Where are you from?
I was surprised at how many VDS teams are listed for the competition this year. Was 198 the final count?
But only about 20-30 of us regularily post on here. And out of that group, I only really know who a handful are and where they are from.
I know that Sui Juris, MegaBeth plus two more and myself are from DC.
Jens/Sweden? Lynne/Canada? Chris, Gavia/WA State? Frinking/Netherlands? Albertina/Spain, Italy? Flatbagger/OZ?
Who are all these peeps and where are you from? Pray tell!
I'll start!
DemonCats- John- Kensington, MD (inner burbs DC)

What? Can't you tell?
I got jealous of Jens’ and Bruce’s cool flags in their icons, so made mine the flag of the glorious state of Indiana (that’s tongue in cheek). Not from here, but have lived here for almost 10 years now. It’s very flat.
I’m originally an East Coaster, born in the mountains of Upstate NY, and have also lived in Vermont, Maryland, Colorado, New Mexico, Scotland, Massachusetts, and Virginia.
Speaking of the DC area: I graduated from UMCP; later lived in Reston for a couple of years when my husband got his first teaching job at George Mason.

Born in Pittsburgh, me. Father was a steelworker!!!

it’s like a terrible towel with red-splatters, for blood. Sold by the local women’s roller derby teams. (Why yes, we have 4 of those. I think several of them come from good steelworker stock, too.)
So you’re one of the lamented “lost youth of Pittsburgh.” Well, if you ever want domestic cobbles, betcha we can find some arrowheads or shell middens here to keep you professionally occupied… OK, no, it’s not the same. But I have heard occasional anecdotes about artifacts in the caves along the yough. Suspect they flood / wash out too often to be fully rewarding, but you never know.

I've already bought the shrimp and the BBQ, just waiting for the weather to improve and I'm an aussie
Oh he will be here soon
“In 2008, Heinrich announced in an interview on CyclingNews.com that he would no longer race for Germany, as he wishes to compete for Australia in the 2010 World Championships in Melbourne. When asked what he would do if chosen to race for Germany in the 2008 World Championships or at the 2008 Olympics he stated, "I wouldn’t take it. If you start for a country at the worlds there is a three year ban before you can ride for another”
I’ll be at his welcome home BBQ…
and waiting for weather?? It’s 27 Deg here, sun is out…

You're really only 19?!
I was convinced you were about 40! I always seem to assume people are older than me….I didn’t realise in the early days that Frinking was a youngster either ;-) I’m still the third youngest here though, right?
Well I write like I'm older of course
very intelligently and well thought out, such like my above comment to Frinking, were I tell him, and I quote, to “suck it”.

i am starting to think i’m the oldest on here…
You may very well think that; I couldn't possibly comment.
hmmm
to settle this, how much penny candy could you buy for a nickel when you were or kid? or, are you older or younger than Sean Kelly?
You may very well think that; I couldn't possibly comment.
umm
I wasn’t allowed candy as a child… and I’m probably younger than Kelly… There is a at least one other here older than I, and I suspect after perusing this thread a couple more… But oy, there are a lot of kids here, and I say that as a positive thing actually since I like to see them following something besides xbox and nintendo.
You have me a some margin I believe now.

well
i’m not keen to be the granddaddy here, but i have a few days on Sean so i might be. i have to remind myself what my chrono age is sometimes cuz is doesn’t seem real and it doesn’t seem to match who i am and what i do. i still play hard and train hard and try to keep up with the kids – and like you, i think it’s great that there are plenty on here. in fact, it’s one thing i really like about this place and about the younger gen of cyclists i know – the mix and the fact that the numbers don’t matter
You may very well think that; I couldn't possibly comment.
There was an announcement in Holland

About 5 years ago was lucky to get the opportunity to take a job here in villefranche sur mer, just next to Nice in france. Living here in fantastic cycling country, plus serious back problems which kept me from doing most any other sport, led to my giving cycling a try. So i’ve now been cycling for 2-3 years, absolutely love it, and am just now getting interested in following the pro sport – which is turning out to be a lot of fun too.

