The Belgian Word of the day -

Rustig (ru-stig)

adj. -

1. calm, tranquil, quiet

2. At peace

3. Free from strain or tension.

Translation -

  • German: ruhig
  • French: tranquille
  • Italian: tranquillo , tranquillo, tranquilla
  • Spanish: tranquilo , tranquila
  •

Aparently this is derived from Dutch. Not that my Flemish is worth a damn so I couldn't tell 'ya if it there is another word in Flemish. I suppose there maybe, but I had to email a friend who lives over in Belgium for this one.

It has been poking at me for a while now, so there you go.

I love how you Dutch just mixed German with Caveman talk and created a language, fascinating ;)

    Anything,

To distinquish us from our loud, barbaric, beerswallowing neighbours to the east. ;-)

Yes, the Danes really are barbaric aren't they?

    Make that

loud, barbaric, beerswallowing, geographically challenged neighbours to the east.

Wouldn't that be to the south for you Jens?

But you Swedes are lucky, you have a whole sea between you and them.

    Yes but the drawback

is that there is a whole sea between us and cheap quality beer as well.

(and I was sort of joking about Phil implying Denmark being Hollands eastern neighbour, ahrgh geography, forget it)

    I got the joke

But I thought it might be fun to team up against those pesky germans here.

It’s an outrage. Tons of Dutch megatalents have been riping for years and now a bloody German suddenly comes to play a leading role in the spring classics. When will the hurting stop?

Ahh yes, europes favourite pastime. Team up against the germans

A new day, a new Belgian word

My favorite word in Flemish (It does not exist in Dutch) is ‘goesting’. Start with the typical harsh ‘g’ and proceed with an ‘oo’. Once you have bridged those pitfalls common English pronounciation will bring you home safe.

In Dutch when you feel like doing something you can say you have ‘zin’ in something (ice cream, riding a bike etc.etc.)
The flemish word for this concept is ‘goesting’. But here it can be used broader, one can say: I have goesting. Which means that he’s tranquillo and ready for action or something.

I have seen it used in cycling stories. The rider had ‘goesting’ so he went out in an early breakaway.
