Where are you from?
I was surprised at how many VDS teams are listed for the competition this year. Was 198 the final count?
But only about 20-30 of us regularily post on here. And out of that group, I only really know who a handful are and where they are from.
I know that Sui Juris, MegaBeth plus two more and myself are from DC.
Jens/Sweden? Lynne/Canada? Chris, Gavia/WA State? Frinking/Netherlands? Albertina/Spain, Italy? Flatbagger/OZ?
Who are all these peeps and where are you from? Pray tell!
I'll start!
DemonCats- John- Kensington, MD (inner burbs DC)

What? Can't you tell?
I got jealous of Jens’ and Bruce’s cool flags in their icons, so made mine the flag of the glorious state of Indiana (that’s tongue in cheek). Not from here, but have lived here for almost 10 years now. It’s very flat.
I’m originally an East Coaster, born in the mountains of Upstate NY, and have also lived in Vermont, Maryland, Colorado, New Mexico, Scotland, Massachusetts, and Virginia.
Speaking of the DC area: I graduated from UMCP; later lived in Reston for a couple of years when my husband got his first teaching job at George Mason.

I also have a raging rag
it’s like a terrible towel with red-splatters, for blood. Sold by the local women’s roller derby teams. (Why yes, we have 4 of those. I think several of them come from good steelworker stock, too.)
So you’re one of the lamented “lost youth of Pittsburgh.” Well, if you ever want domestic cobbles, betcha we can find some arrowheads or shell middens here to keep you professionally occupied… OK, no, it’s not the same. But I have heard occasional anecdotes about artifacts in the caves along the yough. Suspect they flood / wash out too often to be fully rewarding, but you never know.

umm
I wasn’t allowed candy as a child… and I’m probably younger than Kelly… There is a at least one other here older than I, and I suspect after perusing this thread a couple more… But oy, there are a lot of kids here, and I say that as a positive thing actually since I like to see them following something besides xbox and nintendo.
You have me a some margin I believe now.

i’m not keen to be the granddaddy here, but i have a few days on Sean so i might be. i have to remind myself what my chrono age is sometimes cuz is doesn’t seem real and it doesn’t seem to match who i am and what i do. i still play hard and train hard and try to keep up with the kids – and like you, i think it’s great that there are plenty on here. in fact, it’s one thing i really like about this place and about the younger gen of cyclists i know – the mix and the fact that the numbers don’t matter

If you pronounce it correctly..
In English it’s ‘Djonathhan’ or something like that.. In Dutch their is a real J.. So pronouncing Jonathan in Dutch is a lot harder.. You’d better start exercising ;)

Lou...
My name is Lou (or ‘Louise’, if we’re being formal). I’m in Sydney, Australia… but I keep threatening to move to Belgium – ‘cause that seems to be the only way that I’ll get access to decent bloody cycling coverage, and at a reasonable hour! Not too sure that I could cope with the weather, though ;-)

yeehoo
yeehoo = english spelling of french word yihou = yahoo in english.
Live in Nice, France. Grew up in El Paso, Texas, about a 15 minute walk from the rio grande. Lived a lot of years in Austin, Texas. Spent 6-7 months in Hanover, Germany. About 5 years ago was lucky to get the opportunity to take a job here in villefranche sur mer, just next to Nice in france. Living here in fantastic cycling country, plus serious back problems which kept me from doing most any other sport, led to my giving cycling a try. So i’ve now been cycling for 2-3 years, absolutely love it, and am just now getting interested in following the pro sport – which is turning out to be a lot of fun too.

We live in Kilburn, but pretend it’s West Hampstead depending on the company.
The last 6 months have not been kind to the Kilburn High Road. I agreee about the Jubilee line though – plus it makes the best speeding up / slowing down noise of all the tubes. The overground’s now getting well handy!

Lopex
Living close to Rotterdam in The Netherlands.
Studied in Maastricht (was only vaguely interested in cycling then and never really went to see the AGR, I did wander into town once just in time to see Zabel take a win, I was in the pub 3 minutes later). Lived across the border in Belgium. Was an exchange student in Aarhus, Denmark. First job in The Hague. Second job in Willemstad, Curaçao, Netherlands Antilles. Started riding a bike seriously there, participated in a number of road races. Including two editions of the Amstel Race Curaçao and two national championships. With riding and racing slowly a serious pro-cycling fanship addiction took control of my life.

He got everyone interested in the fixie craze and he really loved those 2 centuries. I checked in with them about a year and a half ago. It seems he RODE HIS FIXIE to NC, did the B2B, then rode back to Va Beach. I guess in the century, there’s an optional ferry…he bypassed that! He ended up doing, like 216 miles that day! On his Fixed Gear! He’s one of those guys you can totally believe he would do something like that.

