bennati
Joaquin Rodriguez Oliver
Samuel Sanchez Gonzalez
Thomas Dekker
Roman Kreuziger
Enrico Gasparotto

strategy: as a first year VDS, not get dropped.
overall: no research. save my time for anguish between nibali and steegmans and the performance/price/potential difference.
-pick all around dream team. unfortunately, realize i’m 300 points over the limit.
-start again
-pick my favorite riders. then in a flash of self awareness, realize i’ve never, ever, picked a winner. eliminate these riders.
-start again
-even though i’m american, eliminate american riders.
-start again, pick contador.
-then focus on picks under 6 points. mollema and haussler might be upside surprises.
-the middle point range guys were difficult but i wanted a few 12-16’s for diversity (crash, injury) instead of 2 20’s.
-end up with an awkward point distribution but i’ve already spent an inordinate amount of time as a VDS.
-quickly submit, not looking back. but instantly regret popovych.
1-25
3-16
1-14
1-12
2-6
5-4
7-2
5-1

I think Cunego is one of the best high priced riders…Especially if Valv-piti gets banned. They are both climbers that can sprint really well. He could potentially win at least one ardennes classic.
Also I think now that Gert will have more freedom as a sprinter he may shine through, especially for 4 pts.

Echelon of Canucks...and some other guys
As the name indicates my teams heart and soul is composed of the canucks in the peleton (Tuft, Rollin, Hesjedal, Barry and Meier), then I added a sprinkle of riders who I love to watch/look forward to watching improve (SamSan, Flecha, Vandevelde, Maaskant & Ciolek). I then rewatched last years Flanders and decided that I liked Rabo’s cobbles crew (added Nuyens and Langeveld) and filled in the rest with some guys who may actually get me some points (Gilbert, Pfannenberger, Dekker T), some young guys who may surprise me (Costa, Alex Rasmussen and Hans Dekker)…and some other guys (JAGM, Barredo, Igor Anton, Haussler, Davis A).
Overall my strategy is to peak early (April) and get a handful of top-10 at the Vuelta (much cheaper than getting top ten’s at the Giro/Tour but worth the same points).

Canucks..... & Celts
Base for me was similar – Canucks, plus the Irish riders. Sadly, Philip Deignan was not included (that I saw) so I left out Meier for karmic balance. After that I tried to find a few points throughout the season. I recall getting next to nothing from the early season classics last year. My other goal, almost achieved last year, was to get at least some score with every rider I selected. Not so sure about that one this year. No Olympics means Michael Barry will be relegated to carrying Cav through the mountains all year. But, at least with Contador and Cunego I have a shot at different times of year this time.

Cunning Stunts
Probably THE best VDS team I’ve ever assembled. First of all, the Cricket retired so I didn’t have to spend any points on him. Second of all, I decided not to spend any points on the losers I spent points on last year (Heinrich Haussler, can you hear me?) Third of all, I kept the youngsters who didn’t do very well last year, counting on their maturing for this year. Fourth of all, I left off the popular GT contenders who do Fuck All in the early season and thus when the Grant Tours finally do roll around you are so far in the VDS hole that you can never get back up, despite the VDS grand tour points. Fifth of all….say, can you pass that fifth over here? Thusly, I present bethie’s team: Cunning Stunts
Mark Cavendish
Andy Schleck
Linus Gerdeman
Filippo Pozzato
Janez Brajkovic
Nick Nuyens
Martyn Maaskant
Christian Vandevelde
Edvald Boasson Hagen
Vincenzo Nibali
Bernhardt Eisel
Leife Hoste
Yaroslav Popovych
Gregory Rast
Mark Renshaw
Carlos Barredo Llamazales
Andre Greipel
Sylvester Szmyd
Samuel Dumoulin
Julian Dean
JJ Haedo
Juan Mauricio Soler Hernandez
Pavel Brut
Johan Van Summeren
Lars Bak

Picking through One-Point heap is challenging.
So much cannon fodder, so when you see a guy who’s popped off a few classics so far apart- Paris Roubaix 1997 and Paris Tours 2006, you think 2009 might be the years he pops off a few good wins before he retires.
Same with Graeme Brown.

I wouldn't claim to be an expert on mens' posteriors
but one of the names I would never have expected to see there is Jens! I would guess that his ass is pretty rough, craggy and weather-worn, a bit like the rest of him. Probably a deliberate policy so that when he rides away from someone else the last view they have is something that will discourage them from trying to catch up.

Who picked LA?
My whole strategy is based upon an OP smackdown and the failure of some favorites, because I don’t know enough to pick a perfect team.
But after the TOC I swapped Lance Armstrong for Basso. Not a huge fan, but I believe he might win a Giro with a 62km TT. Am I alone?