in spirit although we got hauled off to another country at an early age. several generations Hampstead on one side, parents both graduates of Kings…
You may very well think that; I couldn't possibly comment.
I used to live in WEST Hampstead (so much better because it has the wonderful-mostly-Jubilee Line)
but then ended up in the Docklands, Shepherd’s Bush and Upminster
West Hampstead
is where the family moved from St. John’s Wood when the family business collapsed. you know Broomsleigh Street off Mill Lane? Sandwell Crescent? in SJW they were on Boundary Road/Mews, Loudoun Road, and Belgrave Gardens, among others. do you know St. Augustine’s on Kilburn Park Road?
have Docklands connections too!
You may very well think that; I couldn't possibly comment.
West Hampstead's lovely
We live in Kilburn, but pretend it’s West Hampstead depending on the company.
The last 6 months have not been kind to the Kilburn High Road. I agreee about the Jubilee line though – plus it makes the best speeding up / slowing down noise of all the tubes. The overground’s now getting well handy!
Well, actually, where I lived was kind on between West Hampstead and Kilburn...
a mixture of the the two, up towards the WH end of Fordwych Road. I really liked it there but had a totally mad Swedish flatmate and eventually reached the end of my tether, and moved in with a friend in East India Dock!
Kilburn
my dad was born in Kilburn on Rudolph Road, just up from St. Augustine’s
You may very well think that; I couldn't possibly comment.
didn't know that - cool :)
knew about London but not where
You may very well think that; I couldn't possibly comment.
Doesn't live there anymore
But you can always tell during interviews. It’s something about his eyes – they look like they’re permanently longing for Kilburn.

Born in OH; Raised in TX; 20 year Navy submarine career here in Norfolk (now retired). The Navy took me to the North Pole, HI, Panama, France, Sardinia, Peru, Chile, Uruguay and Scotland. If, for some reason I get kicked out of here, I’m moving to Scotland.
I can tell you without much argument, Hampton Roads is one of the most non-conducive cycling environments on the planet.

The only thing I know about subs is what I read in Hunt for Red October.
Though, actually, I seem to recall touring one growing up. Friend of the family was a sub capt. stationed at Coronado.
the sub tour by the PGH science museum is free a couple of hours a week
if you hit it right. USS Requin. The russian sub in Amsterdam, unfortunately, is now a party rental, with the insides gutted. And if you’re a diver, this is a very cool dive.

He got everyone interested in the fixie craze and he really loved those 2 centuries. I checked in with them about a year and a half ago. It seems he RODE HIS FIXIE to NC, did the B2B, then rode back to Va Beach. I guess in the century, there’s an optional ferry…he bypassed that! He ended up doing, like 216 miles that day! On his Fixed Gear! He’s one of those guys you can totally believe he would do something like that.

swimmers rock! er, roll?
i was a competitive swimmer and coach for many years. i was a commuter cyclist for years, too, until a bike theft left me feeling cynical about that. i got into road cycling about two years ago, after a chronic shoulder problem and burnout led to my retirement and i started spinning. then i watched Leenoos win that stage in the TdF (which i had not followed in years) and i was hooked. i’ve had the benefit of training with some elite road cyclists who turned me onto getting out there myself, got a beautiful new racing bike through one of them (a mentor half my age), and i’m loving it!

I have lived in Phoenix for 8 years after a 2 year stint as a ski bum living in Dillon, Colorado. I grew up, and started racing, in Louisiana which will rival anywhere else as the least conducive place to ride a bike.

Breck, Winter Park, even Vail are much more comfy places to ski.

Vail...the new bowls behind what used to be the back bowls...
it goes on forever and ever. Get in shape for the season someplace cheap, then go to Vail when you can ski fast and hard all day, or you’re wasting the ticket.
Huge, very huge
almost got lost back there the first time I went. I don’t go to Vail often because it’s expensive but the times I do go I must say I get my money’s worth.

