3rd and 4th!
Will I get a win this season?
Where the hell is Basso?
Racing for Victory and Free Beer!
Well....
according to his tweets, he had a ‘small lunch’ and a ‘fantastic day at home’ with his family….
He's going from there to L-B-L
now that’s a hell of a quick trip, but he has his own charter flight.
Ivanov
saying this is his favorite race. Very diplomatic.

He's giving the whole history of being close over the years
And sacrificing for his team leader. I think he’s being honest, as well as diplomatic.

Not a huge favorite,
but usually in contention. He finished 2nd 7 or 8 years ago. He’s had a strong spring ridding for Pozzato.
Brooklyn Chewing Gum: Vlaanderens Mooiste
Not really
He is not kidding when he says this is his favorite. He’s has always done good here. Finished second to his teammate in 2002 here.
Can't believe I got home in time to see the last 8k--thought it was supposed to be over hours ago.
But Gilbert obviously missed the message that he was supposed to win, dammit.
"Sean Kelly? Sorry, I am not so good with cycling history. I just want to race." --Edvald Boasson Hagen
For some odd reason
Silence gave up the chase just as they were about to catch the three leaders.
true
Van Summeren really gave it in that last chase
You may very well think that; I couldn't possibly comment.
Actually they did as good as they could
Where were Lampre and Caisse? They didn’t do anything I could see toward the end.
Looking at each other?
Not wanting to tow the other to the win? Didn’t see how they were represented. Stupid work!
Moreover, it is my opinion that Alejandro Valverde is an asshole who should not be allowed to compete in bikeraces right now.
that's how it sounded to me
some collective weirdness at the finish
You may very well think that; I couldn't possibly comment.
A lot of spent riders too
wanting to chase and actually having the juice left are different things. We have to remember this
Moreover, it is my opinion that Alejandro Valverde is an asshole who should not be allowed to compete in bikeraces right now.
Okay that explains Cunego and Valverde somewhat
But none of the other riders had a kick? Hard to imagine that everyone was spent.
List is way off of top ten.
Kolobnev and Gerrans were in top ten.
based on your eyes, or a report?
This is the list flashed on screen from the feed… and the dutch announcers said same…
Based on my and CTV eyes.
Watching the finish replayed.
you (and B and A) have higher resolution feed
and I have to admit there are some relative unknowns in the top 10 as listed. Guess we’ll wait and see.
first time
i have followed a race on twitter – was actually very helpful, especially Cosmo’s tweets

A&B pointed out they're sure they saw a Cervelo jersey
and that Roche is #182 and Gerrans #18 (or vice versa) so the numbers might have got mixed up
yes, i saw this on other posts
seems Gerrans would be the more likely suspect

How to block.
Was Saxo Bank really that effective at blocking in the last km? They seemed to have a presence on the front, and this seemed to combine with the lack of an explosive burst from the bunch that we, well I, was waiting for with baited breath.
Were they that good at blocking (was there some linking of arms across the front of the group) or were the “contenders” really that spent and unable to launch?
OT ... but you need to see this

Free web tv feed from France 3
they may have some highlights on the site too
French Eurosport update on Schleck
here … according to DS Andersen not as serious as first thought, no fractures, but concussion … nothing in that report about Lloyd’s condition (I’m still looking).
this says about the same
another report in French .
Did you guys see the bit at CN in their live report where Frank apparently wanted to continue in the race by running since his bike was broken (according to a Luxembourg radio announcer apparently)? certainly a sign of significant disorientation so no way he didn’t have a concussion if that story is true… :-(
yep, me too
but still looking. all the tweets seem to be similar stuff about Frank with a “no news on Matt Lloyd” yet …
Fun race day
after having a 36 hour power outage and 4 feet of snow here, it was great to watch the Tour of Turkey for a bit, then AG, and then the final 15km of Tro Bro(was on France3 live streaming).
First place in monuments so soooooo overrated, 2nd is were it's at.
Beerdrinking in the secretariat comes to mind
Moreover, it is my opinion that Alejandro Valverde is an asshole who should not be allowed to compete in bikeraces right now.
Let's hope it's no worse than that
seems strange to say but I feared it might be even more serious.
Moreover, it is my opinion that Alejandro Valverde is an asshole who should not be allowed to compete in bikeraces right now.
Sargeant comments on Lloyd
from sporza, broken pelvis and out for months.
Nobody knows how the fall happened. The team buddies saw Lloyd suddenly fly from left to right, like something exploded. It may be a blown tube, or maybe hit the curb.
(interesting that google translates “doodjammer” as “horrible death” … )
Gesink
Good ride by him and the rest of the Rabo team. Too bad he cramped when they entered Valkenburg but he did manage to stay close to the first two and in front of the chase group. The guy is only 22 so the Ardennes might be a lot of fun for Dutch fans the next decade or so.
Yes Rabo was ok today
I agree. Actually I thought they did a nice race today. They got their contender to a place where he could win. He couldn’t finish it off, but that happens. Do it often enough and you will get victories.
They sent Freire up the road to play. I am sure he likes getting some race miles in his legs. Then Gesink really helped create the winning break by pushing, although Ivanov certainly did his part.
Lets see what Gesink gets up to next. With him and Andy in the top 10, the youngsters are here.
By the way, nice ride by Albasini today. He was up there all along.
agreed
They didn’t miss any moves, and their guy was in place to win. What more can you ask for?

