Wow thats sad....
Wonder if Hayden Roulston can pass along the name of the Japanese person that cured his heart ailment. Little bit of a dig at the Dutch in there too….I think from what I’m getting from the translation.
I don't know what other Dutchmen had heart problems but the translation says...
23 the Australian William Walker, engaged fromuntil Fuji Mannequin, was forced to stop the career because of heart problems that have been found to the top of the season. Talent very promising, Walker had worked tirelessly for some seasons in youth training the Rabobank: unfortunately not the first time, in the history of the sport of recent years, that the Netherlands shows to be little concern to this type of heart problems for athletes…
Oh right, anni (plural)
But still don’t know any. Doesn’t have to be Dutch, because Roulston isn’t either; just playing for a Dutch team. Surely they’re not referring to the EPO deaths from late 80’s early 90’s?! It could be a footballer, I don’t follow that.
I think, yes
I think they’re making a snarky reference to the early 90’s, yes. Which seems quite bizarre in this case, frankly.
I'm still surprised
that no local Australian media have picked up on this to actually interview Walker (eg. since the first mention a few weeks’ ago from the team) – unless of course they’ve tried and he’s not wanting to talk to anyone.
the team website says "momentarily stopping sporting exercise" not retiring ...
from here, dated April 30, about Piemontesi joining the team:
while two riders had to go out of the team’s list: Daniele Nardello, putting an end into his successful career after the recent Tour of Flanders, and William Walker, momentarily stopping sporting exercise to fully recover from his cardiac diseases.
makes me wonder whether the tuttobici article was written by someone who misunderstood the team’s press release, or whether they have some additional background info …
ah, just read the two toe beachy article
It actually says, “interrupt his career” – the headline here is a tad misleading. It doesn’t say end.
But in my defence
the Italian headline says pretty much the same thing, “Heart problems, William Walker forced to retire.” I didn’t bother translating more because as you said above a lot of it seemed to be a nasty reference to something that happened nearly twenty years ago.
Walker, Walker, Walker...
He’s the guy who won the Australian road race championship a few years ago but didn’t get to wear the jersey because he was too young? That sucks. This too.
Oh my, I've just fallen in love with Roger De Vlaeminck's sideburns.