Big Aloha
Hi,
This is my first post to Podium Cafe. Thank you so much for this nice game.
Lance Armstrong is not mentioned here much, but guess what, he is back, and riding Giro+Tour double schedule, just like Contador. Plus, it appears those two are the ‘Astana Classic Squad’ as well, at least on days when the ‘Borat’ squad ice cream van gets lost on the way to the start.
Since tuesday, my computer has been up against something called a ‘vundo’ virus, and not always working. I entered my team really early on the 25th, thinking I was already too late – I didn’t study the 2009 season to date enough, nor the end of 2008 results either. Drug stories seem to shorten my cycling attention span at some point each summer.
Reading the comments makes me feel better about guys like Boom, who I am not that familiar with.
I took Weening because during the TOC Liggett identified Weening’s presence in a breakway, and then immediately called it a ‘serious move.’ For now, both him and Graeme Brown have to share a locker out in the hallway. It could be worse, Van Huffel doesn’t even get a locker.
Really wanted Cunego and Boonen – with a chance at 3 20ies I would have added Tom for sure. Very tough call for me Cav vs Boonen as definitely more of a fan of Tom than Cav. Still, hard not to project Cav as possible MVP here. Many other nice riders didn’t make the Big Aloha cuts, like Sylvain Chavanel, Gilbert and really many guys. I stuck with jersey hunters as much as possible, though I do have some hope for the spring classics too.
Good luck everyone!

Lance Armstrong is not mentioned here much

You MUST be new.

Thanks 'welcome'
I posted after 300 comments and only one person saying they didn’t take Lance, but that they did know someone that took Lance.
But thanks for your keen clarification that Lance Armstrong is discussed from time to time at the Podium Cafe.
So, when I said ‘here’ I meant this page and also the Lance subthread.
I hope that is okay, and from tomorrow onward you can start looking up at Big Aloha in the Standings.

People, sorry -
Big Aloha is gonna be a quiet team, always there in the standings, but not posting much.
I guess I should never have posted, but by posting only once I drew 2 fouls, one from someone so overly eager to school me as a newbie that he didn’t even stop to read what I wrote, and then now this Magnum comment, which simply is not funny enough, and also from someone eager to do some territorial pissing for whatever reason.
Hooray for Drewdotdot, who is surely a heavy-duty Podium Cafe insider. What a stud.
Now that I have figured out who Magnum is, I do like that my team name conjures up nostalgic memories, even if only memories of watching TV. I like Hawaii!
Podium cafe has the same problem as related sites (the one I read sometimes and never post at is for A’s baseball) – The regulars are not always very responsible or open and friendly to other fans/new posters. It’s water off a duck’s back to me, but still – some 14 year old kid joins, makes an enthusiastic and well-written post and then gets taken apart for ‘being stupid.’ That’s part of SB nation, too.
Weaklings!

Dude...
You got two people welcoming you. And being corrected or questioned on your comment is not the same thing as someone calling you stupid. I would hope you don’t stop commenting because you misunderstood that, but that is your call. My suggestion is that you read a few more posts and get a better feel of this place before you go silent.

Dude... really?
Respectfully… the title of this thread is “VDS Smack Day”. We’ve been waiting to give each other hell for the quality of the teams we chose for months now. This thread exploded! It’s classic! Be chill man… no one’s trying to shout you down. Just good natured ribbing from fellow cycling fans. Sorry if you took offense… none was intended.
Wait a sec… I just re read your posts.
No one called you “stupid”. Several welcomed you. No one joked around about your team until you said “look up at Big Aloha in the standings. Respect Big Aloha”.
For that we get called weaklings? Direct personal insult and attack?

I am suddenly feeling better about my oops the other day.
I mean this is great. You’ve got Jimbo in it thinking it was his team and he’s now checking out what he did to think you had a date with him. Albertina had no idea since it wasn’t her team. We all now know you have a crush on her and crashdan is having a field day. Sweetness. (-:

I'm thinking of changing my team name to
Backwards Smile, just to give Dan a migraine.
Zodiac – no offense meant, it was a specific comment to Chris’ use of Kamehameha, designed to draw out Crashdan, Jimbo, and others. We do that all the time and never directly insult each other.
We wait until the live race threads for that.

Dude
what you’re looking at now are the very last survivors of the Medusa, who’ve spent the whole winter clinging together and circling each other like penguins to give everyone a half chance of survival. And now, after spending three months up to our waists in the dark, cold, wet, and a little bit exhausted from fighting off the sharks, the jellyfish, the Bennalanches and the little fantasies of cobbles that we invent in our heads, we can finally see our own little Argus. We’re all a bit demob happy.

Welcome to our fun. I have to say that you’ve truly missed the fun here. I think you may need to read a few more threads before throwing jabs at the people who’ve come to call this their Cafe. You’re amongst some of the coolest and nicest people there are and if you’ve misread the dissing done in this smack thread then I hope you check out some of the other threads and stick around. These guys truly are great and I hope you stick around long enough to see that. We welcome everyone and new names are a joy to see. I’m sorry I missed saying hello when you first posted (damn work) but seriously, you’ve misjudged these guys. I consider them my friends and if you’re having a crap day, these are the ones that will make it all better with some laughs and good teasing. Hope you stick around long enough to read that really, it’s all about good cycling and good laughs. :-)

I went for Boonen over Cav based on my anticipation that Boonen will be stronger in April. Plus, while I figure Cav will pick up more points in the TdF than he did last year, I figure Boonen is a sure bet to do the same (barring injury or another ill-timed snortfest). This means, of course, this will be the year Cav shows us all that, as good as he is at sprinting, he’s really the master of cobbles….
I also decided to take a flyer on Popo figuring that he’ll return to his Disco form now that he’s back under Bruyneel.
Did anybody not pick Haussler?