If Amstel were a cross country race, Saxo Bank would have won in a landslide
If you scored this race like a (running) cross country race where the first place finisher gets 1 point, the second placed finisher 2, etc., and teams scored their top five with seven total on a team, here are the standings:
1. Saxo Bank- 54 points: 2, 6, 10, 16, 20 (30, 34)(Kroon, Kolobnev, A Schleck, N Sorensen, Larsson, Fuglsang, C A Sorensen)
2. Lotto- 130: 4, 27, 28, 30, 41 (67, 74) (Gilbert, Van Summeren, Vanendert, Dekker, Vandenbroeck, Evans, S Scheirlinckx)
3. Rabobank- 170: 3, 8, 31, 63, 65 (105, (Gesink, Nuyens, Martens, Tankink, Freire, Weening)
4. Katusha- 179: 1, 9, 36, 56, 77, (91,100) (Ivanov, Pfannberger, Mazzanti, Swift, Horrach, Klimov, Botcharov)
5. Quickstep- 190: 13, 24, 29, 55, 69 (72,73) (Pineau, Chavanel, Baredo, Cataldo, Reda, Deveyens, Davis)
6. Vacansoleil-232: 22, 33, 47, 64, 66 (90, 110) (Carrara, Leukmans, Lowik, Hoogerland, Marcato, Lagutin, Honig)
7. Columbia-248: 15, 25, 62, 71, 75 (78, 99) (Albasini, Monfort, Lewis, Rogers, Burghardt, Pinotti, Martin)
8. Lampre-253: 5, 39, 40, 52, 117 (118) (Cunego, Gavazzi, Gasparotto, Mori, Santambrogio, Righi)
9. Milram- 254: 11, 26, 53, 68, 96 (Knees, P Velits, Gerdemann, Wegmann, Frolinger)
10. Liquigas-277: 18, 19, 48, 94, 98 (108, 115) ( Kreuziger, Nibali, Stangelj, Willems, Santaromita, Vanborg, Agnoli)
11. Cervelo-285: 7, 38, 61, 82, 97 (116) (Gerrans, Sastre, King, Deignan, Pauwels, Rollin
12. F des Jeux-365: 12, 60, 83, 101, 109 (121) (Vaungrenard, Casar, Sulsberger, Cherel, Mourey, Roux
13. Caisse d’Epargne- 399: 21, 43, 104, 112, 119 (Valverde, Rodriguez, Losada, Passamontes, Costa)
The rest of the teams did not have 5 riders finish so they get no score:
Euskaltel- 14, 59, 79, 83, (Sanchez, Landaluze, Perez, Isasi,
Diqui- 17, 42, 54, 107, (Scarponi, Rebellin, Ginanni, Solari,

Skil-Shimano- 80, 86, 103, (Hupond, de Kort, Goesinnen,
Note: Only two teams (Quickstep and Vacasoleil) had all 8 riders finish.
Christian Meier tweets:
And so after all that they bung up the results and give my placing to Ricardo, haha, the dutch, always looking out for each other..
You may very well think that; I couldn't possibly comment.
Today is not the best day to be a Dutch cyclist
Consider:
- The high point is just missing winning Amstel with a 2nd and 3rd. Still they had a great chance to win their home race and lost.
- Bos in Turkey does a horse collar tackle. Roy Williams would be proud.
- Rumors of doping by Boogard and Dekker.
- Did a bad job reporting the results of Amstel with Meier here making me wonder about some of the results further down the list.
NOS
This Dutch public broadcasting agency should not be taken serious when cycling is involved. We have an immensely popular anchor man (Mart Smeets) who has been involved with cycling for 30 years and still makes hundreds of stupid mistakes. As soon as he names a rider you can be sure it is someone else. Last night I watched the race summary on tv and within only those 4 minutes he got about 3 names wrong. His co-commentator had to correct him every time.
It really is a shame that a country which has been active in cycling for decades can’t manage to get it’s reporting up to the standard like the Belgians.
But... He's thousand times better than Dijkstra..
“Ze zijn aan het pokeren hoor” and “Zonder het nieuwe wielrennen hadden we dit niet gezien” are sentences that make mog going crazy
Crashdan: "Veni Vidi Vici beats Wing Kong Exchange... … and I’ll change my signature to a backwards smile for a month."
Franzoi wins Parijs-Roubaix and I win a date with the VDS of Team Txirrindulariak..
I don't care if extremely bad is slightly better than rock bottom
I want professional cycling commentators that know what they are talking about.
Yeah I speak no Dutch
and can’t understand the Belgian guys…but I don’t know what it is about them, they just sound incredibly astute and knowledgeable even though I can’t understand a word!

