Nice write up
but what you miss out is that Cunego rode like an idiot today. He and Perez Serpa were the two on form riders of the day. They pulled away the initial break of seven on Monte Trebbio. Visconti missed the break at first and had to bridge up pretty much by himself, towing Niemiec along for the ride. A few hundred metres further along when they hit that sharper climb Cunego and Perez Serpa took off again and they had a lead of 35s by the top of the hill. They held that lead all the way down what looks like an interesting descent (as in keep Franck away) and right up to the final k. Then the little prince decide that he’d rather have a stage win than the overall, so he sat on Serpa’s wheel until jumping him 200m from the line. Serpa knew that he would probably lose the sprint so he got his revenge by slowing down, so that they lost half of the lead they had. The chasing group didn’t have time to get themselves organised on the small bit of flat through town and wouldn’t have made up a single second on their own actions.
Is this sufficiently Schleckproofed?

Don't think it was idiotic, a stage win is all he is probably trying to get out of this race
and it was guaranteed , Serpa sprints about as well as Arnold Schwarzenegger speaks “American English”. While the GC can still change with three days left. The GC is more important for a guy riding on a 2nd class team who won’t win much bigger races, like Visconti this year, then it does to a guy who is expected to win some huge races this year, Cunego. This isn’t that important of a race for Cunego and he is using it more as prep for the Ardennes and the Giro. His goal will have been to win a stage and that he has done, you probably woulnd’t see this if he had a chance at the pink jersey.

Maybe
but I always think that holding the leader’s jersey, even if only for a couple of days, has more kudos than a stage win.
Big races, PT or GT races probably, but I doubt it for a regional race like this
at least not for a rider of Cunego’s stature. I think for a guy like him, whose won some of the biggest events in cycling, stage wins at these races are the goal, and if they win the GC it’s a bonus.

Si
If it were the last day of the stage race, and he gave up the GC for a stage win, then I’d be saying he was stupid. But there are still hilly stages yet to ride where he can bring back 9 seconds on Visconti. Visconti, so does not climb as well as Cunego. Little dude got a win. Pretty sweet.
Wonder how close Cunego is on the overall?
Great result for him. I noticed that his team didn’t do that well in the TTT but seeing him take this stage shows that he’s got very good form. Maybe this will finally be the year for him.
+1
i’m happy about this one, too – would love to see the little guy finally have a season that matches his potential…
You may very well think that; I couldn't possibly comment.
which isn't to say
that he hasn’t had decent seasons before this (2008 wasn’t half bad considering his hard luck) but i’d like to see him consistently front and centre…
You may very well think that; I couldn't possibly comment.
He was pretty unlucky in 2008
Just imagine if he’d won that Worlds last year instead of Ballan, throw that on top of his Amstel and Lombardy wins and it probably would have been considered a career year – or at least a close 2nd to 2004.
This year I’m expecting 1st at either Liege or Fleche, podium at the Giro and 1st at the Worlds. Pretty high expectations but I think he’s got it in him.
agreed
i was just looking back over his palmares and last year was darn close to being a career topper – as you say, pretty unlucky. but he sure stuck it out – i admire riders who fight through a long season, and he had to bounce back more than once from adversity. my TdF highlight from last year was him riding to the finish with his teammates’ help after that nasty crash on stage 18, and still making the cutoff time.
and i do think he has it in him to meet your expectations :)

Did he pulls a Pedro Delgado
and miss his start time in the TTT? To lose 6 minutes in two stages non-mountain stages is pretty suprising. Guess he’s strictly going for stages wins and not the overall.
Oh, thanks Gavia
I thought that was a little strange. If tomorrow is another mountain stage he may be able to wrest control of the race away from Visconti. Wonder what tomorrow’s profile is like?

it would be silly to even think of putting LA as leader if Levi is, not with the form LA will have. I think this is the best chance Levi has had to win a GT, last years Vuelta has given LL more confidence than ever it appears.

