Very sad news

and my first thought on reading that was “not another one”. L’Equipe has a few more details.

by Monty. on Feb 5, 2009 6:07 AM EST reply actions

yes, very sad indeed...

this made me shed a few tears – i didn’t think doping first as, whatever the cause, it’s just too sad to lose a young man like that…

Translation

The Belgian cyclist Frederiek Nolf (Topsport Vlaanderen) was found dead in his hotel room Thursday morning, announced Eddy Merckx, one of the course directors of the Tour of Qatar. Frederiek Nolf, about to celebrate his 22nd birthday on the 10th of February, was found lifeless around 9 AM local time (7AM French time) in the 14th floor room of the Ritz-Carlton that he shared with one of his teammates, compatriot Kristof Goddaert. This roommate, realizing that Frederiek Nolf was not waking up, alerted his directeur sportif, Jean-Pierre Heynderrickx.

“I shook Frederiek’s leg, telling him to wake up,” explained [Mr. Heynderrickx]. “But I quickly perceived that something was not normal. I took his hand, and it was cold. There was no pulse. I therefore told Kristof to leave the room because there was a major problem.” A few minutes later, a doctor confirmed the death.

"Frederiek was on form"
Asked about any previous signs of fatigue in Nolf, Jean-Pierre Heynderrickx was clear. “Nothing alerted us to a health problem,” he emphasized. “Frederiek was in top form. Last night, I was joking with him just until he went to bed at 10 PM.” His roomate noticed nothing during the night, and Frederiek Nolf was found lying on his back, in his normal sleeping position. The DS further declared, “our riders undergo medical tests four times a year at the University of Louvain (in Belgium) and all Frederiek’s parameters / stats have always been normal. What has happened was completely unexpected.”

The body of the rider should [will?] be quickly repatriated to Belgium, where his parents and his fiancee were quickly notified by the Topsport directors. An autopsy should be [must be?] done to determine the cause of death.

This was Nolf’s second pro season with [deep inside, at /in the breast of] l’équipe Topsport Vlaanderen – Mercator, a Continental Pro team (one category behind ProTour). According to Eddy Merckx, the 5th stage of the Tour of Qatar, which takes place on the Camel Race Track at Doha Foundation, will be "neutralized". "In respect to Frederiek Nolf, the riders will ride the stage as a cortege", he said. Topsport has left the race. This death of a rider in his sleep isn’t the first. n’est pas une première. En 2003, the Frenchman Fabrice Salanson died at 23 years of age in the same circumstances during the Tour of Germany. (Avec AFP)

That is a real shame

As sad as it is, the first thing that came to my mind was “when are they going to learn”

I'm fighting against that

given that there are a variety of hard-to-diagnose genetic problems (for example) that can also lead to sudden death in healthy people. Here’s one. And here’s a list.

Also, the deaths in the heyday of EPO (mentioned elsewhere by Chris) were apparently a direct result of sludge-thick blood (hematocrit of 60%+). It’s hard to believe that anyone in this day could or would dope undetected, to that level.

It’s a tragedy either way, but beyond that, I for one plan to regard it as a random tragedy, unless my nose is rubbed in some other explanation.

by JFS_PGH on Feb 5, 2009 10:30 AM EST up reply actions

I'm holding out hope there is a non-doping reason for this tragedy

But, I’m expecting to find it is somehow related to a complication related to Blood doping or that new substance mentioned in the piece about Biatholon doping. I figure its not EPO in the traditional sense.

Just a guess

But the doping thing seems unlikely here. Too much is known at this point. Doesn’t make sense. But there’s no way you would want to rule it out (from a fact-seeking standpoint).

+1

Of course EPO came to mind immediately, but how could one get to that hematocrit today? Many seemingly fit athletes pass from congenital heart defects. Hank Gathers comes to mind.

Regardless, his family must be devastated. I feel for them.

by johnw on Feb 5, 2009 11:11 AM EST up reply actions

This is awful

I must say that most young athletes who suddenly die do so under stress, i.e. in a game like Hank Gaithers. Its really rare for any 21 year old to die in their sleep.

by ursula on Feb 5, 2009 11:55 AM EST up reply actions

not so rare. See second link in my last post, above.

A very low resting heart rate can actually worsen the effect of a minor beat abnormality, I’m thinking.

….I will ride in his honour tonight and gain strength from his spirit.

errrr....am i supposed to sign this??

OT, assuming the B-tests confirm the positives,

it is not a new wonder drug that caught the biathlets, it’s apparently our well known EPO enemy, CERA…

Back to the topic, please don’t throw assumptions before this has been examined properly.

by Bruce Suomi on Feb 5, 2009 1:18 PM EST up reply actions

is this new news? Got a source, and their source?

Cause it looks like the first report said CERA, next said “new,” and then off we go on a second round of contradictions as they pick up each others’ stories…

by JFS_PGH on Feb 5, 2009 1:21 PM EST up reply actions

sorry, Finnish tv-sport news

interviewed the WADA guy yesterday, so no links (yet). He was mum about the products and the names, but confirmed the 3 Russian A-positives. Some Russian sites which were cited here said it was CERA, but not a fact yet.
The B-samples are tested the 8th and 9th, analyzing them takes 3 days, which, according to our AD Doc speaks for EPO.

I feel guilty speculating

presumably we’ll know the facts soon enough. But to relate another story my old training partner was a top level athlete who nearly died of deep vein thrombosis after an 8 hour flight. Fortunately he lived, but the resultant damage ended his athletics career. My condolences to his family and friends.

A real shame indeed

Joe Public surely links the case with doping too. Hopefully the autopsy will give an explanation that reaches Joe Public too.

respects for Frederiek

L’Equipe has another article here, translated below:
The riders of the Tour of Qatar observed a minute of silence Thursday at the start of the 5th tape in tribute to Belgian rider Frederiek Nolf, found dead Thursday in his Doha hotel room. The 147 kilometer stage between the Camel Race Track and Doha was neutralized by the race directors out of respect for the rider. The platoon rode in convoy and in silence about thirty kilometers at slow speed and a heavy atmosphere. A ceremony of homage is scheduled tonite at 18.00 Doha time at the Ritz-Carlton said Christian Prudhomme, the director of the race.

Frederiek Nolf will be taken to Belgium shortly, via Paris, according to the Ambassador of Belgium who went to the stage start today. The Belgian Embassy will open a collection of condolences for the riders and followers of the Tour of Qatar that want to leave a message to the parents and the fiancé of the deceased. Team Topsport Vlaanderen received condolences from the race directors and the Qatar Cycling Federation. The Flemish Minister of Sport also sent its condolences.

A frozen 'cross ride from this last weekend. As you may be aware we have had siberian conditions here in the UK with a low of -14 degrees centigrade here on saturday morning. It was a beautiful sunny morning so i layered up and set off for a snowy 'cross ride along a roman road. I checked the thermometer when i got back to find it had been -10 throughout the ride! I had a lot of fun though and the views were spectacular.