more on Lloyd
(not sure why a Peruvian media source has the most recent update I could find, but anyway)… it says he has fractured 3 vertebrae and has severe bruising in the sacral area, in hospital until tomorrow and a month before he can train.
seeing that the sacrum is technically made up of 3 vertebrae, it’s not necessarily contradicting prior reports of a sacral fracture, hopefully it’s not a sacral injury plus 3 other vertebral fractures.
Update from Belgium
Just saw schleck at hotel, looked good :-), spoke to Doctor Lotto, Broken Pelvis Matty :-(( In hospital, can’tmove.. would visit him, but have to leave tomorrow, back home…
Just have to wait and see what comes out in the next day or so….

Thanks CycleGirl!
Glad Frank is looking well…it looked horrible. Shame you can’t see Matty to pass on our good wishes. Hope he recovers soon. Again, many of us thought it might have been a lot worse. Always nasty to see these things….
Have a good flight!

So this might sound crazy...
So watching the end of this race and noticing that none of the Big Stars was able to get any distance on the others, especially at the bottom of the Cauberg where the pack was just a bit behind the leading three, my mind went to the Poggio of all places. Why? Because in MSR there were no real attacks at the end- no one could create a gap. I guess the rationale goes that the peloton was moving so fast that no one had the strength to distance themselves for even a few seconds. Amstel reminded me of that.
Yeah Amstel had three guys who broke away on the penultimate climb but I felt while watching it that the Heads of State were more looking at each other and didn’t want to expend any more energy that they absolutely had too; they were already close to their limit. They hesitated and it was too late. At MSR the only ones trying to break on the Poggio were Pozzato and Rebellin and they were marked quickly as their reputation was that much greater than Ivanov, Kroon, and Gesink.
Okay, my theory doesn’t quite hold up completely. But to me there are still enough similarities between the two races and I’m wondering if we are seeing a slight shift in how non-Cobbled Classics are raced: a fast peloton with little left for late developing breaks to happen. I’ll be looking for reoccurences at La Fleche and LBL.
You could be right
It does seem like breakaways have stayed away on a more frequent basis the last couple of years. It has been speculated that this is because of a cleaner peloton and having to dose your efforts more these days so you don’t blow before the finale. Maybe we are seeing a shift to teams setting a higher pace to keep everyone from taking a flyer and only the truly strong able to go off the front. If that’s the case, than Ivanov, Gesink, and Kroon were on the best form of their lives and a super day.
If I just had one more gear, I...
I've come to the conclusion
that the only way you can tell the difference between a clean rider and a doped one is by chemistry. Or when riders you never thought of as clean start questioning other riders. It all looks pretty much the same on the road.
Nah, the problem wasn't with the Heads of State
the final pack was big enough to include a number of guys who know that their job is to fall on their swords with 500m to go, but they all bottled it. It just looked like too many teams hadn’t made it clear enough to their plan B and plan C guys that they were no longer protected riders at that point.
Good points
Also, we should add right when Van Summeren was done sacrificing himself and needing a helper, Saxo did a very good job blocking the chase.
Nice observation by Belgian tv
In a modern interview-by-statement to Van Summeren: “So you killed yourself for the team two weeks in a row for a fourth place?”
Not completely fair
The prospects yesterday were way better than in P-R. The gap with the breakaway group was very small.
Did anyone notice
Rebellin and Rodriquez coming in more than 3 minutes after Ivanov? Rodri might have worked his ass of voor Valv-piti but it seem like a very disappointing performance by Rebellin to me. Or was he just saving his breath for wednesday/sunday?
Rebellin
Don’t remember exactly which berg it was, possibly Fromberg, but he was in the end of the peloton, almost a bit behind.
Oh my, I've just fallen in love with Roger De Vlaeminck's sideburns.

Keutenberg I believe
cameras zoomed in on him there at least making a point of him being out of it. As for CdE , unzue made a statement that J-rod (and El Untouchable) indicated early in the race that they were having an off day so i wouldn’t be surprised if he let off pretty early saving himself for Fleche.
Moreover, it is my opinion that Alejandro Valverde is an asshole who should not be allowed to compete in bikeraces right now.
