Vuelta a Castilla y León Stage Two.... Live!

Spain_medium

After yesterday's stage, who knows what will happen today?

lol

I do!  Today might be the decisive stage as it's that pesky 28.3 km ITT.  And now that there have been a handful of time trials this year we can look at the favorites for this race: Contador, Leipheimer, Zabriskie, Vandevelde, and Menchov with Valverde being, as always a chrono wild card.

Which means that someone else will win this race.

Go to Cycling Fans for a link to the video and tracker.

One final thing. I won't be around for this stage so if there needs to be a post stage thread or another live thread (doubtful) someone else needs to do it!

I thought they could take certain ones, out of competition?

Not sure why I thought that was the issue with JV’s eye. If he dropped out, he could get the shot for the bee sting, but if he stayed in, he could not? Anyone else? I doubt they could take the really good stuff but at some point, certain meds would have to be allowed right? Thus, the in-competetion versus out-of-competition lists?

Clement

Struttin’ some stuff. Good ride. Danielson seems to have found some vigor too, for now, anyway.

Leipheimer really amazes me in the TT’s for such a small guy. Last great small TT guy was Mottet, and that was a loooong time ago.

So with Lance injured,

it seems unlikely that he will be in top form for the Giro. If that is the case, should Astana ask Leipheimer or Kloden to try to win it for them.

I think Levi can take Basso on the TT.

Question is, can he stay on Basso’s wheel going up the mountains? Also, will JB provide a strong enough team to run down the breakaways.

Don't know if that's good enough.

Remember, JB used to be able to rely on Devolder, Gusev, and Hincappie. He needs some better support. Unfortunately he is obligated to maintain a Kazakh development squad. I’d like to see JB sign a guy like Zirbel.

Good points

Probably two more for Astana: Brajkovic and then there’s Lance who probably won’t make it all the way. And since Lance is racing the other couple of riders will be decent.

Liquigas will have THE team at the Giro, no doubt.

but

My understanding is

that Contador is not riding the Giro, just the Tour and Vuelta this year

by Le Comte on Mar 24, 2009 12:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I dunno...

Levi looked vaguely awesome against a lot of these guys in the mountains at ToC. I understand there’s a month and a half’s difference in form. But the peanut can get over hills just fine these days.

Plus seriously, has he ever had a better chance of winning a Grand Tour than this Giro?

by samboo on Mar 24, 2009 3:21 PM EDT up reply actions

remember the vuelta..

Levi would have finished with the EXACT same time as AC without the time bonuses. If he had been on a different team, you could argue he would have won it, had he chased Alberto on some of the mountain stages. Levi showed his climbing prowess in the vuelta, and with that in mind he could absolutely win the Giro. I personally think the long tt suits him much better than Basso.

Thoughts so far

1) Lance hype aside, the main point of contention on Astana is probably between Levi and Bert, possibly the two best stage racers going these days. (Basso might have something to say about this.) The problems in figuring out IF there is a bone of rivalry between the two are a few:

1) The press thinks it’s all about Lance and his rivalry with Bert.

2) Levi is very cagey in his remarks.

3) Bert doesn’t speak English.

So the next two days may reveal a lot about Bert and Levi’s relationship what with both stages ending on the mountaintop. Will Bert attack Levi or will Bert let Levi win this race? This does have important implications for July in France.

2) Following it’s nice Murcia race, Rabobank is showing loads of team strength. Clement finally has a decent TT, and considering how well he climbed in Murcia he’s an interesting figure for the future as Rabo does a make over on their new rider. Menchov is right where you expect him to be. So the questions is, can Rabobank successfully attack Astana?

3) Then there’s Garmin, also showing a nice race. Let’s see them hang with Astana and Rabo.

4) As for the others, the TT went as expected. Valverde, Sastre, and Mosquera all had meh TT’s. Cervelo and Xabbeo both expected that, I’m sure, and in a Grnd Tour they would look to use the many other stages to make some sort of comeback. Here they will send out a flier on a break as there isn’t time to take the overall with all that skill before them. They should be happy with a top ten placing in the end.

5) Caisse d’Epargne is a bit out to sea since they emphasize Valverde so much. They really could use Ivan Gutierrez to hang in the mountains.

by ursula on Mar 24, 2009 3:11 PM EDT up reply actions

my 2 cents (and btw, your numbers are screwed) :)

1. Lance is the biggest news, we saw that when most of the press abandoned with him yesterday, so yes, it’s only hype. (too bad I picked him)

2. agree

3. he does, just not in public

4. Not sure, they’ll probably screw it up somehow

5. Bubble boy? Wish him luck. Hope DZ does well along with CVV.

6. agree

7. Caisse’s future is in Coni’s hands. Valverde was 20th today, not too bad for a fairly flat TT, Gutierrez was 6th, so he should be a good help for Valverde(iirc he can also climb?)

by Bruce Suomi on Mar 24, 2009 5:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Bert speaks bad English...

thing is, there are two mountain stages to be won.
I reckon someone will attack Astana, say Zeke, or maybe Euskie? probably not for GC, but a stage win would be nice. so either Levi or Bert can say they are not attacking teammates…

certainly interesting, can’t wait to see how it turns out.
