a sort of out there request/idea for PdC ATOC

I was reading the txbra fora, like I'm wont to do, when I saw the following post:

"Hey at the last years tour de Gruene, a child's book called "Marta and the bicycle" by Germano Zullo was given to Lance Armstrong to sign and ended up lost. This book belongs to a 9 year old boy that has collected autographs of many great cyclists. It has been alot of work collecting these autographs. If you have this book or know the person that does, I really would appreciate its return. Unfortunately my sons name is not written in the book except with one particular personalized autograph by the current world champion Alessandro Ballan. I do offer a reward, but most importantly you will make one little sad boy very happy.

Thanks guys."

Big whoop, right?  Well, the poster is an old college friend of mine--whose ex-husband is also an old friend.  So, I guess I fell sorta connected to the 9 year-old too.

What's the idea?  This: I'm not sure HOW I'd get a copy of Marta and the bicycle to anyone heading to ATOC, (although I'd be happy to paypal folks), and ordinarily I wouldn't want to impose, but well . . . if a copy of such a book were to wind up in some PdCers hands (with a sharpie or two), and that PdCer were to wander the start areas trolling for autographs, I'm too poor to provide any major reward, but talk about a karma boost (and if you're ever in Austin and stop in at the Barton Springs Bicycle Sport Shop . . .)

Am I being more than usually presumptious???

Someone there all week, especially the earlier stages would have the better opportunities.

If no one else thinks they can offer up some help or we couldn’t team up and share the fun, I’d be happy to try for a few for you (assuming this book is something we can easily and quickly acquire) for the stage or two starts I’ll be at. Anyone that will be there at starts, that by far is the easiest (versus say the finishes) to get autographs. I’ve gotten a few the past few years at other races but I have no idea what it’s like at the TOC. Much bigger than most events. I think I can safely say I can get a few outside of the race if we have a little time to gather some for him.

Was the book lost when given to Lance or lost after getting his autograph? I would imagine the little one was crushed when he realized it was MIA.

Don't know

I haven’t seen Mary Paige in a couple of years, and I haven’t e-mailed her about this because I was thinking it might be a cool surprise—

Amazon has lots of copies available (but only 1 directly in stock) of the book.

I wonder if a faster route would be to check local book stores to make sure we'd have it in time.

I like this idea of yours a lot. :-) Could be very fun.

Oooh, this is a cool idea

We should totally find a way to do it. If the book went to the prologue or an early stage, it could travel by express mail down the coast, too, easily in time for Solvang, where there will be a bunch of peeps.

Hmm, wonder if we could get it to any of the other races this year, too. Fun project.

If we can get it to the early stages, I think we have a few doing the whole race

so we could keep sending it along to the next stages. If we all made a point of getting one autograph each, it would be quick on each person’s part. :-)

Heh

We can blockade him in Los Olivos during the ITT. I should be drunk enough to try this.

About how book got lost:

“The book was a very sad deal. I have taken it to the Vuelta, 2 world championships, 1 Tour of Missouri and 1 Tour of California. Every year I come back and present it to Maxwell and tell him this is his gift. He has enjoyed the book immensly so it has made him sad. I guess also it is something that I always wanted him to have and remember that I had created for him.

The book should never have left my hands. Marty had talked to John Corioth to set up a time for Maxwell to meet Lance, but they were too protected. Maxwell waited for a while and when they came out of their hotel we asked Corioth to get it signed and he is the one that actually lost it. I knew better. Last year I gave it to the bus driver of the Spanish team at the worlds and the following day it came back with Valverde, Sevilla, Contador etc signatures. Guess I assumed it would have the same result. Dumb mother.”

okay, i'll find the book.

I’m going to check with local bookstores this afternoon and see if I can get it.

There are like a bazillion copies on abe, also. So, if I can’t get it locally, I’ll order one rush shipped here.

Now, once I have book, who wants to be first? Maybe I should send it to Lyne first? Then, she could hand it off in Solvang? That might work easylike.

Classics aren't that far away...

We could do some coordinating and I could send it with PopUp and you girls could work your magic. :-)

hey nikki...

I can’t buy it locally here, so can you order it up? And then, start things off in Solvang?

meant to add:

there is a copy at amazon, which would be the fastest way to go about it.

The book is ordered.

I’ll have it by the end of the week and I’ll bring it with me when I come out.

I’ve reached out to a couple guys to see if they’d be willing to help out. :-)

R Mc, if you could email me or hit me at facebook with the little boy’s name that would be great. Plus the suggestion of a quick pic and small note would be helpful. I will print it out and put it with the book. Can’t make any promises with what we’ll get but this kind of autograph seeking is way too fun not to do what we can. :-) And don’t worry about the $, it was under $15 so I think my wallet will be just fine. LOL.

and they will be happy to sign it. Fingers crossed timing and such works out. :-)
I’m thinking with the bunch of us, we should be able to get a “few”. LOL. Good stuff.

Well I won't be at any of the races, and won't be of any help

but just reading this thread makes me smile. Very cool that so many people are willing to go out of their way to help the boy.

Cute little book. The graphics had me cracking up. Can’t wait to see where some choose to sign. ha ha.

I went with old fashioned emails to give some heads up for some help. :-)

I’m working on Jelly Belly, Garmin, Columbia, and Astana. (Not expecting all riders but a few of my favorites I think are on board.) Once I get the bunch I’ve emailed with, I’m hoping some help from others can take it for a few more.

A frozen 'cross ride from this last weekend. As you may be aware we have had siberian conditions here in the UK with a low of -14 degrees centigrade here on saturday morning. It was a beautiful sunny morning so i layered up and set off for a snowy 'cross ride along a roman road. I checked the thermometer when i got back to find it had been -10 throughout the ride! I had a lot of fun though and the views were spectacular.
