awesome

I’m the only one with Kolobnev. Go me!

Contador 98? really?

by jsallee00 on Mar 7, 2009 2:33 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

well

I’m one of the 98
guilty as charged…

by rbjhan on Mar 7, 2009 4:44 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

That's the beauty of Contador

He’s never been charged with anything, and neither will you.

by Jens on Mar 7, 2009 5:29 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Possibly

I don’t know what date the Tour starts but it will be within 120 hours of that date, if it happens.

by Jens on Mar 7, 2009 7:23 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Me three but...

I am also surprised that The Acountent has so many teams on his ledger. It see ms like folks were seeing his potential and minimizing his weak points: that he might not do the Vuelta; that he isn’t an automatic win wherever he races. Surely he benefited from Valverde’s looming OP problems and from Basso’s just coming back from suspension and from Tin Tin’s age. But Cancellara and Evans were IMO safer picks, more likely to meet a benchmark.

by ursula on Mar 7, 2009 5:33 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Injury (including knifewounds to the back)

is really the only thing that I can see as an obstacle to him scoring massively.

by Jens on Mar 7, 2009 5:36 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

If you picked him

you may not win, but if you did not pick him, you most certainly will not win…

my original 25 pick was Valverde

after his problem, thought about Tony long and hard. He’s the safer bet, but went for Bert.

never going to pick Evans.

by rbjhan on Mar 7, 2009 5:57 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

i was in the same situation

which is why i now have the accountant

by brandon... on Mar 7, 2009 6:40 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

it would be interesting

to see how many teams out of the 98 did this.

by rbjhan on Mar 7, 2009 6:56 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Cance and Evans safer???

You’ll have to explain that.

If you take last year’s score and this year;s rider costs one can expect Contador to produce 111 points for every point invested. Evans and Cance do way worse with 68 and 65 resp. Including the points for the new VDS races Contador gains another 9 points on his RoI while this does not benefit Evans and Cance much. Sure, chances are Contador will not score 3000 points again this year but 2000 seems a pretty safe bet. Then he is still ahead of Evans (where is he going to improve?) and Cance (doing new things this year).

Valverde and Contador where bargains among the high-pointers and could have been priced higher I guess. This made them natural counterweights against the potentially high-scoring riders in the 1-6 points range.

by Lopex on Mar 7, 2009 7:54 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Evans and cance

Evans is like a better Leipheimer: he doesn’t need to win to score (like Levi) plus he can do well in hilly classics (unlike Levi). With no injuries you can expect Cattle to place well at Worlds and Lombardia, besides La Fleche. Also he normally does two Grand Tours- last year was an exception, again due to his knee. So in sum he’s a fairly solid 1500 points with an upside of 2000- and that’s without winning a Grand Tour.

Cancellara should be expected to do the same as last year, although his injury messed him up now. But he
s also branching out to the hilly classics so he still might get last year’s totals.

Contador’s points are dependent on winning Grand Tours. If he doesn’t race the Vuelta, he immediately lowers his points to Evans territory, if not a little lower.

Valverde, before CONI, was IMO the safest bet as he gets points from anywhere, like Rebellin on steroids. Oops! Bad choice of words there….

by ursula on Mar 7, 2009 11:35 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree about Valverde

Much criticized about his grand tour performance yet…wins many races…and is quite consistent. It was only because of CONI that I left him off my team…..and I love me some Valverde…..ouch!

Intertested in Benna's and Boonen's and Hushovd's stats.

Did folks who went for an expensive sprinter all go to Cavendish?

by ursula on Mar 7, 2009 5:34 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Probably

Me, I cling to the theory that the only way to get value for money from a sprinter is to pick one who will do well in classics too, i.e. Boonen (maybe Thor too nowadays ?)

by Jens on Mar 7, 2009 5:38 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Agree

I didn’t pick any of the expensive sprinters but I almost picked Thor for the exact reason you state.

Of course some riders like Cavendish or Andy Schleck are just popular: all else being equal, people pick them.

Haussler I’ll bet benefited hugely by his top early season form. Colom too.

by ursula on Mar 7, 2009 5:44 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I've had Haussler for two years waiting in vain for a breakthrough

This year I wanted to dump him but was afraid that he would finally pay off if the teamchange gave him a boost. Now I almost wish I had dumped him in favour of a less picked rider.

by Jens on Mar 7, 2009 5:56 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I think people (like me) pick Cavendish

..because he is so darn good….and not just because he is popular. He is aiming for green in the Tour and is a solid sprinter. His selection is actually a no-brainer…..nothing to do with popularity. I love his winning mentality.

by steph- on Mar 7, 2009 12:27 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I’ve only got Pozzato.

by rbjhan on Mar 7, 2009 6:01 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I went for Cavendish AND Boonen

and Ciolek and Pettachi and Brown and… not knowing a lot about VDS strategy

Is going sprinter heavy a recipe for disaster? I’ll be absolutely spitting if I don’t score big at MSR and P-T.

by milram- on Mar 7, 2009 7:18 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Sprinters

The only one I had last year was Boonen and felt that lacking a couple cost me a higher placing so I went with Boonen, Hushovd, Davis, Haussler, Graeme Brown, and Ginnani.

by Crazy D on Mar 7, 2009 7:42 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

VDS strategy

Is going for riders who will bring in lots of points relative to their costs. Be it sprinters, climbers, classic studs or GC-hunters.