The good life
was living there and being a dirt. My wife I and I lived a simple life without worry and skied all we could.
I thoroughly enjoyed riding up and down Loveland pass when it was closed! When were you in Breck? They had a great mid week mountain bike series in 99, 00.

Well then guess I will follow the trend
Im Chris, 18 years old from Cincinnati, Ohio. Currently at Kent State University but not for too much longer. Started biking for weight loss when I was 15 and just took off from their. Started racing last year and am almost to Cat 3. Went to De Ronde last year for my birthday and seeing Cancellara fly into a field of cow shit coming of the Koppenberg made the whole trip. Oh and actually riding the course was mildly exciting.
Mildly exciting?!

It really annoys me when people say Belgium is the most boring country in the world. If I could live anywhere, Oudenaarde would surely be near the top of the list. Or Brakel, or Geraardsbergen, or maybe Ghent at a push.

I have a friend in Belgium, I have made through cycling. I think I could swing living there.
But, I always think of the movie ‘In Bruges’, with Colin Farrell and how they are always ripping on Belgium. How cool is it that you can basically be at either side of the country in a couple of hours? And all the cycling!
yeah what other country could inspire this? Or this (as you can see even the Dutch prefer it to their own country ;)

This is a nice diversion. My knee jerk reaction is to say I should live in Abruzzi, close the loop and all. But I would be fine with Brakel. I’m old, and would be very happy with a quiet existence, doing reps on the Muur three mornings a week.

Racing for Victory and Free Beer!
My story
I am an Academy Award-winning actress and tap dancer, most famous for being an iconic American child actress of the 1930s, and enjoyed a notable career as a diplomat as an adult. After rising to an amazing burst of fame at the age of six with my breakthrough performance in Bright Eyes in 1934, I starred in a series of highly successful films which won me widespread public adulation and saw me become the top grossing star at the American box-office during the height of the Great Depression. In later life, I became a United States ambassador and diplomat. Now I spend my days telling some of you to shut the fuck up.
Tap dancing?
What the f—- does ANYthing have to do with tap dancing? What does that even mean?

Oh my.
I’m Megabeth (aka Megan). I live with Miss Temple-Juris here in DC and drive him to tap lessons and the hair dresser. It’s so hard maintaining those adorable blond curls!
Prior to my current life of being a stage mom to this precocious tot, I lived in Massachusetts, North Carolina (twice), Northern Virginia (twice), New Jersey, and Georgia. I got my MBA in Philadelphia but did that on a part-time basis so I can’t really count that in my “living there” list but I spent a heck of a lot of time going up there, though.
Timeout.
I must respectfully disagree that Megadeth be referred to as a “hair band”. That’s state of the art speed metal, brother. (I’d post a youtube link for you to sample, but I’m at work…and “the man” has me on lockdown).

So Cal gal through and through
Born in Seoul, South Korea. Came to Los Angeles when I was 2. Have lived in Long Beach since I was 8. Which I’ll just say is a long long time…. ;-)
Swam, sailed, skateboarded, skied when I was a kid. Was on the tennis team in High School. But cycling has been my primary sport for most of my adult life.
I like to claim I was born and raised in the Hell of the Northern Plains, USA.
But Twin Cities (not named after the Efimkin Cycling Twins) is more Great Lakes than Midwest/Great Plains so it’s not like the “Middle of Nowhere.” And then I don’t do Fargo/Scandanavian things to my “o’s;” at least I don’t think so. At least I’m within good biking/running/walking distance of many Nature Valley stages so I can actually $ave money on cycling for once.
Mon coeur appartient à les forçats de la route.
I'm not even going to try to keep up
so I’ll keep it simple. Currently living and working on the Queen Charlotte Islands, which is an 8 hr ferry ride off of the NW coast of BC. It can be a beautiful place to cycle when it isn’t raining sideways. I’ve traveled to a couple of the big shows and am not sure where to next? I was considering TdF again this year but HWMNBN is not something I need to see in the flesh. The next week is my favorite time of the year.
Just big fish and big trees here...
and great beachcombing – you won’t believe some of the stuff I’ve found
all sorts of interesting things, I imagine
Just finished Raban’s Passage to Juneau. Evokes the sea part of it quite well, I think. Closest I’ve ever gotten to the area, myself, was renting a boat from Granville Island and taking it up as far as a full tank would go. A really really dumb idea, but somehow I’ve lived to tell about it.
I've always wanted to go to the Queen Charlottes
Have been to BC a few times but never up there. By the way what kind of setup do you have there…can’t be too many paved roads? Do you have a cyclocross bike?