As an adult, have lived in Wash, DC, Ann Arbor and San Fran. worked in enviro justice, but will be going back to nursing school at Vanderbilt next fall – 41yrs old and happily going back to school. Rowed crew in college and then spent 20’s and early 30’s playing ultimate frisbee, switched to cycling when it became clear I couldn’t keep up with the whippersnappers anymore. the one that is in the photo, there are no waves, only in the winter but even then is small.
In the west coast of Portugal the waves are good. The west coast is 50km away from my hometown, gives to me to do surf in the weekends.

Just because Drew says a lot of not so nice things about norwegians , they really shouldn’t feel unwelcome here. What Drew says is really up to Drew. It was/is
a magnet school for Computers and Technology on Fresno’s infamous “West Side”.
Many of us were bused in and had 2.5 hour classes in Science and Computer Science.
Normal today but back then (1983-85) we were using Apple IIe computers.
It sounded like a great idea to me at the time, but that was about the time I was getting turned off of school, so I basically shunned computers through high school and college.

swimmers rock! er, roll?
i was a competitive swimmer and coach for many years. i was a commuter cyclist for years, too, until a bike theft left me feeling cynical about that. i got into road cycling about two years ago, after a chronic shoulder problem and burnout led to my retirement and i started spinning. then i watched Leenoos win that stage in the TdF (which i had not followed in years) and i was hooked. i’ve had the benefit of training with some elite road cyclists who turned me onto getting out there myself, got a beautiful new racing bike through one of them (a mentor half my age), and i’m loving it!

I’m Brian, a 19 year old from Reston, VA (so another DC area guy). Mostly just a pro cycling fan and a casual rider. Right now, I’m a student in Durham, NC at Duke University. I was a competitive swimmer for a while and a coxswain for my crew team in high school, but mostly, I’m a band nerd these days. I started watching cycling back around 2001 when my stepdad was watching Lance win #3. From then, I was hooked, and haven’t gone back. 2006 was when I started watching the classics and joined PdC.

No news here
If you didn’t know I live in Seattle, you haven’t been around here much. Other postal deliveries received in: Burlington, VT; Breckenridge, CO; Portland, OR; Kyoto, Japan; Washington, DC. So naturally when people ask where I’m from I say Boston.
Sadly, I did very little riding in Portland or Breckenridge. Picked up the sport in Burlington and Boston, two places with nice roads and very, very short seasons. Kyoto would probably be OK to ride, though Drew and I stuck to rollerblading in the irrigation canals.

In winter, it’s closer to twice that, which happens to be my real age. I used to live in news:rec.bicycles.racing but have now moved to Twitter/Facebook/Flickr and, recently, PdC. I like that the PdC pages do not burst with graphics and ads and that one my navigate by keyboard, somewhat (old usenet text-only addict speaking). My story
I am an Academy Award-winning actress and tap dancer, most famous for being an iconic American child actress of the 1930s, and enjoyed a notable career as a diplomat as an adult. After rising to an amazing burst of fame at the age of six with my breakthrough performance in Bright Eyes in 1934, I starred in a series of highly successful films which won me widespread public adulation and saw me become the top grossing star at the American box-office during the height of the Great Depression. In later life, I became a United States ambassador and diplomat. Now I spend my days telling some of you to shut the fuck up.

What the f—- does ANYthing have to do with tap dancing? What does that even mean?

Oh my.
I’m Megabeth (aka Megan). I live with Miss Temple-Juris here in DC and drive him to tap lessons and the hair dresser. It’s so hard maintaining those adorable blond curls!
Prior to my current life of being a stage mom to this precocious tot, I lived in Massachusetts, North Carolina (twice), Northern Virginia (twice), New Jersey, and Georgia. I got my MBA in Philadelphia but did that on a part-time basis so I can’t really count that in my “living there” list but I spent a heck of a lot of time going up there, though.

Timeout.
I must respectfully disagree that Megadeth be referred to as a “hair band”. That’s state of the art speed metal, brother. (I’d post a youtube link for you to sample, but I’m at work…and “the man” has me on lockdown).

No, it’s Megabeth because she likes to put on her Wonderwoman costume and stand on the roof, fists on hips, declaring “I am Megabeth!”. Yelling “I am Megan!” doesn’t quite carry the same impact.