The five sprinters you name could all fit this description well. So no worries. Yet…

by Lopex on Mar 7, 2009 7:57 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

i didn't go for an expensive sprinter

i spent the big bucks on GC and Classics riders and otherwise tried to pick up some stage hunters. i was that close to Thor and Ciolek but decided to give some other favourites a crack at it this year…

You may very well think that; I couldn't possibly comment.

As opposed to Contador. I don’t know why we didn’t think of making him 30 points.

Is there any sort of secondary pattern that emerges from the teams that don’t have Contador?

by JFS_PGH on Mar 7, 2009 9:41 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

my strategy

in part is not to go for the obvious – i find it more satisfying to win on a dark horse, or a least a horse in the running on more of an outside chance…

I even find it more satisfying losing on a dark horse.

BTW , I think nickel17 is trying to plant subliminal drug messages here. Last post mentioned crack, this one horse. Is skunk, pot or opium next?

That was how I figured it too

“I really should, but..” So I took Basso instead. Mind you, Oscar was my twenty-five pointer last year and he didn’t really perform at that level.

by Monty. on Mar 7, 2009 11:40 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Funny

I’d have thought the teams skipping Bert would be going for Basso, the other heavy favorite in a grand tour. Apparently not.

Basso

I think Basso’s unpopularity comes from the AToC coming right before the VDS deadline. He was my main stud, but I dropped him like a rock after his performance there.

by Softie on Mar 7, 2009 11:04 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

but the ToC

is used as a training vehicle for many…and therefore should never be used as a barometer of the coming season. Many riders are open about using this race for training.

Di Luca

It now looks like Di Luca probably will be at Fleche Wallone and Liege. I dropped him this year after having him on my team for the past two years, because I thought LPR wouldn’t get race invites outside of Italy, but I wish now that I had kept him.

I’m surprised so many people picked Cavendish at 20 points. It will be interesting to see how that plays out.

by Tifosa on Mar 7, 2009 11:27 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I don't have him.

I’m hoping Benna-lanche has a stellar year against him!

But Cav is pretty fricking fast! I can’t help but like him. His after race comments are always made funnier by that Manx accent.

I love Cavendish...

something he said right before the ToC – "Some people think I have a reputation for being cocky or arrogant, but I think I’m just a realist. I’m the first to say when I’m bad at something, but I’m also the first to say when I think I’m good at something. My goals are my goals, not dreams; they are targets and I’ll do whatever necessary to make those targets. So when somebody asks me if I’m the fastest, I think I am. But I need to be put in a position where I can finish it. I think I’m unrivaled."

How can you not love this love to win!

by steph- on Mar 7, 2009 12:36 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

He's got an invite?

Damn, I had him right up until that hassle with the biological passports, but then it looked like he would spend the season racing with the U23s in Italy, or anywhere else that they would let him start. Even worse, I ended up with Levi on my rejigged team. OK he may score higher but I’d rather not snooze my way there.

by Monty. on Mar 7, 2009 11:43 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

No invite yet, but

this bit from cyclingnews yesterday sounds promising:

“Bordonali received a letter from the Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO) asking if the team would like to participate in its upcoming April classics: Paris-Roubaix, Flèche Wallonne and Liège-Bastogne-Liège (Di Luca is a past winner of the latter two). He affirmed the team’s desire to race and the organiser will reveal the teams for its race by March 22.”

I really hope The Killer is there. I love watching him race.

by Tifosa on Mar 7, 2009 12:08 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Damn!

I didn’t pivck him cause I thought he’d miss the Ardennes this year again. Oh well.

I’m sorry.

don't worry

He might bag a classic, which would make him arguably worth… what? 14? But it’s not a good Giro for him. So you’re left hoping nothing goes wrong in the Ardennes.

AC 98 vs Valverde 6!?!?!

That is amazing!

Imagine AC gets suspended for some OP infraction. Half the VDS teams lose a good chance at winning.

Imagine Valverde doesn’t get suspended after all. Ka-Ching!!!

I wouldn’t hav ethem on my team ever simply because I personally think they are both dirty, but that’s just me!

As you have mentioned confusion (and not just keyboard confusion?)

The word “who” sounds like an owl hooting—hoooo? hooooooo? As you know, the first letter in some english words is effectively or entirely silent. The W in “who” (as most people say it) is silent. It means “which person?”

The word “how” rhymes with cow, as in “how now, brown cow?”
It means “in what way?”

Maybe it will help to think that owl is confused about people, and the cow is just…confused.