I have a few different bikes in my stable
Everyone has a full-on winter bike with full fenders for riding in the rain. No cyclocross bike for me though, actually my winter ride used to belong to Svein Tuft, it was his race bike from 2004. We have 100km of really nice new pavement that runs the length of the north island (Graham Island). Here is an article about the cycling up here.
We also have endless logging roads which are the only place you can find any climbing so we break out the ‘cough’ mountain bikes once in a while to get some hills in our legs.
And as I just glanced out the window – it’s snowing…
keeping local bikes local

dheadrick
David Headrick here. I live in Knoxville, Tennessee, which has a tremendous cycling community, being fairly rural and close to the mountains. I’m 36, but only discovered cycling a few years ago because of Lance. I’ve followed the Euro peloton ever since. As usual, I’m starting off the year with a marathon in about three weeks, and then it’s all about the bike. I’m a tri guy, so I never get fast at any one discipline.
My cycling websites are velonews.com and the PdC. I haven’t been posting much lately due to time constraints, mostly work, family, and training. Whoever said “the law is a jealous mistress” pretty much got it right.
Last year, I chose a VDS team based solely on who I thought would win. This year, I chose riders that I like personally, just so I can truly celebrate their victories. So far, it’s been more fun and has worked out well with Levi and Cavendish.
Great post. It’s an honor to be amongst this quality crowd.
rawls
You can call me rawls. I live in Albuquerque, by way of Austin, New Orleans, SoCal, and the SF Bay Area (in reverse order). I’m a roadie and ABQ is great for riding, but work and family have lately kept me distracted so I’ve been riding the rollers…a lot. I figure if I pound it out enough indoors I can handle the Sandia Crest
I snowshoed in the Sandias a few years ago!
’05 I think, it was some record year, April but there was a ton of snow up there. I had to drive up to where there were a bunch of TV towers, then had hours up there with amazing views. Absolutely loved Albuquerque, what a great place.

Very well, where do I begin?
My father was a relentlessly self-improving boulangerie owner from Belgium with low grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery. My mother was a fifteen year old French prostitute named Chloe with webbed feet. My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy; the sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. My childhood was typical: summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we’d make meat helmets. When I was insolent I was placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds; pretty standard really. At the age of twelve I received my first scribe, at the age of fourteen a Zoroastrian named Vilma ritualistically shaved my testicles. There really is nothing like a shorn scrotum… it’s breathtaking; I highly suggest you try it.
Dude... why WOULDN'T Thor ride the chicken?
That's me... No... yes... I can't be sure anymore... I think so.
Dude... why WOULDN'T Thor ride the chicken?
I have eight words for you Jimbo...

Dude... why WOULDN'T Thor ride the chicken?
I'd post pictures...
… but this thread is about to collapse under it’s own mass and create a black hole at the center of SBN.
Dude... why WOULDN'T Thor ride the chicken?
You should hear my lungs...
… it’s like I have a drunken concertina ensemble living inside my bronchial passages.
Dude... why WOULDN'T Thor ride the chicken?
"drunken" concertina ensemble...
… and I’m sure I have no idea what your problem with balalaikas is.
Dude... why WOULDN'T Thor ride the chicken?
Oh spare me that again!
This is the sort of thing which is really objectionable. Fine for 30 seconds, then…..aaaaargh make it stop!
I would normally counteract that with a youtube of Reinhold Glière's "Sailor's Dance"
… but since all the videos are of high school and middle school orchestras and bands playing it badly, I’ll just have to play the People’s Mario card.

