Ronde van het Groene Hart

Today will see the third edition of the Eneco Ronde van het Groene Hart (Round of the Green Heart). This race wants to show the world how beautiful Holland's so-called green heart is. This is the more or less rural/agricultural area right in between the ring of cities that form the Randstad. Since this race passes right through my home town I think it deserves some PdC love, even though it’s not a VDS race.

More on the flip.

Star-divide

The riders will ride 204 km on a pancake flat course. A sprinter will probably win here with Graeme Brown, Gert Steegmans, Danilo Napolitano and Robert Forster being the top contenders. Outsiders could be Wim Stroetinga, Roy Sentjes, Bobby Traksel or Frank Vandenbroucke (just kidding).

All information can be found on the, Dutch only, race website. It says live coverage will be on starting 15.00 hour local time. I’m not sure if this will be geo-restricted. The race passes through my hometown within the first hour so you don’t have to be on the lookout for PdC signs on the road I’m afraid. I’ll try to get some picture online later though.

Yesterday part of the course was used in a recreational ride honouring one of our most celebrated riders. The Joop Zoetemelk classic attracted more than 2000 recreational riders and the old man himself gave the start sign.

Joop is the man on the right. The other guy is a local politician responsible for sport.

Back problems.

We had 2 men in an escape but a closed railway crossing barred their way to glory.

I saw them live!

I went to have a look with my 3-year old son. Nice way to introduce him to cycling. He has cheered me on in the past during local races but the many policemen and the helicopter made this a thrilling experience for him.

They were going fast so it was difficult to discern any individual riders. A lot of Skil-Shimano up front pacing. Trying to reel in the break of two guys from national teams.

It’s somehow a surreal experience. Normal life is stopped for a few minutes, the cyclists whisk by, and life continues. Most spectators only happen to be there and don’t know what’s going on. Funny.

Flat as a table but the crosswinds and headwinds looked hard. I was surprised to see Omloop take the sprint over Brown.

Offficial result

1: Omloop (Palmans-Cras)
2: Brown (Rabobank)
3: Vierhouten (Vacansoleil)
4: Forster (Milram)
5: Traksel (Vacansoleil)
6: Westra (Vacansoleil)
7: Muller (Milram)
8: Mouris (Vacansoleil)
9: Stroetinga (Milram)
10: Mol (Vacansoleil)
11: Martens (Rabobank)
12: Van Groen (Vacansoleil)
13: Van Zandbeek (Van Vliet-EBH-Elshof)
14: Stamsnijder (Rabobank)
15: Knaven (Milram)

Nice result for Geert Omloop. He was voted the most aggressive rider and won the sprint while he clearly was not the favorite in the 7-men front group.

Katusha: Trying to get Steegmans some training for bigger races? Didn’t work out too well. Clearly they know I chose him for VDS and they are just messin’ with me in advance by having him DNF today.

Gert did only score in two races last year.

80 points in Paris-Nice and 115 at the Tour. Okay, he has to add a third race this year to earn his cost (needs 267 points), but it’s early days yet.

(In other words…yeah, he’s on my team, too. But I’m an optimist.)

Silence-Lotto vs Katusha

Silence-Lotto clearly won this contest by placing their first man in 17th position at 7,49 and losing only one rider to the dreaded DNF.
Katusha’s top finisher came in 20th and saw 5 riders hit the brakes early.

Vacansoleil really went all out today, too bad they lacked a sprinter to finish the job.

He says it is Flemish to use RVV for Ronde Van Vlanderen

Or an anglicism taken from Flemish. Because the Dutch use a small v for “van.” Thus RvV not RVV. (That’s based on using “van” in names? I know we’ve seen the same name written both ways, either capitalized and separate from the main part of the name, and small letter / run together with the main name.)

by JFS_PGH on Mar 26, 2009 8:14 AM EDT up reply actions

Sorry, it was more of a tease than really true,

because no one in their right mind would write RvV. But still, Dutch titles (books, songs, events, whatever) should normally NOT be all capitalised like they they are in English. Only the first letter is a capital, not the first letter of every word. ‘Vlaanderen’ of course does need a capital because it’s a name.

You’re right about people names: usually the interjections in Dutch names are in lowercase: Ricardo van der Velde. If only the last name is used, the first word is in uppercase: Van der Velde. Usually in Flanders they concatenate all parts of the name: Willy Vandersteen. When they don’t, usually every part has a capital: Mark Van Lombeek.

Phew.

by Ed K on Mar 23, 2009 9:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes.

The official language of Holland and Flanders is the same: Dutch. Just like the official language of Wallonia is French but it sounds a bit different from what you hear at the Elysée.

Certainly all the editorial (though not necessarily forum/chat) pieces on websites from Flanders are in ‘normal’ Dutch so would not pose a problem for Dutch-English translators.

Ahhhhhhhhh!

This I did not know. It all makes sense now.

by Ed K on Mar 23, 2009 10:22 PM EDT up reply actions

To my ears, with the distinct r's

Flemish is to Nederlands Dutch as Marseille french is to Paris french. And a strong accent has a more sing-song quality (especially compared to, say a more northern, Groenings Dutch accent, which is quite flat in tone). Like Schwyzerdütsch vs. German. When I overhear a strong Belgian accent (or maybe it’s a particular part of Belgium?), I think I’m hearing a Swiss dialect until I start to pick out Dutch words. Maastricht Dutch actually has quite a bit of inflection too (again, to my foreign ear). I have to admit (shamefully) that in some ways I find the slower, more sing-song quality of Flemish easier to follow than the Nederlands Dutch of my husband / husband’s family. (There, I said it.)

Mutually comprehensible but very different at a level comparable to Indian english vs. US english.

by JFS_PGH on Mar 26, 2009 8:29 AM EDT up reply actions

What?

Maastricht Dutch? Don’t let the Sjengen there hear you. Limburgian is an official language! Nobody knows what it is exactly, with people from different parts of this tiny province having difficulties understanding each other, but it is a language!

Actually

all this cocktalk reminds me of the one and only time I went to Holland, with my basketball team during high school, we went to play a few exhibition games. On our first night in Amsterdam, we stayed in a place called the Cok Hotel – no joke! (You can imagine the fun a bunch of 16- and 17-yr-olds had with that.) The only problem was the Cok caught fire that night – again, no joke – an electrical fire, so not many flames but plenty of smoke. Me and some of my teammates were on the 2nd or 3rd floor, can’t remember, what I do remember is that it was next to impossible to breathe. Sooner or later the fire dept. showed up and we escaped to safety through the window and down a ladder. Made the front page of the local papers! Also, every time we blew our noses for the next few days it was all black. And a good time was had by all!