"It’s disappointing. Second place is the first loser."
~Heinrich Haussler (GERMANY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) Cervélo TestTeam
Did some research and found out
that the final 40km or so of today’s stage are the same as those of the Giro’s stage 15. They climbed the Mont Casale and then Trebbio, with the summit 24km before the finish, just as they will do in the Giro. The only difference is the stage at the Giro is surrounded by the San Luca finish the day before and 2 mountain top finishes the 2 stages after it, but should still be an exciting day.
"It’s disappointing. Second place is the first loser."
~Heinrich Haussler (GERMANY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) Cervélo TestTeam
After what has occured at the ToC and P-N, I'm starting to like these type of stages as well
the guarentee that the escaped riders will be caught isn’t there anymore, riders can attack and stay away down a descent like LL did or can attack downhill and cause damage like Lulu did. Even the 50km descent to finish the Cuneo-Pinerolo stage looks enticing. I still rather have mountain top finishes but the Giro will have plenty of those.
"It’s disappointing. Second place is the first loser."
~Heinrich Haussler (GERMANY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) Cervélo TestTeam
Depends on level of team control
If there’s a lot of control from the race leader’s team, these stages can be big group finish. But I do like that they give the good descenders a chance to play their game. Very often leads to fun racing. Better still, if there’s a bit more flat before the finish for a little extra drag racing.
But yeah, agreed, this should make for a fun stage to watch come May.
Not a result but the track worlds started today
and continue tonight(if you are in Europe), they include one MSR winner, I belive his name is Cavierdish or something like that. If you have Eurosport they are showing it tonight at 19:45 CET live. I will so be watching it.

Don't the spanish organizers understand how this wors?
If they provided good free online vidoe earlier, and they added cobbles to the stage with a dash of rain then it would get more attention here. Short of that they need to schedule their race around the beloved one day cobble classics that are preferred in these parts.

from Cervelo's press release
25-Mar-2009: Dwars door Vlaanderen
Kevin Van Impe (Quick Step) was able to hold off Niko Eeckhout (An Post Sean Kelly), Tom Boonen (Quick Step) and Heinrich Haussler to win the 200 km Dawrs door Vlaanderen today in Belgium.
Jean-Paul van Poppel, Sports Director for today’s race, commented afterwards, “It was a very cold day and many of the attacks were by the riders to keep warm. Andreas Klier was in the first attack of the day.”
“Heinrich made an attack with 30 km to go, which caught everyone by surprise, which eventually QuickStep was able to neutralise. He tried to attack in the last 7 km but was unable to shake the other riders and finished 4th just after Tom Boonen. All in all, the team did a good ride.”
I wonder what the Q's press release looked like
probably something like “the unbeatable Quickstep team brashly embarassed the puny opponents from other far yonder locations, and the little Bübchen’s also from Belgium(Lotto I think it is). The thoroughly dominant Kevin Van Impe sprinted by the utterely unimpressive opponent(can’t remember his name but we are now scouting him). The emaculate Van Impe had enough time to stop and fart in his opponents face and still win, something he would have done had his opponents jersey not already been CSFugly. The then cobbled iron warrior himself(to early to say greates of all time? I belive not, Tom Boonen, the cobbled GOAT!) Tom”cobbled GOAT"Boonen easily sprinted around his pityful opponent, the confused(Australian or German, what is dag nammit?) Heinrich Haussler. Tom had worked in perfect harmony with Haussler and sprinted around him because he’s just better, not because he had more energy. Then just to dick with the rest of the peloton, we purposely finished 5th and 7th, although we could have easily finished 1st,2nd,3rd,4th,5th….we liked the odd numbered position better. We will see you again on Saturday for the E3, which we will also dominate"

Except for position number 1, which is reserved for the cobbled GOAT
we have actually already been told by the E3 organizers that cobbled GOAT’s name has already been engraved into the trophy, something which has also been completed at P-R, seeing that the Penna Pasta and Peace Loving Pansy will be in horrid form or not even racing, the Pasta guy has herpies I believe. How utterly embarassing, at Quickstep, the first thing you learn is not to get herpies. We are just an elite constitution that very few can access.

Sounds like a good day for the van Poppels
His son, the imaginatively named Boy Van Poppel, won the first stage of the Tour of Normandy this morning.
QS didn't want to pull a Rabo
“That was a really hard day. Haussler was really strong. We had the numbers, but didn’t want to do what Rabobank did in the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad,” Boonen said, referring to the race on March 1 when Haussler and Rabobank’s Sebastian Langeveld were in a break, but Rabobank chased it down, thinking they had better chances with Nick Nuyens, Joost Posthuma and Juan Antonio Flecha.

Speaking of which
this week we had the Argentinian national championships. Did anyone here pick Pablo Brun or Juan Curuchet. Or is that 200 VDS points wasted?
Actually, there were *several* big time results / upsets today.
The French Team beat the Brits in the men’s team sprint.
Simona Krupeckaite of Lithuania not only beat Anna Meares in the 500m TT, she did it in WR time.
and Alison Shanks of New Zealand won the Women’s pursuit, which is another fairly stunning upset.
You are looking *extremely* beatable is what it's coming to.
Which is good for the sport, much as I admire what you all have done for it.
Yes, you are actually right.
Pendleton didn’t expect to win yesterday anyway though, and I didn’t think the team sprinters would beat the French without Hoy. Wendy should have won the pursuit though….oh well!