I’m a world champion lurker. I mean, I lurk the shit out of this site. I think my other two posts on PdC have been about surfing.
I grew up in Houston, Texas but since that time have lived in San Antonio, done stints in Santa Fe NM and Crested Butte CO as a ski bum and a stint living out of my car as a climbing dirtbag. I decided to get a real job and ended up living in Barbados, where I finally realized my unfulfilled passion for surfing, and then Athens, Greece. Now I live in Falls Church, VA and work in Washington, DC.
I don’t know shit about bikes but I commute to the metro (Dunn Loring, for those of you who know the area) almost every day on my cheap Schwinn. I dig bike racing because a) I am probably addicted to sports fandom; and b) it’s one cool mofo. Plus, growing up in Texas in the 80s and 90s, you knew about Lance (and one of my best friends went to school with him). So that’s nice.
I think I’ve played almost every sport out there. Used to swim and play soccer competitively before I got into lacrosse. Now I run around after my toddlers and get out the crags when I can. I haven’t surfed since last summer. This makes me very sad.
When I'm on the mic, I'm like global warming, you can't ignore me.
San Antonio
So close to New Braunfels… nice riding up thattaway!

(where we’re not entirely sure if spring is ever coming, it snowed a bit again today) … not posting as much (or monitoring cycling as closely) as I did previously, as I’m now 8 weeks from my due date in a pregnancy that’s becoming a bit more complicated (had to cut down my work hours this week, don’t seem to do a lot lately other than sleep, eat, work and maybe read a bit of news about cycling). Really hoping I can manage to get up on time to watch RVV on Sunday and PR next week…
Yep
And I fucking rode in that slop in Seattle. Twice.
But I no longer mind, thanks to my Bar Mitts.

from Denver
Another guy from suburbs of Denver. Cycling fan for twenty years. Been to three TDF’s: 2004, 2005 and 2007. Greatest experiences of my life. Ended up in Denver after life as an Air Force Brat. I miss the time when Colorado was the unofficial home of American Cycling back in the 1980’s. Went to 1986 Worlds in Colo Springs. It was great because I just bought my first road bike which was a bianchi. Moreno Argentin won on something that looked like my bike. Since I can remember I take pictures of this wonderful sport. Enjoy this site very much.
Air Force Brat
Born at Fitzsimmons Army Medical in 65. Mom and Dad met at Barksdale AFB. Oh the life of an Air Force Brat.
Just
Awesome. 80s in Colorado. I dreamt of being there.

Cycling in Colorado in 1980s
Awesome: Red Zinger and Coors Classic. Davis Phinney, Alexi Grewal, Raul Alcala, Steve Bauer. I got to see the 7 eleven team all the time. Coors Classic Criteriums in Washington Park in Denver and North Boulder. The best for last right before 86 Worlds: I saw the La Vie Claire Team training outside of Longmont, Colorado. With the Badger himself: Bernard Hinualt. A few days later, I was riding near Longmont and two members of the that awesome team asked me for directions and took off like rockets before I finished saying anything. In my opinion, that was the best time for cycling in Colorado.
Hey, Nikki
could you make sure that the biggest bitch ass in the world, aka. Jay Cutler, is as miserable as he deserves to be in Chicago? Being a Packers fan I’m sure you could assist.

