Full Giro Team Lineup

Piggybacking off of Jens' earlier post about Fuji-Servetto, I figured the lineup itself was worthy of a post. Ladeez and gentlemen, your 2009 Giro d'Italia combatants:

  1. Acqua e Sapone - Caffe' Mokambo (Italia)
  2. AG2R - La Mondiale (Francia)
  3. Astana (Kazakistan)
  4. Barloworld (Sudafrica)
  5. BBox Bouygues Telecom (Francia)
  6. Caisse d'Epargne (Spagna)
  7. Cervelo Test Team (Svizzera)
  8. Garmin - Slipstream (Usa)
  9. Fuji - Servetto (Svizzera)
  10. ISD (Italia)
  11. Lampre - Ngc (Italia)
  12. Lpr - Farnese (Irlanda)
  13. Quick Step (Belgio)
  14. Rabobank (Olanda)
  15. Silence - Lotto (Belgio)
  16. Diquigiovanni - Androni (Venezuela)
  17. Team Columbia - High Road (Usa)
  18. Team Katusha (Russia)
  19. Team Milram (Germania)
  20. Team Saxo Bank (Danimarca)
  21. Xacobeo Galicia (Spagna)

From the comments... we think we've discovered who the mysterious 22nd team will be. Um, Liquigas? Here's the Gazzetta dello Sport link, let's see if they ever discover the omission.

If you wonder what that high pitched noice you are hearing is......

It is the sound of anguished hotituders crying in desperation across the globe.

Moreover, it is my opinion that Alejandro Valverde is an asshole who should not be allowed to compete in bikeraces right now.

Bennati might be out

Saw something in Gazzetta where Bennati is saying he might not be recovered enough for the Giro. Seems he is at least out for Romandie next week

by ncmussell on Apr 23, 2009 12:10 PM EDT up reply actions

My theory: it's a plot.

All the other top sprinters sit out the Giro, hoping Cavendish will look around, see no competition for the maglia ciclamino, and stay through until the end—exhausting himself along the way. Then they all show up at the Tour rested and ready to kick his ass for the green.

I concur. I have already wailed endlessly about this in Jens' post on Fuji.

OTOH

The first article comes from AGR, the news agency that RCS owns, so it’s possible that they don’t change it, just sends out a new.

What I dont get

Why is he referencing starting in Romandie but not being ready for the Giro? Probably lost in translation but I wouldn’t think he would be starting in either if he has ruled out the Giro.

by ncmussell on Apr 23, 2009 1:47 PM EDT up reply actions

He needs Romandie for preparation.

Not being able to start Romandie makes the Giro even less likely, as he won’t be on form.

Well, we know the missing team isn't Ceramica Flaminia.

Simeoni and Zomegnan are already sniping at each other in Gazzetta. Simeoni says his exclusion is outrageous; Zomegnan says he doesn’t have to explain the decision to anybody.

Won anything lately? nope (two minor wins in ’09)

Simeoni scored a single freaking point yet? nope.

I don’t appreciate Lance’s dealings with Simeoni, but if he thinks that jersey gets him a ride in the centenary Giro, he’s frikin nuts.

VDS?

The biggest factor pushing newcomers away from this site since the last Dutch TdF winner stood on the podium in Paris.

by Lopex on Apr 23, 2009 3:31 PM EDT up reply actions

don't scare the newcomers

yeah, it’s intimidating sometimes when everyone is talking about their VDS team, but I manage to stick around here even though I have not yet felt remotely competent to pick out a team while trying to take into account an entire cycling season, I find it difficult enough trying to make a prediction about a one-day stage race let alone a GT (so haven’t attempted the entire season thingie yet). So, as long as newcomers realize what VDS is and that they aren’t the only ones around here not involved, they shouldn’t feel pushed away :-D

I honestly can say I have almost no idea how to use Excel. I just write shit on little pieces of paper. Which I then lose.

Plus I am tranqiuilo with my 100th place in the standings. The UCI vampires don’t come after me then. ;)

So, there it is—the less adept you are at spreadsheets, the higher you rank. gav, if you deigned to join us, you would obviously be kicking butt.

Someone mentioned the Olympics

I think it was in the post with the pics from the TT course. As I recall, in the Olympics he crushed the other riders on the descent, both in the road race and in the TT. He was a couple of seconds behind Gustav Larsson on the top, and then Cancellara was 40 seconds or so faster at the finish. But compared to the Giro TT, the descent in Beijing were faily non-technical and I believe the descents in the Giro TT are more difficult.

How is Cancellara’s descending skills, by the way?

Oh my, I've just fallen in love with Roger De Vlaeminck's sideburns.

by TheFigurehead on Apr 24, 2009 3:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Cance's descending is rather excellent

Gained a big chunk of time on the downhill part of the Olympic TT.

by tedvdw on Apr 24, 2009 3:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Cance on a crono bike?

Some of the best bike-handling on the planet. Amazing bike driver.

by Jen See on Apr 24, 2009 3:32 PM EDT up reply actions

It'll be interesting to see his bike choice

for the Liguria tt. Most riders seem to be talking about using climbing bikes, in part because of the tricky descents, but I wonder if Tony will go for a tt rig.

Van Goolen and Nikki Sorensen are both kids with some climbing ability, so this might be some on-bike education. Jens won’t survive the big climbs like the Block Haus.

by ncmussell on Apr 24, 2009 1:43 PM EDT up reply actions

er...

I think you have Nikki S confused with Chris Anker S. Chris A. S. is the climber.

Sprints with Haedo and Goss. Stage hunting with Cance and Jens!

Isn’t Anders Lund a bit of a climber? Or is he a crono guy – he’s one of their younger riders. I even profiled him last year, but I can’t remember what his dealio is.

by Jen See on Apr 24, 2009 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Lund

Don’t know much about him but his best results when he was doing U-23 were in ardennes type events.

by ncmussell on Apr 24, 2009 1:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Van Goolen

He was 2nd in mountains classification in Vuelta in 07.

by ncmussell on Apr 24, 2009 1:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Nikki is more than a decent climber

but he’s mainly on domestique duty (as he will in the Giro. He looked impressive in Flech and I’m betting we’ll be seeing working for the Schleckies late in L-B-L.

Originally it was said that Van Goolen would be going for the Gc in the Giro but he has been pretty invisible in the races so far so I wonder if that is still the plan? He also just announced the most poorly timed move in history. The day after it was reported that testing would be resticted in Spain he came out and said he is moving there to get better training and help with his allergies.

Moreover, it is my opinion that Alejandro Valverde is an asshole who should not be allowed to compete in bikeraces right now.

Proofreading is for morons

If I would have to proofread all the nonsense I spill unto this site, my post total would be half of what it is now. In the beginning I cared about writing proper English but later I figured my English should be good enough to be understood by everybody so I went for speed and wittiness. Sometimes when I proofread accidentally, some of my sentences hurt my eyes but in most cases it is late at night already and I figure it won’t be my eyes I will be ruining with it… (like right now, good night all)

by Lopex on Apr 24, 2009 4:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Right

But I wouldn’t call Nikki S world-beating in the mountains. Chris A. S. might become so, given time.

Thanks for the info on Van Goolen, can never really remember what he is good at.

Lund is more of a crono guy – it’s all coming back to me now.