Nikki, one of the founding members of Team Epic.
Grew up near Sheboygan, WI. Moved to Chicagoland for school and have been here since. Spending time now trying to get PopUp to visit the SouthWest suburbs more and helping him understand what a lawn is. :-P
Close to Elk Grove and Downers. A pretty fab cycling friend sucked me totally into cycling years ago and I can’t cheer loud enough for our boy CVV! After freezing through Cross races last Fall I became a cycling official and now get to cheer on PopUp and other friends as I official. Great stuff!

Born in Seoul, South Korea. Came to Los Angeles when I was 2. Have lived in Long Beach since I was 8. Which I’ll just say is a long long time…. ;-)
Swam, sailed, skateboarded, skied when I was a kid. Was on the tennis team in High School. But cycling has been my primary sport for most of my adult life.

I like to claim I was born and raised in the Hell of the Northern Plains, USA.
But Twin Cities (not named after the Efimkin Cycling Twins) is more Great Lakes than Midwest/Great Plains so it’s not like the “Middle of Nowhere.” And then I don’t do Fargo/Scandanavian things to my “o’s;” at least I don’t think so. At least I’m within good biking/running/walking distance of many Nature Valley stages so I can actually $ave money on cycling for once.

so I’ll keep it simple. Currently living and working on the Queen Charlotte Islands, which is an 8 hr ferry ride off of the NW coast of BC. It can be a beautiful place to cycle when it isn’t raining sideways. I’ve traveled to a couple of the big shows and am not sure where to next? I was considering TdF again this year but HWMNBN is not something I need to see in the flesh. The next week is my favorite time of the year.

all sorts of interesting things, I imagine
Just finished Raban’s Passage to Juneau. Evokes the sea part of it quite well, I think. Closest I’ve ever gotten to the area, myself, was renting a boat from Granville Island and taking it up as far as a full tank would go. A really really dumb idea, but somehow I’ve lived to tell about it.

I've always wanted to go to the Queen Charlottes
Have been to BC a few times but never up there. By the way what kind of setup do you have there…can’t be too many paved roads? Do you have a cyclocross bike?
by plinytheelder on Apr 2, 2009 10:33 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I have a few different bikes in my stable
Everyone has a full-on winter bike with full fenders for riding in the rain. No cyclocross bike for me though, actually my winter ride used to belong to Svein Tuft, it was his race bike from 2004. We have 100km of really nice new pavement that runs the length of the north island (Graham Island). Here is an article about the cycling up here.
We also have endless logging roads which are the only place you can find any climbing so we break out the ‘cough’ mountain bikes once in a while to get some hills in our legs.
And as I just glanced out the window – it’s snowing…

After the road race…Samuel Sanchez spoke to TVE on behalf of the Spanish team. I stayed behind with the reporter from Madrid….who told me he was going to interview Valverde. I speak no Spanish and could not ask any questions….darn!!….but loved watching the interview and meeting him right after. Remember…Di Luca was not able to ride and Valverde was almost denied. dheadrick
David Headrick here. I live in Knoxville, Tennessee, which has a tremendous cycling community, being fairly rural and close to the mountains. I’m 36, but only discovered cycling a few years ago because of Lance. I’ve followed the Euro peloton ever since. As usual, I’m starting off the year with a marathon in about three weeks, and then it’s all about the bike. I’m a tri guy, so I never get fast at any one discipline.
My cycling websites are velonews.com and the PdC. I haven’t been posting much lately due to time constraints, mostly work, family, and training. Whoever said “the law is a jealous mistress” pretty much got it right.
Last year, I chose a VDS team based solely on who I thought would win. This year, I chose riders that I like personally, just so I can truly celebrate their victories. So far, it’s been more fun and has worked out well with Levi and Cavendish.
Great post. It’s an honor to be amongst this quality crowd.

You can call me rawls. I live in Albuquerque, by way of Austin, New Orleans, SoCal, and the SF Bay Area (in reverse order). I’m a roadie and ABQ is great for riding, but work and family have lately kept me distracted so I’ve been riding the rollers…a lot. I figure if I pound it out enough indoors I can handle the Sandia Crest

’05 I think, it was some record year, April but there was a ton of snow up there. I had to drive up to where there were a bunch of TV towers, then had hours up there with amazing views. Absolutely loved Albuquerque, what a great place.

Very well, where do I begin?
My father was a relentlessly self-improving boulangerie owner from Belgium with low grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery. My mother was a fifteen year old French prostitute named Chloe with webbed feet. My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy; the sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. My childhood was typical: summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we’d make meat helmets. When I was insolent I was placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds; pretty standard really. At the age of twelve I received my first scribe, at the age of fourteen a Zoroastrian named Vilma ritualistically shaved my testicles. There really is nothing like a shorn scrotum… it’s breathtaking; I highly suggest you try it.