Another Utard
Greetings all,
Fausto here, residing in the “hot” bed of cycling, the desert of southern Utah. My real name is Brian, 49 yrs. old. I raced from age 8-25, but now I’m just an avid rider and huge pro cycling fan. Actually I am a pro, I lead cycling trips for a company called “Backroads.” I also guide hiking trips in Utah and Arizona. Spent February in California and had a blast at the TOC. Had too much fun to make the Solvang get together, but I did chalk the roads with PdC.com on all the big climbs!
+ several

that's the big growly cats you drive on the mountain, right?
Not the little mewly ones that barf in your shoes and then do the “pet me” thing?
Montana,
but grew up, spent most of my life, and and now seasonally working in the Bay Area. Swim coach, but cycling is more fun.
hey coach
after years of doing the same, i tend to think cycling is more fun, too!
You may very well think that; I couldn't possibly comment.
lol
What, you got tired of staring at the black line? I still hit the pool some, but I love how you get to go places on the bike.
Gav <—- ex-swimmer
Ditto
I can barely swim in a pool anymore without cringing. I have to keep telling myself that it makes for better paddling on my log.

The Black Line
It’s great for technique and I’m lost with out it when I (rarely) open water swim, but, yeah, the scenery is a little more varied on the bike.
Yeah,
I’m not swimming much myself as I’d much rather ride (or XC ski in winter) than swim. But the kids that I coach keep me inspired.
Montana...must be some beautiful rides there no?

Will one more post collapse thsi thread and suck PdC down with it? EEK!
Hello to all the newly unlurked. Welcome.
Nee Howdy . . .
I’m Ryan and like wanted to say again that I think it is so great to see that most of you all are actually mostly normal, well adjusted people that cycling is only one small part of your lives.
Things are a bit different for me on the other hand.
Much to my mothers dismay, I picked up racing in the 90’s which eventually led to me becoming a mechanic for some Pro teams in the US and for a while, and then dumped me in Santa Cruz, Ca for about 5 years working for a few bike companies in that area and riding some of the most amazingly beautiful roads I have ever seen.
Finally, in 2005 I packed up everything and moved to Taichung, Taiwan so I can work more closely with the manufacturing side of bicycle industry and basically help develop some of that cool stuff you all drool over.
I hope I'm not the one to drag this baby down....
Flatbagger=Johnny. Born in deepest darkest Yorkshire (Leeds) migrated to Australia in 1974, so consider myself an Aussie. Been riding since I sprouted legs, rode half way round the world in 1985 (couldn’t make the whole way so turned around and rode back!!!). Footballer turned triathlete, travelled the world as a Ski Patroller so focussed on running as shorts were easier to carry in a backpack. Ran 2:36 in Berlin Marathon in 1989. Twice qualified for an Ironman, twice interrupted by Testicular Cancer. Fell in love with cycling in late 90’s when someone made having one testicle fashionable…decided to go one better than Lance in 2001. Took up amateur road racing this year seven wins in my first year and now in B grade.
Currently living in a dark hole in Adelaide (home of the Tour DownUnder) while i get used to this Cochlear Implant thingy….I didn’t know that Microwave ovens speak to you!!
errrr....am i supposed to sign this??
Adelaide is beautiful
hopefully I can make it to the TDU some time.
bad timing though, most likely clash with tennis…..
Maybe this is one comment too many,
but I want to paticipate in this thread too.
I’m from Helsinki, Finland. I found cycling pretty late (my true passion is tennis), but this place is now probably my favorite site in the internet. The friendly and funny atmosphere is quite unique.
I’m mostly a lurker here, don’t know enough about cycling to post much, but I love reading almost all the stuff here. Great information and even better gossip and hottitude!
And I can always count on this place (and certain posters) to provide me with some good laughs when I need them.
Did anyone NOT have CrashDan instantly pop into their head with that last line?
"The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed."
I think the Frank Schleck thread may have been one of the best for laughing out loud for me!
I agree they do have the best gossip and hottitude threads too! But, they also know which live streams are working.
Closing comments now
Welcome to you all. This site has long since exceeded my highest hopes for a great online community of cycling fans. Move to Part II to keep chatting. Feel free to pick up any ongoing threads from here and start over there. 650 comments… I think this post is taking on water…
