Thor Hushovd: Does he stand a chance?

The title says it all, except that it's a rider profile.  Chris' poll of potential winners was so generous to exclude Mr. Hushovd based on his previous results in RVV and P-R.  But on the same poll other riders, with lesser classics' results were included.  Chris wasn't too far off since Unibet gives him 30:1 odds, similiar to Kroon, Klier and Langeveld.  In this post I'm going to try to evaluate his actual chance of winning the next Monument.

Star-divide

Why he might win RVV.

Previous results of note.

RVV: 14th in '06

G-W: 5th in '05, 1st in '06, 11th in '07, 15th in '08

P-R: 17th in '04, 9th in '06

I won't forget 1st in '09 Gent-Gent. (I know he only won because of a crash but it shows he wasn't aiming for top form yet.)

There are some very good results in the cobbled classics which show he could be a contender.

Strong Team Support

He has a very stong supporting cast including: Haussler (who's form is diminishing IMHO), Hammond, Klier, and Rollin.  Two are podium finishers in a cobble classic and Rollin is a big strong guy.  Nothing needs to be said about Haussler's breakout season.

If Hushovd is team leader, there are a lot of strong experienced guys to get him to the front on or before the hellingen.  Either way, this is much better support than available at Credit Agricole where he was when he collected his previous results.

Confidence

I read an interview with Hushovd in Velonews a couple of times last night just to make sure I was in the know.  The majority of what he says is that you need experience to win MSR, RVV, or P-R because the races are so demanding mentally.  You also need stamina and endurance because the length of said races.  He believes that at his age, he has developed both these to the point where he may win a Monument.

Why he might not win RVV.

Previous results of note.

RVV: 14th in '06

G-W: 1st in '06, 5th in '05, 11th in '07, 15th in '08

P-R: 17th in '04, 9th in '06

1st in '09 Gent-Gent (I couldn't find a single rider in recent years who's won RVV in the same year that  they won Gent-Gent .  So this is a point against him.)

Good results in P-R and RVV but nothing stellar.  No top five's or podiums but for most mortals, finishing both is pretty good.  G-W is a different animal.  One cobbled climb done twice (versus 17, not all cobbled, in the Rhonde) and no where close to 50 km of pave like P-R has.

Strength of other teams.

Does much need to be said about Quickstep's cobble strength?  We all know Rabobank has what it takes, if it works right.  Columbia is looking good too, youth and experience.  Silence-Lotto has a couple contenders.  Katushans are okay.  And it doesn't necessarily take a whole team to get 1st in a single race, it helps but not always the deciding factor.

Confidence isn't everything.

Confidence is good but you need to know how to follow the winning move and be in the position to do just that.  They say you can teach race tactics but some riders are just better at reading the race, I've heard this of Pozzato.  Hushovd will have to read the race like a librarian to be in the right move.

Summary

Unibet is up against him but I'm not.  I hope he gets his Monument this weekend.  Maybe he's like Tinkerbell, we all just need to believe in him and he'll pull it off.  Hopefully, he has the confidence to get to the front, the experience to follow the right move once he's there, and the power to make it all work after 259.7 kms.

Hm

back to cycling… It’s not merely Thor’s most recent RVVs but his whole list. He’s been there how many times? And yet he never makes the finale. Surely Credit Ag didn’t have another captain. Cervelo are better, but I dunno, I just think his results show that he can’t hammer (!) up the Muur like Boonen or Hoste.

Based on his size alone, I would see no reason why he couldn’t win Paris-Roubaix. I would include him in THAT poll, especially if you and I are right about Haussler being cooked.

I;m thinking that his new team might be the impetus to step it up a notch this year tho.

still haven’t decided my podium – but really do I want that snuggie?

hell yes!

Pfffft, That Chris, always dissing the norwegians

(shakes head in disappointed maner)

I will bet good money that Thor ends higher in the results-list than HH but not on the podium. I simply think he doesn’t have the racing instincts to know when to save himself, when to attack and so on in these races. It’s the same problem as Hincapie.

The answer is

Not a chance in hell. He’s not Belgian and he’s not on a Belgian team.

Allez.

That is a

budding combover.

So, in answer to the question….no.

If I were his DS . . .

. . . . I would have Thor support HH in the Ronde with Thor being the captain and in G-W and P-R.

Those races are realistic for him this year and if he doesn’t go all out in the Ronde, then he may be able to destroy G-W and diesel the P-R quite nicely.

I dunno. Thor looks different to me this year. Really. Look at him closely this weekend.

He’s looking older. A lot leaner. With a real crisp snap to his pedaling. I’m hoping to see him at the front this weekend. I think he’s trying to fly in under the radar…

Agree

Definitely his body looks different. I give him a shot at winning.

For the man and the team

I’d love to see him win. Even at the cost of VDS points.

Class act.

I hope Hushovd gets a top 5 atleast if not podium

because he deserves to go into this race as team leader and get a shocking result
When he got his 14th,in 2005 ,he was at the Valkenberg with the leaders when Hoste and Boonen flew away.
His team is filled with so much talent Pozzato is thinking of buying some off for himself
He was right at the finale at E3 and snagged 4th.
And where is an example of Haussler climbing better than Hushovd on the cobbles?
…just saying.
Hushovd can climb rather well for a man his size so do not be surprised.

I like his chances for a podium based on his form

and new team. His early fitness is great as well. That being said I agree with Chris, and think next week is really suited for him. Hopefully he won’t be on carbon wheels like the team is saying will be used. 36 spoke box rim aluminum tubies are all he should use the next couple weeks.

doesn't that happen every year?

Some rider has a wheel problem using some new whoop-di-do guaranteed to be awesome new fangled dealy. While someone wins on 70’s technology Ambrosio’s?

by jsallee00 on Apr 5, 2009 12:24 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, last year I really enjoyed

watching Bäckstedt going backwards in the Arenberg on those, ripped to shreads, carbon wheels. Fun times.

Speaking of Unibet.

If an American could, how do you bet on riders?

Seems like you can try to bet on guessing where individual riders will place, as well as match-ups.

Right?

A frozen 'cross ride from this last weekend. As you may be aware we have had siberian conditions here in the UK with a low of -14 degrees centigrade here on saturday morning. It was a beautiful sunny morning so i layered up and set off for a snowy 'cross ride along a roman road. I checked the thermometer when i got back to find it had been -10 throughout the ride! I had a lot of fun though and the views were spectacular.
